Wolves want £3m for Olofinjana

seyi.jpgWolves have fulfilled a gentleman’s agreement to accept Seyi Olofinjana’s transfer request – but they want £3m for the midfielder.

The 28-year-old, who is currently away on international duty with Nigeria, made his intentions clear in writing on Friday.

Bolton and Wigan are now on alert for the former Brann Bergen player, who arrived from the Norwegian club for £1.75m four years ago.

The likely departure of Olofinjana – who only signed a four-year deal last summer – has echoes of Joleon Lescott’s exit two years ago.

Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “At the time of signing a new contract with Seyi last year, we agreed that should the club miss out on promotion at the end of the 2007-08 season, we would circulate his name for transfer if that was what he wished.

“As expected, Seyi has now made that request and we are therefore following through on our commitment. He has now been placed on the transfer list.

“As an experienced senior international player, who has not only served Wolves well but re-signed, instead of holding out to becoming a free agent this summer.

“He has given us the opportunity of recouping our financial investment in him to help us buy new players.”

Olofinjana scored 16 goals in 135 League appearances since signing for former boss Dave Jones.

He was 10-goal top scorer in Mick McCarthy’s first season but had a disappointing campaign last term with the additional burden of the African Nations Cup.

Olofinjana insisted his desire to move was not for money.

He said: “If offers come in, a lot of things would have to happen for me to leave.”

“But if it was down to money, I would have left Wolves long ago.”

The Nigerian scored just three times in 36 Championship games in 2007-08 and admits he has failed to scale his previous heights.

He said: “It was a really frustrating season for me and my performances weren’t always the best. I was below par and disappointing.”

if we get 3m for him ill buy moxey a pie and a pint, not get brian howard!!
so much for his one ambition of getting us promoted hey

Well thats JUST what we bloody need! Maybe stop looking for even more strikers and concentrate on strengthening the midfield now… and on that note, am i right in saying we still havnt got a full defence yet?!
    Farewell Seyi, all the best!

Cheers Seyi, although you can be a bit lightweight at times, you’ve been a great MF for the club and Good luck in the future.

The only positive thing out of this issue… all the best Olly, hope we get at least £3m for you..

i think this is the best move for both club and player. loyal servant who at this stage needs to move on. fair play to both wolves and the player for agreeing a contract with those terms. good luck oli.

  7. los lobos said:

“I just want to do my best for Wolves etc” “its not about money”…lets get rid quickly as possible. Says it all really MM must have known he was on his way but he is fixated with signing more strikers. Where does that leave us now?

  8. Eddie Wolf said:

Good riddance I say! He is over-rated and last season, didnt look bothered at all, lazy game after game, and just marking space. The only time he did work was when we signed Edwards and his position in the squad was under threat.

  9. Loyal-Cannock-Wolf said:

‘George’ admits he was below par last season, so perhaps this move is best for both parties, also he gets a crack at the Prem. He deserves his chance.

I think 3m is a fair price. Steve Bruce has been after him for 2 seasons now.

LET HIM GO IF YOU CAN GET £3 MIL!!!!
Tackles like a fairy and only plays well in one game in six!!!!

KIND OF SAD TO SEE HIM GO!?! HE IS SO INCONSISTENT ITS FRUSTRATING! ONE GAME HE IS RUBBISH, THE NEXT HE IS THE BEST IN THE LEAGUE!

GOOD LUCK GEORGE WHERE EVER YOU GO!

  12. scottnorth said:

fair enough if he wants to go. He hasn’t had the best of season, although on his day he is prem quailty, but you dont see it much. I think theres better players we cud get for 3mil if thts wht we got for him.

    great news

3m for this donkey. so much for 10goals to get us promoted. seyi at times looks good but this is once or twice a season

if he plays well then wolves always win. but he never produces. maybe its because he hasnt had a break past few summers?

but 3m thank you seyi now please leave

well wat a surprise it was only the other day he said he cant wait for season to start and lookin for to it,how can it change in a few days.in a way im glad you are goin u are useless and 3million you am jokin ay ya wolves,y do all our players think there better than they are wen they cant get us out this league byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  15. booty said:

Absolute disgrace, what makes the player think that he has earned a transfer request, surely he should be looking to make it up to the wolves for last years disaster of a season.
Great player on his day, but he is too inconsistent a performer to me to play in such a key position, the match against the Albion showed that.
If someone offers 3m I’d rip their hands off

Had a poor season last season. We have Edwards now, Davies, Gleeson and Henry - another who did not have a good season.
People laughed at me a few months ago about what he is worth in the current market. We will get £2 - 3 million for him. Bruce and Megson are known admirers. Get rid and get Gravesen!

