absolutely awesome!!!! journey were bang on last night in every way, the setlist was superb, the band were note perfect and arnel is the real deal, he is at last the worthy successor to steve perry. last time out in birmingham (march ‘07) the band didn’t get the crowd reaction they deserved, the crowd last night were magnificent and it showed in the reaction of the band.
to the guys in the band, dont bother with birmingham next time, head straight to the civic, you will be welcomed back time and time again.

I’ve been a rock fan for more years than I care to remember, and go to about 75 gigs a year. This is possibly the best concert I have ever attended. The performance was near perfect, as was the set-list, the atmosphere in the Civic was phenomenal. Hats off to the Civic for putting the show on and for the excellent way it was run.

My 15 year old daughter and myself (45) travelled from Derby to Wolves civic instead of opting for the nearby Nottingham arena. Great decision. The intimacy of the Civic was fantastic. Journey were brilliant and the crowd during Don’t stop believing made your hair stand on end. Lets hope there’s another Journey to the Civic soon.

“”"”But Journey’s signature tune is not called Don’t Stop Believin’ for nothing, and last night Pineda in particular triumphed,,,,,,,,,,

I’m sorry, but isn’t that the very definition of “Karaoke”?

It’s very good TofuSteak, at best. ;)

its not KARAOKE , its called the Legendary sound.. and Arnel is doing a GREAT job..

id love to see him perform

i dont know whatäs wrong with you people.. if he does not sound like Perry, you complain..

if he sounds like Perry you bash him saying he’s no originality, copycat, karaoke, trying to be Steve Perry..

you people are just tryng to find a hole in everythng..

you can never be satisfied and happy..

    grow up!

Isn’t it a very good karaoke? Try to do karaoke so you’ll know what good music is. It can start from there, you know.

By the way,you said it’s tofu at its best.Probably you’ve tried eating it many times. I’m sure you like Arnel.Just couldn’t admit. It’s not yet too late.Just love the music!

    stopped believin,

your username exposes your bitterness and prejudice! Really, Rolling Stone gave the highest rating that JOURNEY ever got with the new Revelation CD, compared to the 2 star ratings or even lower ratings they got when Perry was fronting it! So to say that JRNY’s performance is karaoke is absolutely senseless and illogical! Mainstream media like New York Times, Melodic Rock, GQ, TIME Magazine have embraced the present line-up with ‘open arms’ so your stand is pointless and is stale already!

  12. MyJourney said:

Best concert ever! Arnel is way much better than Steve Perry. They got the best selling album in the market right now and I believe they are going all the way to the top!

Hey stoppedbelieven, I don’t know how long you’ve stopped believing but I think you are in the wrong commentary section because we are Journey Fans and no matter how bad your comments are about the Journey, people love them and there is nothing you can do about it so let it go! So what if Arnel is trying to impersonate Steve Perry? You have nothing invested on them! Last time I checked, there were no Pineda and Perry in the karaoke definition. You’re just a frustrated loser and you’re just wasting time here so scramp!

  13. Heero said:

For some reasons, i don’t know why some people keep calling Arnel a karaoke singer. I wonder if the 2 previous singer were titled like this, think not, coz they’re not from the third world country. Are we not happy enough that one of the greatest rock band from 70’s just came back to continue the journey. Just a simple advise, just enjoy the music.

I’ved known Arnel for quite long since he starts performing in hongkong and i don’t think that he was impersonating Steve Perry, if some of you watched his videos from different cover song you wouldn’t believed how he sang those different songs, it’s just happened that he was discovered singing some of journeys song, i think it’s just pure luck that brought him whatever he was now.

  17. stoppedbelievin said:

typical,,, someone disagrees with you, and you attack.,,,, ME…

I didn’t attack anyone here - I just gave my opinion about some music - and about a band I have obviously followed longer than, and know more about, than many of you here,,, , And I love how some insinuate prejudice when you are the ones that are being small minded… trying to bully someone personally for their ideas, instead of just stating your opinion,,,,
I have ALL of Journey’s music, INCLUDING Arrival, Generations, Red 13, AND Revelation….
And YES, - ALL of the replacement singers have been called Steve Perry impersonators, because that is what Neal Schon and Co, have insisted on.
Jrny called Steve Augeri “Steve Perry with a perm” to illustrate how much they thought he sounded like Perry.
They fired Jeff Scott Soto, when they saw that Arnel could do Perry better than him…

