Contaminated petrol being sold on a Wolverhampton forecourt left motorists stranded and has landed a supermarket giant with a bill for thousands of pounds in repair bills.
The petrol was sold at Sainsbury’s filling station in Wednesfield.
Customers were unable to drive their cars away after filling up with the affected fuel. Now the company has agreed to shell out compensation after receiving a string of complaints from angry motorists.
A spokeswoman for the store said an investigation was under way. Tests revealed the fuel had been contaminated with water.
Motorist Julie Hill, of Temple Road, Willenhall, was caught out when she went to fill up her Ford Fiesta at the Bentley Bridge store on Wednesday. After putting £42 worth of unleaded petrol in the tank, she went to drive off but the car would not start.
She said: “I thought this was strange as it’s only 18 months old. I checked the receipt to make sure I hadn’t filled up with the wrong fuel but everything was correct. I had to push it off the forecourt and phone a friend from work to tow me back.”
On Monday the supermarket had to shut off the tank that supplied unleaded petrol to the pumps after complaints.
