Fans face £40 top game bill

albionbadge1.jpg

Albion will hit casual supporters with an across-the-board £40 match-day charge for the top games at The Hawthorns next season.

The Baggies, already celebrating record season ticket sales as they prepare for the Premier League assault, could have less than 2,000 tickets to shift for each game by the time the season gets underway.

But the “pick-and-cho-ose” supporters will have to pay £40 no matter where they sit in the ground if they want to watch the plum fixtures against Manchester United, Chelsea and Co.

As is standard practice in this era, Albion are splitting the  fixture list in to two categories, with 11 high-demand games in Category A which will demand £40 entrance fees with concessions of £25 for seniors, young adults and students and £20 for juniors (under 16s) and disabled.

Tickets for Category B

games come in at for £25 adults and concessionary rates of £15 and £10.

The club have charged £40 match-day prices before – but only for the best seats in the house while other tickets have gone for a concessionary £25.

But TV scheduling and police requests mean the category of a game could be subject to change should it be moved to a different kick-off time and/or date.

Albion’s pricing policy means big rewards for the season ticket holders who have flocked to The Hawthorns ticket office this summer. The club have already broken their season ticket record with more than 21,000 seats sold and less than 900 season tickets are now available.

And even though the prime discount deadline has passed, they are still giving fans the chance to make an average saving of 30 per cent on match-day prices.

Remaining adult season ticket in the Brummie Road End will cost £399, saving £241 on match-day prices and offering the equivalent of approximately seven free games.

Baggies finance director Mark Jenkins said: “The club is staggered by the uptake in season tickets and pleased the fans have recognised the excellent value an Albion season ticket represents.”

At least JP is showing his appreciation to the loyal season ticket holders. It’s the no show of the ‘casual’ fans that persuaded JP to shelve ground expansion plans less than 12 months ago and now they’ll have to pay for their apathy!
My only worry is that £40 is a litte too steep - in the current economic crisis are the casuals going to buy to see us play the Man Utd’s & Arsenals? Or are these seats going to be occupied by Midlands based fans of these clubs? If so this could spell trouble in home sections of the ground!

How we can charge such ridiculously high prices for top matches is beyond me, with the cost of living as it is today and the vast amounts of money from the prem,it’s just sheer greed, went to 15 home games last season, won’t be going to 1 of those 40 quid games

I’m one of these “casual” fans as I live in South Wales and can’t afford to do the 200 mile - 5 hour - round trip each weekend, and pay parking and food and everything else that goes with it.

But, amazingly, I agree that we should pay more if we pick and choose our games.
Now, I don’t travel up just for the glamour games - I’ve seen some dire games to reward my journey - but if I decide to travel up to see a Man U/Ar$enal/Chelsea/Liverpool game then I’m prepared to pay for it.

I think its the right thing to do. True Baggies fans will have snapped up the excellent value season tickets already and the Glory hunters should rightly pay more. We are not a charity after all we need to compete financially in the top league.Maybe the kids seats should be cheaper to encourage ‘new’ fans to come along, however.I sympathise with fans that are struggling cash wise (I include myself in this bracket) but I sacrifice other social stuff to go see my team play and my £299 is money well spent. There will also be chances at League cup games etc. to see the Stripey Demons at reduced prices.

  6. Ryan said:

Thanks for the positive story again E&S.

The people that are moaning about these prices are the same who moan when JP says we can’t spend loads of money, in order to spead we have to accumulate money through ticket sales.

It’s not worth me having a season ticket as I can’t get to night games, which would have meant missing about a dozen games last season.

Blanket criticism or generalisation of fans who live some distance away as ‘glory hunters’ or ‘casual fans’ is well wide of the mark.

With regards to paying £40 for ‘top’ games, I couldn’t give a stuff if we’re playing Chelsea or Chesterfield, I go to watch the Albion not the opposition. Unfortunately with the cost of living as it is at the moment, especially fuel prices, I can see me attending fewer games than any season since 1987.

Are you saying that “True” Albion fans are those that go to every single game?

I guess you’re not a “True fan” then if you only have a home season ticket?

I’m not a glory hunter thank you very much - I was there at the Anglo Italian Cup semi final against Port Vale (one of the worst games I’ve EVER seen anywhere!) and I think I’ve clocked up more than 60 grounds watching the Baggies - but now circumstances don’t allow me to travel every other week.

Even if they did, I doubt I’d do it as (at the end of the day) there’s more to life than football.