This is not about Arnel, who’s story is remarkable, and ALMOST makes up for Jrny’s obsession with coping Perry’s voice, instead of focusing on just making great music, … I have tried to support Schon – but instead of “moving on” he has been obsessed with staying in the past,,, and the lack of guts and creativity disappoints me… (Not to mention the way they’ve treated the previous singers - which does not bode well for Arnel - whose story is the ONLY reason they’ve garnered so much attention (from Ellen, Sunday Morning,,) But will he get his fair share for bringing in the lion’s share of attention? I wouldn’t bet on it)
This is why I’ve “stopped believing”…you disagree, fine,,, say so,,, say why,,,

But I guess that requires more thought than just an aggressive jab in my direction,,,,

How weak you are,,, yeah, that was personal…

God help us if we disagree on something more important than a rock band…

May you have the experience of open discourse some day…

    ~ peace

I am also a SP & Journey fan in Open Arms.
Now, a Journey & AP fan but still respect SP. Somehow, some of us misunderstand other people’s opinions due to loyalty and ended up reactive, if not over-reactive. Anyway, I think it is best that we all just have an open mind with Open Arms, enjoy the music and have fun…. :)

We saw Journey at Newcastle last night and it was a brilliant show but, for me, not as good as last year when they had Jeff Scott Soto. I don’t know why the band sacked him but I thought JSS’ voice was more powerful than the new singer and that he had more charisma and stage presence. Arnel did a good job but - and this is a personal opinion - not great. I did not leave the concert on a high as I had done at the gig last year although that could have something to do with the venue as well. What didn’t help was the presence of an extremely loud and selfish woman a row or two back from us - she insisted on talking to her friends throughout the entire gig and her voice managed to carry even over the thumping noise from the band! I could tell that the people on the row directly in front of her were really irritated. Why on earth pay good money for tickets to see a band and then spend its entirety talking to someone and looking away from the stage! Still, well done Journey!

To all perryloons out there–here’s a message from Perry:

Truth HURTS, isn’t it! 60 years old GRANDPA perry has stage fright, arthritis and bone problems…even IF he wants to..he just can’t sing anymore!

” I am not part of Journey and I haven’t been since 1998. I get what you are saying but you don’t have to shoot the horse just because the rider doesn’t want to take him out anymore and you don’t have to change the Horse’s name either just because he has a new rider.”

I am addicted listening to the new Journey Revelation cd. Listening to the new songs from beginning to end, I hear Arnel’s signature voice (not SP). AMAZING voice!!! My two girls who are 7 and 10 years old listens to Journey’s cd as well. I highly recommend their new cd. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTE (that is a promise).

  25. Ron Excelzeus said:

Enought said about our revered SP, he is the past of journey that we always love to hear; unfortunately, he quit on us. AP just continued this band’s legacy. BTW AP has 25 years under his belt, mostly entertaining US Navy and Marine Corps personnel in Subic Bay back in the 80s. His vocal versatility ranges from Robert Plant to SP. I believe his emergence as the new Journey voice is a win-win situation for us, him, and the band. If you don’t like him, just play JRNY’s old Greatest Hits. Solved.

Stopbelievin– You are entitled to your opinion as I am of mine. But yours is not an opinion, you are clearly bashing Arnel PIneda and trying to give the impression that you were actually at the concert and seen him perform live like some of the people that posted here who actually seen him live! But at the end you have personal issues with Neal Schon instead and bitter about SP no longer part of Journey. MOve on Perry is long gone.

it’s a normal reactions from both sides of fans who find positiveness or negativeness about AP or SP. That’s how people are..they are not very good in “changes” especially when they have attached themselves with singers that they have idolized during their past times…it brings fond memories..no die hard fans like to see replacements of idols that they had invested their heart with..I personally will find it very difficult to switch from one singer to another for the same songs..the original that caught one’s heart and passion is what you call, “first love.” First love never dies… Anyone who will replace the original will be in position to be scrutinized by the public fans… Arnel is in a very challenging position especially as he’s not from USA; his looks are not quite like old SP nor his culture; Let’s be honest here, no singers including SP have been perfect. They all miss their notes few times..but no one tend to see or pick on this if it’s their favorite singer..it’s ok for SP to miss few notes..and it’s gone unnoticed..but it has to go noticed and remarked with the new singers. .Many fans will come up or find anything negative to put him down…it’s easier for people to be negative than positive..in any aspect of life…it’s the fear of loosing the old passion and loyalty…I have stepped back and listened to Arnel on You Tube and on DVD, Revelation CD….both have similar tenor type of voices..unique in their own ways; SP seem to be softer in his voice; Ap have a stronger voice; there are times when both sound alike. It’s your personal preference…so be respectful of people’s preferences instead of battling about who is right or wrong. But the point is you cannot please everyone in life..or else music will not make the world go round. I personally think AP’s Re-recorded Revelation songs are great..we tend to feel that AP is impersonating SP..that’s coz AP sings SP originals..but for the new songs, AP is the original…now how about saying that SP is impersonating AP with the new songs….I’m not a Filipino so I’m not sharing my comments based on my support for my countrymen. I am sharing my thoughts based on what I believe that all the reactions and comments I’ve been reading are just some natural reactions. Let’s give some credit to the new singer, AP, who does have some considerable set of pipes..for those who are die hard SP fans…if he did not, Journey would not have given him the job. Life is a Journey..a journey that should be moving forward..to grow and nurture what we have now..as we have enjoyed SP “After all these years.”