  21. maltamick said:

whats going on here? he recently stated he was looking forward to the coming season with us !!! anyway i won’t be too disappointed he’s going as his performances last year wern’t brilliant. for a big man he didn’t put himself about too much. perhaps now we can push the boat out and get Gravesen.

Let him go the guys plays one good match in ten and not enough goals for me.
Hope he goes to Tesco Town as he wont perform in the Prem.
Mind you could they really afford him in Tesco Town..lol
Maybe if we let him go for £100k they might have a chance but will lose him if a BIG club comes in anyway.lol

    Kiwiwolfffffffffff

  25. Baldeaglewolf said:

Is it me…or is signing a contract a complete waste of time these days? Seems yet another of our “experienced” players is about to move on then. Still, £3 million (if we can get it!) would not be bad for one of last years underperformers, plus the fact that he is always away on International duty!

  26. B/stoke Wolf said:

3 Million - all day long. Be amazed if any one comes in with that sort of bid but would glady accept what we paid for him. Dont think adds much to the team. Many poor performances last season.
Who are we going to get to beef up the back line is my worry

  27. Wednesbury Wolf said:

Well at least he won’t go on a free! As for all the express and star hype about him fighting for his position…..he was bordering on useless last season so if we can get good money then so be it! If his heart is not at the club then terrah for now. Lets get the centre half’s we require to shore up the defence and a couple of addition for the midifeld and forward line.
    Keep the faith people!

  28. Filtonwolf (Bristol) said:

Saw this one coming. Pity, but if he wants to go, let him. Don’t want players who won’t be committed to the club. Perhaps he wasn’t pleased at the rumours about midfielders coming in ? If the E&S is right (and I know that’s a big IF !!) Graveson from Celtic would be the ideal hardman in midfield for a couple of seasons - I reckon he’d last that long. Still need to chase Berra though and one other CB.

Good! Ca pass Ca run Ca tackle, get howard in from barnsley or try davies-both are much better. when was the last time he ran a game for wolves?
Midfield next year of kightly, jarvis, edwards, henry, davies, gobern + a battler and we’ll be laughin!
2 new centre halfs and a target man and we’ll be trading places with the baggies next year!!!!!! oh yes…….going up the mad mc nugget way!!!!!

  33. South_Bank_Wolves said:

This story comes as an article on the Wolves website says his big target is to get wolves promoted this season….. either he’s saying were better off without him or another false story for the E&S paper to help sales!!!!

  34. No ifs or buts said:

If he wants to leave, then good luck, thank you and goodbye.

At 28years of age, the potential signing of David Jones and the growing experience of young David Edwards, would have put his place in jeopardy. A fully fit Mark Davies could be another factor ( hopefully )!

It probably is a good time for him to move and suit both parties.

  35. chopper said:

one of the two holding mids has to make way for a attacking mid maybe we will score more without six defenders on the pitch all the best to him

If you knew you were going anyway you should have just kept your mouth shut George!!

  38. South_Bank_Wolves said:

I take my comment back - its on the Wolves website now too! Seems he knew he couldnt help wolves to the Prem - took him 4 days to realise though!!!! All the best to him but what i still want to know is where are the signings (other than that of strikers!!!)

  49. rsbaggy said:

£3m for someone who spends a fair chunk of time on international duty?? Based on recent form the guy is not worth half that. Only reason that the club have accepted is that £3m would constitute football fraud on a massive scale. Hmm let me see £3m for ‘Seyi And-do-nothing’; Koren must be worth £7-8m on that basis.

  50. London Wolf said:

    totally disinterested in this.

By your own admittance you have not performed well this season, but I think you are not far form being a special talent. Good luck in the future, and thank you for being a gentlemen in your transfer. Its rare to see players care about the club they are leaving.

That gentlemans agreement was kept quiet wasn’t it ! Decent player but not too sad to see him go, good luck at furthering your career at massive clubs bolton or wigan ! Hope this isn’t the start of a mass exodus though. Like to see Brian Howard from barnsley at molineux

He wasn’t alone! I think Seyi could be great on his day but unfortunately he never quite had enough of those for us. Maybe a move would be a good thing for both him and the club. At least he didn’t hold out to run off for a free. Good on him for not wanting to short change the club.
I wish him well, he’s a rare thing in the modern game, a gentleman.

  57. mart said:

sorry to see you go Oli. See like a real gentleman of a player, fair enogh to move on.

If we can get 3mil, how about putting in a bid of 4 mil for Ledley? We need to really strengthen that midfield (and defence, obviously).