I think it’s quite sad that you’d give up your social life to sit on the same plastic seat to hurl abuse at people that can’t hear you.

Personally, I’d rather play with my little girl, or go on holiday, or even watch my local side play.

But NOTHING would ever convince me (nor my friends, work colleagues, relatives, neighbours) that I’m anything less than 100% Albion.

And one final thing - is someone that walks to the ground more of a fan than someone who travels 100 miles or more to get there?

A fan is a fan is a fan in my book.

My use of the term ‘casuals’ doesn’t refer to people who live many miles away, have to work sometimes on match day, have young families to support, are plain hard up, etc etc. Some people will only take jobs with no Sat work (not that that guarantees much with TV dictating kick off times i know). Some people don’t get to choose.
I refer to the thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of people who call themselves Albion ‘fans’, yet choose to spend their money and their Saturdays on other things. You make choices in life.
These are the ones who normally moan when things like this happen. I know many Albion ‘fans’ who moan they can’t afford to go to the match then spend Saturday afternoon & night in the pub watching the scores come in on Sky. Or they simply can’t be bothered to get to B71 on a regular basis. These are the casuals i was referring to. But you can bet they were all at New Wembley (twice).
There are many real fans who are going to be hugely affected by this £40 price & i feel sorry for them. Like i said it is too high!
Bit there are also thousands of casual fans who have brought this on!

As a non STH I also actually think this makes sense.

The season tickets were offered at a fantasic price and even now are great value if you want one - however I can’t go every week and so I guess I do pick and choose a bit.

I will watch us against Wigan and bolton if i can just like i will watch us against man utd ect… but as a club we need to maximise our earning potential and this seems like the way to do it.

If I was taking children with me I suppose i would think differently about the cost.

it must be diffcult for you only paying £25 quid board to your mother each week , while the rest of us pay mortgages and other costs!

none of us season tickets as it would cost us too much as we cant make every game.

Now greedy peace is going to stop us all going at all.

last season i paid for over 150 tickets next year none at that rip off price.

Taking into account the cost of fuel food etc etc it will cost far too much for you average “glory hunter” like me and my son + mates

Goodbye Albion its been nice knowing you th last 40 years

Season ticket holders should get extra benefits ahead of casual fans (like myself), but £40 a ticket anywhere in the ground? It’s a laugh, but it’s the price you’ll have to pay! I’ve never liked it when clubs categorise games - it should be one price for every game, except some cup games. Remember folks, we’re back in the ‘Greed League’!

  21. Poor little dingles. said:

If we had a bigger ground maybe we could spread the cost, but I dont see us staying up so we will probably resume back to our normal 15-17000 average gate and the lower prices for non STH will return.

19 Crwni, do the maths man. If you go to 80% (missing 4) of the games and a season ticket gives 7 free games, you will still get 3 free games by buying up front. Great Value!

The club has done enough in keeping prices at a decent level in recent seasons. They have also given fans every oportunity to buy season tickets at a very good price. There will only be around 2,000 on general sale so it just a case of supply and demand. I don’t blame the club on this one.
The fans who have to travel or can only make a few games are going to have to suffer on this one.

  25. baggi boy said:

have to make a comment on this one guys,, why not pay more for the higher games ie man u, chelsea as a lot of people say they only come to watch the opposition and sit in home end,, dam cheek me thinks, i have a husband and son and we all have season tickets.. we buy them via the albion credit card and dont have to pay til xmas, therefore i paid last xmas for the season just finished and have been saving bits from then til this xmas to pay them off, another good idea from the albion,, and why not look after season ticket holders after all the games for a tenner last season that we did not get a benefit from. anyway off my soapbox now, cant wait for the season to start…

  26. Baggie Boy said:

I agree with Baggies(9) when Chelsea etc come to watch a game its cheaper to travel by coach and purchase a ticket than just to buy a home ticket.

Why should’nt we put the prices up for the “glamour” games

I missed out on all the £10 offers last season due to being a season ticket holder…where was the fairness in that.
I guarentee 90% of the people moaning about these costs managed to pay for tickets to Wembley, also afforded the travel costs to Wembley and also probably afforded the food n drink to go with the day out at Wembley, so what we saying £100-£150 for a day out, money appeared then!!!!!
I bloomin hate it when people jump on the bandwagon at every opportunity.

On another point i’ve had a Wolves season ticket holder already ask me to get him a ticket for the Man Utd game….my response NOT A CHANCE!!!