Of all the singers after Perry, Arnel is the best.

For Stoppedbelievin..Steve Augeri was not fired. He had to stepped down because of throat infection. Jeff Scott Sotto..well..journey music does not suit his style..The concert with him singing was so bad.

The band is doing very very well since they have Arnel. They had a concert here in Canada few years ago with Steve Augeri, and the audience were just clapping politely. And the venue was just half full and it only housed like 2,500 people..lol I left the concert very disappointed ..lol

And now with Arnel, the audience are very energetic and they most of the venues were packed..Good for them.

Labelling Arnel Karaoke or Perry’s copy-cat only fuels people’s desire to find out how really sounds, and that will propel them to the height of greater popularity..AMEN

  33. nemerbe said:

To all journey fans who can not accept Arnel Pineda too bad..he is the man now not Steve Perry.

The past 2 singers after Parry did not generate this much publicity and scrutiny, and with Arnel almost everyone is talking about him. That’s his natural voice, not just trying to emulate Perry.

Perry was then, and Arnel is now..GO JOURNEY GO

arnel never seek fortune or fame they found him via utube singing somewhere in manila, philippines. with his voice, energy and personalities he brings magic and interest to younger listeners not exposed to journey’s legacy 20 or 30 yrs ago. the fact that journey offered the job to him makes the equation more interesting to all of us who has been touched by thier music under steve perry. arnel did more than i expected from frontman of a rock icon. you can see and feel the harmony in the
group’s performance, they just plain rock it out and have tons of fun showing thier passion to us. they love and respect arnel for what and from where he has been and the perrsonalities he projects.. what else is more important than all members are happy campers
giving thier best! right now arnel is the biggest small guy on stage and journey bandmates is loving it! so do we!
journey thank you for coming back to our lives,
listening to your revelation album makes driving fun and quick!

arnel pineda is a pure filipino in all aspects of his physical and personal attributes so associating him to a non basis “kareoke guy” is out of line because “kareoke” for those unfamiliar with the word is a japanese term of “KARA”oke for “empty” and kara”OKE” for “orchestra” thus kareoke means empty-orchestra. arnel has been singing with a
true and live band since he started his career.
so it’s either ignorance or arrogance
to say that arnel is a karaoke guy. there is just no way to change the pitch, tempo and musical score of a song in the middle of a live and true band concert. arnel has been hitting all journey’s song from the start to the end with his powerful and soulful voice
unheard of since the original guy left the band for cold. what’s interesting here is
the guy is discovered on the other side of the planet almost 8,000 miles away from journey’s
studio, he never even been to america and has never been exposed to american and european audiences. for him to come out and perform like he has been doing it for years is just pure talent and magic. journey is enjoying thier success again. to those skeptics please, please get off the way you might not know what’s coming at you and it’s coming fast!

In the Philippines, people never labeled Arnel as Steve Perry of the Philippines. It was after the YT phenomena and non-Filipinos labeled him that way.
Karaoke term is Japanese but a Filipino guy invented that karaoke machine.
Karaoke? Go to Philippines and you will enjoy how Filipinos do their karaoke gigs.
Arnel is not only a superb artist but a very nice person. Filipinos love him as a person more than his voice. There are so many talented artists/singers in the Philippines but Arnel has a good heart. You can not see nor feel any air from him - very humble person. When did you hear any negative comment from him? For a guy who never finished school, he possesses a great deal of wisdom.

truth hurts…arnel can sing and the reason why they cannot accept him is because hes FILIPINO not American….FILIPINO is also a human being who can sing just like american…and to respect to SP fan….SP QUIT and he is in the 70s and 80s frontman……let me remind you its 2008 and its APs year for the new generation.ADMIT it….hes a great singer even if hes FILIPINO..so GROW up and forget the racist

  38. obet said:

kareoke used to be called sing-alone machine by trebel music amplifier in the very early 80’s (1979-81)designed by a filipino to generate interest to a singing contest in the student canteen program in the philippines..it used a guitar like amplifiers and a cassette tape. later years it was improved by yamaha then others follow, pick-uped by the japanese and by their influence and wealth with technology they replaced it with
the word kareoke instead of sing-alone.

the same fate happened to a filipino invented sport the “sipa ball” was copied by thai or singapore then replaced the name of the sport into “sepak takraw”.

