Walsall striker Troy Deeney admits the Banks’s Stadium is a launchpad for stars of the future.
Deeney saw former team-mates Scott Dann and Danny Fox swapped the Saddlers for Coventry in January and the pair have gone on to be capped at England under-21 level.
The young forward admits to a little envy at their successes, but insists it has made him and his team-mates even more determined to bring success to Walsall, ideally with promotion.
He said: “Everyone has seen what Scotty and Foxy have done and if you can’t do it with Walsall you have to do it somewhere else.
“You have to do the job here before you do it anywhere else, so everyone is going to strive that little bit harder. Hopefully we can push into the play-offs and at least we can say we have given it our best chance.”
Deeney believes he owes a debt of gratitude to the club for handing him his break, but the ambitious forward, who is 20 tomorrow, admits the day may come where he has to move on if a big opportunity presents itself.
“Football is a business. While you’re at this place you give 110 per cent,” he added. “Walsall have given me my chance so they will always be in my heart. But if the day comes you have to move then you have to do what’s best for yourself.”

Deeney is nowhere near the same class as Dann and Fox. The only clubs that will be interested in him in a year’s time will be from Lg2 or the Conference…when we’ve given hima free transfer!! He’s not the answer to Walsall’s striking problems. Time to get the cheque book out Walsall - if you can find it!!
Mr Deeney put in a lot of effort last year but to very little effect. His goal scoring record was woeful. He is therefore being a little immature talking about moving on when he has not yet achieved a standard that is good enough to secure a regular first team place here at Walsall. Such talk will not endear him to the fans and as he strives to improve he needs them behind him. Having said that we all wish him the success he is striving to achieve.
troy works hard but he dont score enough goals.
we need a player who scores 15-30 goals a season.
mr deeney needs to start finding the net if he dreams of moving on to a bigger club. woeful scoring record in the first team, never even looks like finding the net. if he’s our answer up front next season i fear the worst. lets hope he proves me wrong. after 43 years of going to see the lads i dont think i shall be there next season, canot go and see a club with very little ambition any more
Troy gives 100% effort every game , no doubt about that but as others have said his goal scoring record is poor. For me, his 1st touch is woeful but I am sure someone said that about Steve Bull once !! we shall see.
Willenhall Saddler, you have been supporting the Saddlers as long as I have. I will still go and see the lads - Bonser ain’t gonna kill my love for the club - although he’s having a good go at the moment. I can’t ever remember being so depressed before in a pre-season: where are the promised new signings? Will it be a rolling “2 new players to sign before the end of the week” from now till next May? Pathetic!
GET RID OF THE BIG SO AND SO. LET HIM TRY SOMEWHERE ELSE HE’S NOT GOOG ENOUGH FOR WALSALL SIMPLE!
Apparently Coventry are looking at him (according to E&S). Are we really just a feeder club????
Let’s wrap the team up if that’s the case.
Bonser isn’t strong enough to refuse a transfer and a spot of quick money.
get off his back that all he needs to build his confidence up you will all be singing his name cum xmass and he might show us his brum tattoo