  28. Irish Baggie said:

As a ‘casual fan’, I don’t mind paying the £40 - after flight & other transport costs it doesn’t make much of a difference - but, being deemed something of a second-rate supporter simply for not making every game??? Harsh…. Trust me, you don’t have to be at the game to live & die on every Baggie performance.

  29. wbabomber said:

Some of you are confusing me, many of you are saying you go to 80% of games but have decided against a season ticket, why?
If you go to that many games it makes economic sense to buy a season ticket, the games you cannot make either give our sell your seat to a mate.
I can appreciate the fact of paying £40 to go and watch football is expensive, but the fans who pick and choose wil still pick and choose anyway (just probably not as many).
On the other hand £25 to watch Prem footy is excellent value for money, it is called supply and demand, the club has given everybody the opportunity of reduced prices you cant now moan that it doesnt suit you.
I think the pricing structure is bang on, the only thing i would have tweaked is that people with a booking history of 15 or more games in a season get a discount to reward their past loyalty.

  30. no1baggiesfan said:

It is good idea but a little over-priced, for some of us like 4. supermaths we live miles away for me to travel 500 miles and then pay £80 for me and the missus to watch the baggies just is not justifiable, it would work out at something like £200 for food, fuel, tickets and programme, for one match, you have no chance.
I would gladly pay for a season ticket if I was still in Birmingham but Im not, maybe fans who are members like me but live a distance away could get a discount, or how about Albion TV, in this age of technology and sky it cant be that hard to screen the matches via sky to us long distance fans, for a reasonable fee it would generate more money for the club and give us our fix of Baggie action.

I’ve got a season ticket for next season and i live in Folkestone, Kent. I don’t think that i will get to all of the games, due to fuel prices, work etc, but by having the season ticket it guarantees me a seat whenever i can get to the games. When you consider the price of individual tickets, having a season ticket is far better value, even if you only get to 7 or 8 games.

  33. Throstlehead said:

This is a tough one. JP has offered fabulous value on season tickets to fans who are able to support the team at every game. But these match day prices are very steep and there are plenty of die hard fans who have other commitments that prevent them having season tickets. The problem is these tickets are going to be in high demand as so few will be available. Its market forces I’m afraid although it just might prevent ‘casual’ fans buying them to sell to their glory hunting ManU and Arsenal mates who usually watch telly.

  34. Great_Barr Baggie said:

In addition to my other post (32). Another option for those who cannot go to all of the games. Buy a season ticket between 2 or 3 of you. Then you could have all paid £100/150 and been to alot more games each. Just a thought.

This seems to have drifted towards a ‘who is the biggest fan’ contest.

It’s an interesting debate but I’d hesitate to say being a season ticket holder means you’re more of a supporter than those without one.

I’ve friends with season tickets out of convenience, e.g. Dad and brother go, get a lift each week, all paid for, who probably wouldn’t go if they had to fork out and make an effort themselves AND friends who would do anything to go every week but live away from home and genuinely haven’t got the cash for travelling/tickets etc, can’t get credit cards (as mentioned above) through poor credit etc but kick and breathe every ball in front of a radio, pace around the house etc.

If any of you haven’t read Adrian Chiles’ book, that gives good food for thought on what makes a fanatic/fairweather fan. Definitely worth a look.

For the record, I think the club have done the right thing, it’s truly impossible to reward individuals and we’ve got to accept it’s a business at the end of the day, and the club, to be fair, has done its best not to completely rip off those who attend the most.

But it’s easy to forget, a lot of the new season ticket holders only did so to guarantee a Wembley ticket last year!!!

How many of these 21,500 were at Twerton Park in 1991?

However I won’t attend any game for £40 when I happen to be in the u.k.- that’s an outrageous price. JP should remember that 7 out of 10 live premiership games are live each week-end, either on sky, foreign sat channels or the internet. I will watch the baggies at least 20 times live on tps/canal+ france this coming season and the same games will be available at any pub with a decent satellite system in the uk

I feel sympathy with many of the Baggie people on here who find the matchday prices steep, but to my mind these prices are partially aimed at away supporters.Regulations forbid differential pricing for home and away supporters, and if the “big” clubs’ supporters who never miss a match want to come to the Hawthorns, they are going to have to pay for the privilege. Why shouldn’t the club make money out of a large number of away fans? We have to pay when we travel away. Did anybody really think prices would come down with promotion?

