Residents living close to a planned mosque in Walsall are up in arms over the proposals saying it will create traffic chaos on an already busy road.
People living by the site of the application at the former Hertz Rent A Car and Autocrash Repair Centre, in St John’s Road, Pleck, say they fear roads around the building could become over-run with cars if the proposals are given the go-ahead. The plans, which have been submitted to Walsall Council, have caused uproar among some neighbours.
They have handed a petition in against the scheme and today took to the street to make their voices heard.
Protesters said the area around Pleck already suffers traffic problems due to a new road layout and the problems will be made worse with the building of a new mosque.
Eileen Edwards, aged 65, from Scarborough Road, said the residents were deeply concerned about the application saying it would create traffic hell.
She said: “The application will further increase the traffic problems in Pleck which are already chaotic.
“We have got no qualms with a mosque in theory but just not in the location where it is planned for.
“We have already handed in a petition to the council and we will also be sending individual letters of objection.
“We will also be protesting against the plans at the development control meeting.”
Pleck councillor Dennis Anson added: “The residents have major concerns about this site and rightly so.
“There will be people coming from all over the area to the mosque creating further traffic chaos.
“The main reason the car firm moved from the site to a new location was because of the traffic problems it faced there.
“It is just not the right location.”
Meetings have already taken place with the applicants behind the scheme to share concerns.
The applicant, a Dr Sadique, was not immediately available for comment today.
But agents acting on his behalf said they were working with the community to ensure the plans were meeting with their approval.