We CANNOT afford to sell ebanks-blake though - the Everton rumours are gathering pace - we need a proven goalscorer who will do the business…

Why are some people slaughtering the guy? We all agree he was disappointing last season and £3m would be great business. But he was a good servant for 4 years and could have fled for nothing.

Brian Howard or Ben Watson should be absolute priorities to strengthen midfield. Moxey will never agree wages with Gravesen so that’s a non-starter.

All our news seems to be about exits. While other clubs are doing business and stealing a march we are, as ever, trying to screw down the last penny on deals. Did we have a £30million takeover?

sorry have to disagree with most of the comments here. Dave Jones big signings in the championship were all players who could play in the premiership like Ince, Irwin and Seyi whose class, technique and balls skills are just too good for many of the players in our squad. Well done Seyi for not just walking away on a free and also to Moxey for getting him to sign a new contract.
A least we will recoup the fee we spent on him.
Good luck whichever club you go to as long as its 100 miles from sandwell.
Oh lets see how much we will miss him come august and what lower league crap MM brings in as a “replacement”. If MM is really serious about promotion he will need to bring in a experience midfield prem player and pay his wages.

This has been coming since the end of last season. Those who criticise MM should at least give him credit for knowing his players intentions. Any player is able to move whenever they want to, regardless of contracts, just look at the pantomime unfolding at Man U. For what it’s worth I think Oli is great on his day but he has too many off days. Give me Mark Davies any time. Good to see you back Sbba but this is our season all of the MM knockers will eat humble pie.

    100. i know i think he is more defensive built than attacking, and twoddle had him playing as holding midfieler but for us under MM he has been an attacking midfielder. its only like potter werent a right winger lol we know he aint a central midfielder either but when he played there he and MM got slaughtered for him playing on RW.
but fact is oli has been our AM for 2 seasons now and in my eyes contributed nothing.
perhaps that may be one of the reasons he wants to leave i dont know, might be yet another case of square peg in round hole scenario. if he had played holding midfielder and we had a decent AM then perhaps oli wouldnt get the stick he does. his passing capacity is very limited, little sideways passes abit like an defensive midfielder would, but not defense splitting passes!
perhaps im a bit harsh on him, but like i said he as been the attacking force from CM and provided nothing and on that basis he aint good enough!!

For all of you that are getting fed up waiting for signings - may I remind you that it is only 23rd June and most players/agents/staff are probably still away on hols, not many other clubs have made many signings either! Wolves are well known for not announcing anything until the deal is done, there is 2 months left on the transfer window and I for one am willing to wait and see who EVENTUALLY joins us, probably some of whom will not even have been mentioned in connection with us. I also don’t believe e-b, kights or hennessey will leave despite the papers trying to sell copies to people desperate for transfer news! There, I feel better now :-)

i think next season will be our time because all the team will pull together well and there will be no big egos in the club and were all going forward together. We needed to get rid of players such as freddy and seyi because they were dividing the fans and possibly the team so this is such good news up the wolves

Preferably M.GRADEL as he is a quality player had a craking season at bournmouth last season and is probably better than kightly and jarvis put together !!

Have a look the coloured chap on the wing for bournmouth for ( SAM VOKES GOALS ON YOUTUBE ) CRAKING PLAYER !!

GET THEM IN QUICK MICK !! UP THE WOLVES !!

Clear off then and take MM and JM with you. What did Blackburn see that the Wolves ownership didn’t ? Ive got a bad feeling about next season.

Its been the same every year that JM has been here, pre season spin ‘possible targets’ ‘potential targets’ then nothing. What fools do you think we are.

These young lads who are coming through the ranks, must wonder if they will ever get a chance, all the club wants to do is buy players, what about the development of our own local players. Im sure they would be more loyal to the club than some of these cash hungry lot we have now.

On a second note nothing to do with this article. Go get em Ince Good Luck in the next step of your managerial career. Wish you had got the job at Wolves. I’ll never forget what you did for us Thank You.

If they get £3m for him that could be a great bit of busines. We have so many young midfielders in this squad so the competition is already there without Seyi. All the best to him, will be interesting to see how he fairs in the Prem.

Bye bye Seyi, can’t say you’ll be missed, a big bloke who’s scared to put a foot in, can’t play the simplest of passes and makes luca toni look good in front of goal!! 3mil?? that’s funnier than the 5mil valuation of McLean.

A fit Mark Davies next season would be like a new signing if stubborn Mick played him

News just in ? Abrahamovich is gonna offer Essien + £5m for Seyi lol. Gravesen is ideal, said for ages we need a midfield general. Let Seyi go.