  51. Cyril Randle said:

I support JP on most occasions, but this time I don’t. I’m dead against categorised prices for games. Also i did a bit of arithemetic.
21,000 STH leaves 6,500 tickets. Say 3,500 go to away supporters, that leaves 3,000 for so-called ‘casuals’, many of whom are NOT as shown above. So a £40 price for SOME matches will show as £10 x 3,000 for 5 matches as a total of £150,000 over the whole season. THAT’S if we sell them all! What will happen increasingly is what has been said by No.48 the French Mountain Climber. Sensible clubs will eventually offer computerised football viewing at a sensible price, say £5 and will get maybe 100,000 viewers. Now THAT’S what I call making sensible money, better than radio too.

I would have bought a season ticket had I still lived locally, but the round trip now costs around £55 - and that’s on top of tickets, whether it’s a season ticket or a £40 ticket for one match. The £55 petrol is a constant and won’t go away and unfortunately, there are other commitments which eat up the contents of my wallet. There’s already more month than money as it is.

It’s a shame that prices are so high for the remaining 2000 tickets per game, but I can understand why they’ve done it and it doesn’t make me love them any the less.

  55. Freddies Right Foot said:

As a Wolves season ticket holder, I agree with some of the comments on paying ‘X’ amount of money for a season ticket and the club then chucking £10 tickets into the mix, it’s a bit of a kick in the gonads for the loyal followers amongst you, on the flip side, those of you talking about attending some of or even most of the home games but NOT buying a season ticket must be mad ! I dont know what you guys charge for a match day ticket nowadays but as an example, if you charge (max) £25 a ticket and a season ticket is £350 then those of you going to 10 games or there abouts are paying close on the amount required to secure the same seat for every game, the chance at first pick on cup tickets and away tickets and the knowledge that you’re always guranteed a seat for whichever home game you decide to go to…
My mate who now lives in Plymouth is a Wolves S.T.H and still buys his ticket and probably attends 6 to 12 games a season but the rest of the time he sells his ticket to a mate or colleague so he’s quids in with a guarantee of the pick of best games for himself. I know it might seem harsh but £40 is probably average Premiership game money now and at least you have the status of premier league team, I think i’d probably pay it once in a while if i were a casual fan. Good luck next season baggies…

  56. mboy said:

I wish people would read the article. It’s only £25 for 8 category B games - a price DECREASE - if you can’t afford (or are unwilling to pay) £40 - go to those games instead.
As for those complaining about the category A games - would you rather pay £26 and watch us against Doncaster or £40 to watch us against Man U? You can’t have it both ways.

  57. themowbrayway said:

I don’t buy into this nonsense of who is a better fan. Whether you’re a STH or go a few times every season, most of us bleed blue and white. The fact that we’ve sold so many season tickets is great and testament to Mowbray’s football philosophy. It’s just market forces that have pushed up the match day prices and people are going to have to live with that. If we have a decent season, hold our own and continue to play the attractive football we did last season, then no doubt many STH’s will want to renew, and of course, the price is going to go up. Hey folks, it’s the way of the world.

  58. Tall man said:

Not to bothered myself, gave my season ticket of 13 years up last season and haven’t missed it. The game has gone beyond the reach financially of most proper fans and until people stop paying for it then so it will continue to rise. Probably be 10 home games on Sky anyway like last time we where in the prem. £40.00 to watch us get battered six by Man utd. No thanks!!!!!!!

  59. M20Baggie said:

These higher prices are surely aimed at milking the away supporters who are used to paying £600 plus for their own home season tickets. With only 3K tickets available to our home fans, then sufficient demand is likely to be there in order to sell out (especially against Man U, Chelsea & Arsenal). I do however have real sympathy for those unable (or unwilling) to find the £40 for the big matches, but loads of these fans would struggle to access tickets for these games anyway if they were under £30. JP is just using his head & applying basic economics. The loyal fan is being rewarded & that seems most fair. There could’ve be a different scenario (like at B’ham City) where everyone was ripped off!!
I live in Manchester & am a STH for the following reasons:
    - Even if I only make 80% of the games (& incidentally my attendance will be based on Sky re-arranging games rather than only watching the big teams), I’m still Quids in (& my nephew can go & watch the games that I miss).
    - It’s a major flipping hassle buying individual tickets over the phone!
Should be interesting to see what happens to us STHs next year should TM keep us up?!