This is a fact. Steve Perry is the original Voice of Journey. Arnel Pineda has to fill in the shoes of the Voice, and did it with flying colours. If Arnel Pineda happens to be first lead vocal of Journey and they found Steve Perry to replace Arnel, I don’t think it’s gonna happen because Steve can not fill in the shoes of Arnel. Period.

I take it as a complement (having a karaoke). It means the audience has so accepted the current singer, comfortable enough to sing with him, more repertoire. As opposed to a quiet crowd, to me is a hostile and unreceptive sign.
Bravo Journey….., not only did I read it twice that AP was a great find, but all the band members agree. (Read GQ June issue), AP indeed exceeds expectations… he has more passion, energy to top his great voice.

I wonder what the response would have been if Robert Plant had quit Zeppelin and they replaced him with some other guy/gal. The passing of Bonham ended Zep. They knew it would never be the sam and closed shop forever. Neal needs to move on and write music using HIS gifts and talents, not the sounds of those who have made it for him.

For those Journey purists, Neal is the only real original member left in the band. I don’t hear a peep about Gregg Rolie either whose voice gave a breath of fresh air to an otherwise singer-less band at the time. It took the passing of SP’s previous band bass-player to get him hooked up with Journey. Bottom line: Steve Perry was Journey. Neal will never have what Journey had in the 80’s as that was a different time and place. When SP releases a new album next year you will think you are hearing a new Journey song.

The Journey of today is nothing but a cover band for itself.

  53. obet v. said:

heyjoe…”journey is nothing but a cover band” well that’s your own opinion and of those still trap in the memories of the past 20 or 30 yrs. or so. we the newer listeners who has no idea of how they were in real time when they had steve perry do not share your memories and sentiments all you guys can say is steve made journey..well we the newer lsteners do not know that and don’t accept that as a fact. all we know is that we like journey because of thier music and this new guy singing for them. now i bet your memories if steve came out with a new album given the age and the grit he has gone through what makes you think he still retains the pipe he had 20 - 30 yrs ago. and stop comparing journey to other bands they have thier own business and idea of how things work out for them and for journey this one is working very well. i uderstand about the similarity of voice and approach ala steve perry voice but that’s just to justify and give honor those songs steve left behind when they were popular and so you guys can at least sppreciate that this new guy can carry that old journey
sound. but instead of appreciating it you mock and redicule the band member for gettng a new frontman as a replacement of steve perry. have you ever listen to the original songs of the revelation album? i did!! and i say this guy has his own identity and do not mimic the voice of steve perry. your making the situation a catch 22, damn if they do and damn if they don’t (having the voice sound like steve perry). i wonder if arnel happens to be the son of steve perry from an native american indian then you will say he is as good as his father or if one of your brothers or member of your family is taken by journey to be thier lead singer…makes me wonder if you will say the same thing about journey as a cover band!
hahahaha deep inside you know you will not and
will embrace journey as better than ever.

journey….WOW AND ELECTRIFYING!!! as soon as arnel came out and started singing he took the sold out venue of 15ks on thier feet from the begining till their encore. this guy is like a perpetual motion…he jumps, slides on his knees, runs, spins and sometimes throwing the mic stand in the air and catching it while he is singing and never missing a note or beat.
he took the crowd into dancing and waving their hands while shouting thier
delight to his performances and journey’s music. it was truly incerdible to see this man with less than a year with journey took this sold out venue
    to another level of showmanship.

i just could not believe to see and hear this 40 yr old guy sustaining that much energy for ther entire show and at the same time singing in high voice with robust and intensity. he undoubtedly influenced the other bands energy level too. what i saw was more than i i was expecting from him and the band..it was great and totally insane!

i just hope that some of you will have a chance to see them perform in concert and be with them in one place with journey, heart and cheap trick performing an unadulterated rock music for four hours!

    journey comes alive!!!!
