Calls to move a crossing labelled a danger to pedestrians in a Black Country town have been dismissed – but highways officers have agreed to install extra signage.
Traders had campaigned for the crossing at the junction of Stone Street and Tower Street, Dudley, to be moved, saying its location on a blind bend was dangerous. They fear its position could result in someone being injured or even killed. Their concerns were raised by Sergeant Simon Holloway of Dudley police when he met council officers.
But instead of moving the crossing outside the Fountain Arcade, the council said it will install measures to increase drivers’ awareness.
Spokeswoman Katherine Finney said: “The zebra crossing has been put in to provide a safe pedestrian route to link Stone Street Square through to the Fountain Arcade and the town centre.
“Following discussions with police we will be putting in additional markings and signage in Stone Street to highlight the approach to the crossing.”
Alan Caswell from the Arcade Toyshop in the Fountain Arcade is one of the traders who warned customers to tread carefully when stepping onto the crossing.
He said: “Common sense has not prevailed, this crossing is in the wrong place and it is an accident waiting to happen.
“I am not at all happy that the council has refused to move it. The fact I have seen schoolchildren crossing a few yards down the road instead of using it just shows people don’t think it’s safe.
“Already two cars have had a bump and I’m sure it’s the first of many.”
The council says it will monitor the situation as is procedure for all new facilities. Mr Caswell added: “I’m all in favour of road safety but this is a totally crazy crossing. It has caused me such concern I’ve found myself advising customers to take extra care.”
