Wolverhampton’s Dean Powell may stay on as Amir Khan’s trainer after helping the former Olympic star to victory in Birmingham.
Powell trained Khan to victory over Manchester’s Michael Gomez at a packed National Indoor Arena on Saturday, extending his unbeaten run as a professional to 18 fights.
And Powell, who was appointed trainer for one fight after Khan’s fall-out with Oliver Harrison, may stay on for the Bolton lightweight’s next fight, scheduled for September 6.
“Working with Dean has been different,” said Khan, who stopped Gomez five rounds into a thriller.
“We have been working on different things, especially the jab. I felt it in round four when I was throwing straight shots and jabs and every shot was catching him.
“I have had a great, tough camp, working with Dean and my strength conditioner. I am getting stronger and better with every fight.”
Powell took over from Harrison two months ago, but he has worked in Khan’s corner for each of his previous 17 bouts as a pro.
He is now hoping to stay involved with Khan as the Olympic silver medallist targets a world title shot.
He said: “It’s been fantastic. Amir is a great professional. In the next couple of weeks we will sit down and Amir will make a decision.
“I would think I will still be involved somehow. I have done my job, I’ve been involved since day one and I hope I will stay involved until the finish.”