Never posted before. I have been a Baggie since my dad took me in 1969 he being a fan since his dad took him in 1924. For the last 25 years as a Vicar, 10 of them abroad and as I work most Saturdays and week nights plus lowish income and a young family ,it is just tricky to get to all the games I would wish to, so I am a pick and choose supporter. For years home and abroad I have told stories about the Albion in sermons and retreat weekends and inspired a number to check out the Baggies for themselves. The Hawthorns is and will always be a sacred place or even a thin place as the celts put it as a place to connect to my long gone Dad. I follow as I can and just like the context of my chosen profession, are people who attend Church say about 3 to 10 times a year any less worthy compared to the weekly attenders? It would be sad if so. I will pay the rate when I can and as usual potentially see them more away than at home as usual. I have met Baggies all over the world and that special bond in a way of seeing the world is priceless and a lifelong blessing and a curse.

I live in Germany now so only get to a game about three times a year. However growing up in the Midlands I used to whatch the Albion with my old man religiously during the 80’s & 90’s both home & away (guess that makes me a casual/plastic fan). I find 40 quid very steep, that means if I take my daughter, wife & my mother on the few occasion’s that we are able to visit every year I would have to fork out 145 + (I like my pies lol) quid for three adults and a child for top tier games.
Which would make me one very skint exiled baggie.

I assume that the supporters who for whatever reason can’t attend every match, will attend a cross section of games, in this case it will average out at approx £32-50p not £40 per game. This does seem to be a fair price in the prem. Would I be right in guessing that most of the people complaining about seat prices are the same ones that complain about the lack of spending.
Anyway, was it Shakespeare or Phineas T Barnum or WBA Forever that said, ‘you can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.’ Just reading through the comments on here is proof that there’s no easy answer.

You’re right about ‘Baggies fans who won’t fork out the poultry sum of £40,’ it’s chicken feed isn’t it.

It is too steep i think 40 quid to charge against the big boys. But i can see where JP is coming from because the demand will be there because there will be a lot of people who dont watch but want to watch them against the big boys. The true fans out there would pay 25 quid to see em play wigan. It doesnt matter who u see them against as long as your there. And this debate about whether season ticket holders are more loyal? Well they are more loyal because the fact is they are there week in week out. Whether some people have financial problems and cant afford a season ticket thats a shame. But some people cant afford a season ticket and still bloody buy one !!! So for me season ticket holders are more loyal because they want to watch their team against anybody not the glamour games against the big boys !!!! I seem to remember last season seeing everyone que up to get a ticket against wolves. Some people not been all season or for several years but want to see that game. You should go when ever you can its not about the opposition !!!! Boing Boing. P.s Terry the womaniser etc you make me laugh. Keep em coming haha

Our most expensive premier league season ticket is £499. Lets compare that with some championship prices taken from another board. The N/A ones werew unknown:
    Ipswich - 703
    QPR - 699
    Sheff Wed - 605
    Crystal Palace - 600
    Wolves - 540
    Norwich - 537
    Cardiff - 519
    Nott Forest - 517
    Derby - 510
    Sothampton - 500
    Reading - 495
    Charlton - 475
    Coventry - 470
    Watford - 469
    Burnley - 462
    Bristol City - 455
    Doncaster - 420
    Sheff utd - 409
    Plymouth - 399
    Preston - N/A
    Barnsley -N/a
    Blackpool - N/A
    Birmingham - N/A
    Swansea - N/A

So we don’t appear that bad do we? Got to give credit to the albion, they offered some fantastic deals on season tickets, and unfortunately you can’t please all the people all the time. I would have done it slightly different to them. I would have had the initial prices on offer to S/T holders from last season, with a middle price to those new S/T applicats buying before season finished, then the top price for the post deadline fans.

£40 may seem alot, but i’ll bet thats what those who go away everyweek will be paying for most games.

I rarely come onto these pages but I must comment on this. Blues did this and it is a dangerous game to play. Some loyal fans will not pay this. Wolves, Albion and Blues are much more expensive than the Vile. It is a disgrace and downright greedy!

C’mon guys it’s all about accountants, now not supporters following their team. There will come a day when Corporate football is the name of the game. big business will buy all seats in case existing or prospective customers want to go and be shmoozed by the Corporations who are either pursuing business or keeping it. A hyperthetical scenario could be where all tickets are previously sold for a game but there is no crowd.Result? Football club happy, corporate sponsors happy, accountants happy. Fans? Accrington Stanley more like.
Good luck baggies it’s a bumpy ride on and off the pitch.