  140. McCarthys Last Stand said:

He considers himself to be an attacking mid-fielder, but with our dire defence he has had to become a defending mid-fielder, and that accounts for his scoring rate last season.

It was down to clueless Mick yet again! I think George’s move is down to that as much as money. He doesn’t want another season like the last one. Neither do the supporters, which is why season ticket sales are way down on last season.

  141. wednesbury1 said:

Once target of wolves Alan gow cant get in the rangers side. attacking midfielder would not be a bad signing £400.000 fill the centre of midfield a bargain i think he’s only 25.

On a serious note, not happy about Mr Moyes of the city of Liverpool’s 2nd team commenting that 5m was overpriced for SEB… he got a bargain in Lescott, 5m and he must be worth at least 10m now ! Hands off SEB.
Lets keep Everton scouts out of our ground unsettling our players - Moxey: please read.
    Priority signings in my opinion:
    2 solid central defenders.
1 midfield “general” - we need someone hard as nails.
1 striker to complement EB as long as we offload those that didnt hit the mark.
We have competition in the squad in all other areas.

Dave Edwards is a better player. £3m is extortionate for this guy and Moxey knows it.

It will seem wierd now as George was automatically in the starting 11, and i dont see why people are pleased. He has served this club terifically and never made it as a fan favourite, yet he is if not the best holding midfielder in this league.
All we need now for experience is clinton morrison on a free, ian harte on a free, berra for 2mill and another midfielder and defender.
Also keep the one and only Eastwood !!!

Bit different from the headline 4 days ago. Would love to get 3mil for a player who has never lived upto the ‘Viera’ of the CCC???

Beat E&S to their announcement this morning - but they still have not picked up on the Morrisson thing yet - George would be a good signing for Ince as he could help develope him as a player - its a shame the same cant be said for MM - But hey at least Mick taught the lad what it means to put in a “shift”

Dont be surprised if Wolves go in for Clinton Morrisson on a free transfer ;-)

Have you had a self awareness by-pass. You’re the one that spent most of last close season posting on our site about ‘rats leaving sinking ship.’ Out of 151 posts so far very few from Baggies and the only one to mention a sinking ship is Terry who’s done it to wind you up.

Is that the Howard Jones that had a hit with ‘what is love’ in the 80s.

  153. PennfieldsWolf said:

Too many people knock our players and then wander why they want to leave. In Seyi’s case it’s probably that another international player has had words with him and told him to move up as soon as he can because he ain’t getting any younger. Whilst he may not have a great game every game, which one of us can say that we perform to our highest standard of work, day after day after day? Your real sentiment is known when you then go on to say ..” who are we going to get to replace him now..?”.

He’s an international player and the important bit - on his day a match for anyone! He’s also a very pleasant guy if you’ve ever met him off the field.

I wish him all the best and at least we can use the money we get from his sale to get a comparable unknown, as he was when he came to us.

  154. Bridget & Tony said:

153 Dont kid yourself - Players move on for money and better terms

If every player took much notice of fan power most of Newcastles team would have walked a long time back!

You conveniently forget when the same Wolves fans cheered the lads on even when we were getting thrashed by Saints at home - So how does your logic apply then?

George has every right to move on like any other employee - Dont get on the Moxey and MM - Blame the fans band wagon - Its just convenient/ lame excuse for failure and not getting promoted!

om yer bike oli you did more dreaming than dribbling only problem is I dont think anybody will want you.Can keogh the lightweight come with you please!!!!!

  156. Nippy Lobo said:

I don’t know what’s behind Oli saying he’s looking forward to playing for Wolves one day, and us being told he’s moving on four days later. But at least consider the possibility he was sincere when he said he wanted to stay, and Wolves pushed him. After all, Jez Moxey knew what was in the contract.

All we’ve got is what Moxey told us. He’s a born mean accountant and probably wants to get his mitts on that £3m to help him buy. He can’t admit it though, can he, because he and MM have been telling us all for two months that Wolves are not going to sell?

Whatever the truth is, I’m not too concerned about this. I think Oli is a good athlete and an intelligent player, but sometimes he is too slow making up his mind and holds up quick-breaking attacks. Also, he is often too tardy getting away his shots.

I think both Oli and Wolves need a change. Good luck to him! I hope another coach can jazz him up a bit. And I hope Wolves can replace him with someone, whether from within or without, who is faster on the uptake and faster on his feet.

Shut up, Wolfie! You’re an obsessive nut case when it comes to Keogh! Trapatoni really rates him. What are you trying to do–drive out one of our most talented players?
