A cheery song penned by a Wolverhampton-based band about showbiz favourite Terry Wogan has been broadcast live to the nation – by the legend himself.

Rang-a-Tang, which has been going strong for 18 years under various band members, recorded a song in tribute to to the popular Radio 2 host entitled Very Terry Wogan.

A fan of the star who heard the band play live was so impressed by the track he sent a copy of it to the man himself. The veteran broadcaster then played an extract of it on his Radio 2 show Wake up to Wogan.

Today the band’s manager told how they had been approached by bosses of Children In Need about taking part in a song for a special charity CD due out next October.

The band is made up of 45-year old Mike Crane, from Strathmore Crescent in Wombourne, 37-year-old Darren Noden, from Mill Croft, Bilston, Ritchie Hynes, of Blakeley Avenue, Tettenhall, who is aged 30, and 17-year-old Will Halls, of High Green, Brewood.

They tour the country and perform on cruise ships, playing cover hits from songs from the 60s through to the present day.

The group’s manager Julie Crane said: “A fan of ours sent it to Terry Wogan and he decided to play it live on air. We have absolutely no idea who sent it to him, but it’s a very funny song and he must have liked it.

“It all happened only last week and it is a mystery who got the recording and sent it off to him. We’d like to know to be honest.”

It was Richard Crane from Birmingham, Richie DD from South Wales and Karen from Yorkshire who in combination drew the Togmeisters attention, the man himself read out the names just before he played the song for the first time last thursday…
