Kightly signs new four year deal

kightly51.jpegMichael Kightly has signed a new four-year contract with Wolves to end speculation on his future. The 22-year-old winger had three years on his existing deal signed almost exactly 12 months ago, but was one of the poorer paid players and had been seeking improved terms to bring him parity with his team-mates.

The former Grays wide man put pen to paper on his new contract last night at Molineux, which ties him to the club to 2012. He was happy to finally put an end to the talk on his future.

He said: “I’m delighted to sign the new contract. I never wanted to leave the club anyway and I’m pleased to get my future sorted out.

“I’ve said from day one I’m happy here. The discussions went well and now I can look forward to another four good years.

“The ambition is to kick on and get into the Premier League and I want to be part of it and play at the highest level.”

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey added: “Michael has typified the sort of player we want – young, talented and a desire to work hard for the cause.”

Kightly has proved to be one of the all-time bargains since boss Mick McCarthy snapped him up for just £25,000 from Grays in January 2007.

His electric form helped Wolves into the play-offs during McCarthy’s first season, when he was voted the Championship’s Young Player of the Year.

Last season he won three England under-21 caps before missing five months of the season with an ankle injury which eventually required surgery, returning for the final four games.

News of Kightly’s deal may well spell disappointment to Blackburn, Middlesbrough and West Ham, who have been linked with the England under-21 international.

Rovers, who unveiled former Wolves captain Paul Ince as their boss today, face a battle to keep David Bentley and saw Kightly as a possible replacement.

Ironically, Ince may turn to transfer-listed Wolves midfielder Seyi Olofinjana, who had a request to leave accepted yesterday and is available for £3m.

Wolves have also insisted they have no interest in Leicester midfielder Stephen Clemence, in answer to reports they have made a £700,000 bid.

Let’s hope there is no ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in this contract. I see Sonko is bailing out on Reading for exactly the same reason as Seyi. Camara did it on us too. Seems the African players are happy to come over and join to get in the country early on, but soon change their stripes and only want Premiership football later. Trust Seyi goes to Hull, then he can be back in the same boat in 12 months.

Hmmm i think he will be on his way if we fail to get promoted just like George and in previous seasons Lescott. I for one hope our young players get left alone now and we build for the comming season…..come on Jez and Mick where are the centre halves we require? Onwards and upwards!

so that’s a 4 year contract with no doubt the same get out clause that george got last year…

good news or is it contracts dont mean nuffin these days and has he done the same as seyi he just signed a 4 year contract and had a release clause in it,hope he hasnt done the same, summert fishy about it

  14. shatpankwolves said:

fairplay kites, heard he was unhappy about the medical cover/being paid while injured, because his wages were based on incentives, goals, assists, wins etc and because he was out injured he wasnt obviously gettting any of those bonus incentives!!!
its obvious he has one of those ” if we dont get promoted i want to leave” clauses in his contract but who cares if we dont make it AGAIN then he as my blessing.
SEB is going nowhere, and get gravesen in now, pay him what he wants/needs, berra and offload you know who and a few others, a fit matt murray challenging hennessey or vice versa and i think we may be alright

Great news but let’s keep him fit.I’m sure there’s something wrong with the training methods here as we get more long term injuries than any other clubs.

You all say Kightly will be ‘gone’ if we dont get promoted? And what? I Say fair play to him.

Why should he be condemned to a footballing career at a mediocre level, when he’s clearly capable of more? Just like lescott and olofinjana were.

I also say thanks to the both of them and now kightly for giving us a chance unlike the majority of footballers would do nowadays.

We need to start taking our chances. Fingers crossed for 08/09.

    You wolves x

Superb news, if there is a clause, all I would say is if we have players on long term contracts then we simply hold out for big money moves from any interested party. But forget that, Kightly staying, SEB too all being well, Let’s just hope July brings us a decent centre back or two to compete to playing along side Craddock, failing that should give Little another go as he’s played there before.

  20. Bridget & Tony said:

Never say never - Kites has signed a new contract - It does not mean that he cant be sold if the price is right!

Some fans need to get a reality check - there are no Steve Bull types left in the world of football - unless you play for one of the Big 4 in the Prem or Real Madrid

Money talks and players walk - A new improved deal is a sign that the player will be here for maybe another season or IF we get promoted next season - If not - dont count on Kites staying for another season or MM for that matter!

So hopefully MM will get his act together and bring in some decent players - starting with a couple of centre half’s

Big George gave us a few seasons and is now off elsewhere - cant blame him that’s life!

  21. booty said:

Excellent news, let’s just hope there’s no gentlemans agreement, although if we don’t get promotion this year, who could blame him for wanting to leave, could prove to be the best signing of the season!

