Saville ready for crowning moment

steve-saville.jpegWolverhampton boxer Steve Saville is ready and waiting for the biggest fight of his life at the Civic Hall tonight.

The 31-year-old will face Baz Carey on home turf in his comeback fight, after over five years out of the ring.

If that was not pressure enough, the match will be televised on Sky Sports, bringing Saville into the homes of millions across the world.

Carey is no slouch either. He remains the only man to have ever taken Amir Khan to the distance and pushed Michael Gomez all the way recently.

For Saville, who fought 19 bouts with 15 wins before retiring, it could be his crowning moment.

He said: “I am over the moon. I cannot wait to get into the ring. I am more hungry and excited then I have ever been about any fight.”

When the match was made, Saville had no idea he would be fighting in front of a national audience.

The news of Sky involvement only came on Wednesday, when the Mick Hennessy-promoted televised show was switched from Coventry Skydome and merged with the PJ Rowson-promoted bill at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

Saville was elated when he heard the news.

He said: “I could not believe it. I was excited and maybe a bit nervous.

“Now I am convinced this is my time to shine.”

The local lad walked away from the sport after a points win over Keith Jones in December 2002 but, five years later, could not resist the burning urge to finally fulfil his full potential.

He said: “I did not want to become one of these blokes sitting in the pub in 20 years time wondering what could have been.

“I owed to myself to have one last shot. I have had a lot of setbacks in my time but I feel better than I have ever been.”

He will need to be at his best to plough through Coventry slugger Carey but Saville is ready to step up, in front of what is likely to be a big supporting crowd.

He said: “I am not scared of anyone. We are both trained fighters and it will come down to who performs on the night. There will be no airs and graces.”

Tickets can still be purchased for Steve’s big night, from the Wolverhampton Civic Hall Box Office on 0870 320 7000 or from 1st Team Promotions’ PJ Rowson on 07976 283 157.
