New library link service to be opened

The first of the new library link services being introduced across the borough as part of a controversial shake-up will open in Dudley Wood next month.

Five libraries will shut under Dudley Council’s £2.6 million modernisation programme, with a number of link sites offering limited services set to replace them.

The new link at Dudley Wood Neighbourhood Learning Centre will take over from the existing facility in Bush Road, which will close on July 26. The link, which will have the borough’s first self-issue kiosk, will open two days later.

Councillor Michael Evans, the cabinet responsible for libraries, said the opening marked the start of a new chapter for library services in Dudley.

“The opening of the first library link marks the start of a new phase for libraries in the borough,” he said. “The link will offer visitors a flexible service and both the library service and neighbourhood learning centre will work closely to ensure they meet the needs of the local community.

Councillor Evans also announced the authority has reached a decision about where to base the Quarry Bank link service. It will be sited in the Quarry Bank Community Centre in High Street, replacing the existing library at the top of the road.

And he pledged the council would work closely with the local community association to develop the services available there.

Four potential sites had been identified for the link but the community centre was judged to be the most suitable after consultation with residents.

Councillor Evans said: “Residents can be sure that Quarry Bank Library Link will be easily accessible as it’s only a few minutes walk from the existing library.”

The authority is planning to close Quarry Bank Library once the new link is open.
