Villa closer to Robbo swoop

wd2463843england-goalkeepe.jpgVilla could be closer to reaching a deal to bring in £5m-rated Tottenham keeper Paul Robinson.

The England international is keen to move to Villa and believes boss Martin O’Neill can resurrect his career.

Talks are planned for this week when it is hoped O’Neill can reach agreement with the former Leeds No 1.

A source close to the player said recently: “Paul would welcome the opportunity to join a club like Aston Villa. He believes the manager can help to bring the best out of him.

“Paul realises his chances of playing regularly at Tottenham look unlikely and feels such a move would help to resurrect his career.”

Robinson will cost Villa in the region of £5m, half the amount O’Neill was quoted for Robinson’s recent England understudy Scott Carson by Liverpool.

It is believed Villa would only have done business on Carson at £3m-£4m.

As the Robinson deal moves closer, released Villa keeper Thomas Sorensen his declared his desire to prove himself in England again.

Sources close to Sorensen say he could end up at Stoke or Hull, where he believes he can be their No 1.

He said: “Of course the situation is unsatisfactory, and I think that it’s an annoying position I’ve ended up in.

“I now hope I can quickly find a new club that matches my ambitions. A club in the Danish league does not come into my thoughts.

“On the other hand, a club in England would be the right move – but it hasn’t yet fallen into place.”

But Benfica right-back Nelson, who was strongly linked with Villa, is staying in Portugal.

He said: “It’s true I went far enough to consider leaving, but now I intend to negotiate my contract with the club.

I suppose it is inevitable that Villa will be linked to several players during the closed season, but I have to ask “Why are we taking such an interest in out of favour players like Robinson & Sidwell for instance” surely someone should ask why it is that they are surplus to requirements at their respective clubs in the first place and then ask themselves how we expect to beat these teams with their own cast offs. I honestly expected Villa to be a lot more ambitious with their new signings this time round, seems like I am wrong thus far. I still have faith in MON but I have to say it was a total surprise to see him working for the Beeb during the Euro finals, of course he would know what is going on but I would much rather him have his own finger on the pulse, we over achieved last season but unless there is a lot more positivity shown in the transfer market, I fear we will most definitely struggle this coming season.

I have just heard that MON is considering bringing Lee Naylor from Celtic, yet another out of favour player, will someone please explain to me the logic in all of this? the way I see it, bargain basement buys will only make up the numbers and lower the quality.