Just an observation, you lot are never happy the lad signs a 4 year deal which is fantastic news for you then you all start with the he’ll be off if we don’t get up!. Give him and old Moxley a break they must feel like they are hitting their heads up against brick walls with you lot. Football is a food chain, the better players will always get picked off by the bigger clubs and there is no getting away from it for all of us. In the era of the bosman it makes perfect sense to tie your better players down to long term deals as you will command a good transfer fee for the when they eventually do go.

Fair play to Kightly though for giving it another go, joking apart I would have liked him at the Baggies I think he is quality.

    Up the Baggies!!!

Absolutely superb news! Kites, SEB, Henners and all are our future.
Most likely a release clause is included, so the pressure is on to achieve THIS SEASON!!
Hopefully Moxey and Mr Morgan will loosen the strings a little to ensure we get some more quality to join the young guns.
2 CBs, 1 LB, 1 Midfielder and 1 striker of quality still required IMO to get a spauad with real automatic potential.
    Up the Wolves!

What are the clauses in his contract though? £5mil get out clause, gentleman’s agreement if we fail to make promotion. It all sounds good but is it really?

30 Agreed - Was thinking more of the likes of Ryan Giggs more than the false Ronaldo (not his real name as most Portugese players adopt Brazillian footballers names)

On the upside Kites has given Wolves poetic license to sell him for a decent fee, If or When MM fails to deliver!

The “sport” is being eroded out of the game more and more - a very sad state of affairs when the sport and the fans dont seem to matter much anymore!

As the Stranglers song once said “Whatever happened to - All of the Heroes? - or certainly the “characters” in the beautiful game???

  38. Jonny B said:

This is great news, so what if he has a clause to leave at the end of the season if we don’t get up. I believe he only owes us one more season and if we are not in the Prem by then he must leave for the sake of his own career, same as Lescott did and he now has full England caps. Why should Kites not get paid the same as other people at the club he is clearly one of our best players. Thanks Kites and heres to having a great injury free season.

  39. MARCOWOLVO said:

    GREAT NEWS !
Lets storm that division next year, i for one am fed up of looking relying on other teams to lose points in order for us to gain a play off spot. Lets win the league and do it in style, we have the team (yes we do still need 2 new cefenders), the spport, the financial backing and the promise of a new exciting bigger molineux as a reward when we get there.
COME ON BOYS… OUT OF DARKNESS COMETH LIGHT !

  40. NathanWolves said:

33, telford, yes you are correct i did say that, but only if he wanted to leave and gave it the big’un. He has not done that or indicated it either. From his comments above he sounds committed to wolves and the cause so therefore he is alright in my book.
If he was to give it loads like Ronaldo then he should rot, but he has sorted his future out and not kept us waiting, so fair play to him and Jez Moxey!

  41. Dublin Wolves said:

Simple really now, we all know there will be a gentlemans agreement on the cards, just get promoted so it doesnt have to happen!!
If it doesnt happen Kites deserves a fair crack in the premier league so he then can go for a nice profit, either way its really win/win for wolves!

Agree we need to sort this Berra one out soon, would be a good signing, dont know about Gravesen though, not really of the Paul Ince type in my opinion, Ince gives 100% for everything where as Gravesen appears to be looking for his last pension pay days, agree we need the ince type midfield man, but dont think we would find that in Gravesen. Carsley would of been ideal attitude wise, one I would be interested in is Chris Sedgewick from Preston, would probably get him for 1mil and has been a regular for preston for a few years now! any thoughts on him?

Forget about gentleman’s agreements. If we don’t succeed this year, players like Hennessey, Kites, Ebanks-Blake, will look elsewhere and why shouldn’t they?

It’s Wolves stated objective to get to the Premiership, preferably by automatic promotion. Michael Kightly is quality–it’s essential we keep him if we’re to have a chance for automatic promotion in 2008-09. But let’s face facts, he’s been at Mol for nearly two years and we’re not in the Prem yet. What Moxey has avoided is Wolves taking one step further away from the Premiership, like we did last year when we lost Michael McIndoe.

Kightly was injured for much of last season, so it’s not likely that many Premiership clubs were beating a path to the door to sign him right now. Also, he already had three years to run on his contract, so it’s hardly a major achievement to persuade him to stay. If we’d lost him it would have been a major failure. I’m glad he’s signed–we need him next season and we want as much money as possible if and when he goes, but it’s amazing the way the Moxeymorons slobber at the mouth and dribble down their chins every time Jez does the most straightforward and basic job.

I’m glad Moxey hasn’t repeated the Ince and McIndoe fiascos with Kightly, but I’m reserving my judgement until he’s significantly strengthened the team. That’s something he’s failed to do in every one of the last five years. I’m hoping that Morgan will kick Jez up the ass and change that! But the Moxeymorons pee in their pants and dance with joy at Jez’s oft-repeated misses of the promotion target! They love failure!
