Wolves have admitted defeat in their chase for Peterborough striker Aaron McLean.
Molineux boss Mick McCarthy has had two bids turned down for the League Two 33-goal top scorer, the highest of which was £1.5m. Peterborough demanded £5m.
Posh boss Darren Ferguson said: “The deal is dead as far as I’m concerned.
“Wolves made two bids and they would have gone higher, but I spoke with Mick McCarthy and told him they couldn’t afford Aaron.
“He’s accepted that fact and will now look elsewhere. That’s excellent news for us.
“We don’t want to lose any of our better players and Aaron certainly falls into that category.”
Mclean has three years on his contract but turned down the offer of a new deal, fuelling talk he wanted to come to Wolves.
Former Wolves midfielder Ferguson added: “I’ve spoken to Aaron and he’s fine about the situation.
“He’s a good lad and a good professional. I don’t expect anything other than to see him give his all for the club in training and in matches, like he always has.”
