‘Moor’ care needed after sign spelling blunder

It should have been a simple enough task replacing worn-out street signs. But council chiefs were today red-faced after workers misspelt the name of a busy road in Willenhall.

Residents of Ashmore Lake Road have been doing a double take after seeing two different spellings for the same road. While the correct name is Ashmore Lake Road, one sign further up along the street reads Ashmoor Lake Road. It has also emerged that a sign at nearby Ravenscroft Road has been spelt as Ravens Croft Road.

Now Walsall Council has been criticised for failing to concentrate on attention to detail.

Stacy Sayers, aged 20, from Lane Head, said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw the sign. I have lived in the area all my life and I have always known the road name being spelt as Ashmore Lake Road.

“When I saw it spelt as Ashmoor Lake Road I was left gobsmacked. I know mistakes happen but I think attention to detail is very important when it comes to signs and I think it just looks ridiculous.”

Willenhall North Liberal Democrat councillor Ian Shires said the mistakes were an “embarrassing shambles” for the council.

“It is crass and shouldn’t have happened,” he added. “Many people might say it is petty criticising the council but I think it is very important that signs in the borough are spelt right.

“I really don’t think the council is taking enough attention to detail. This is an embarrassing shambles for the authority.”

Council spokesman Dan Slee said: “We are investigating the matter.”

IF THE PERSON WHO DID THE SIGNS CANNOT SPELL PROPERLY THEN GET RID OF AND EMPLOY SOMEONE WHO CAN.
