Pinches making an impact after switch

fishing.jpgA switch of clubs appears to have worked well for former Wolverhampton’s Goldthorn Social member Dave Pinches who wrapped up the Bilston Angling’s open with a 9-5-8 mixed bag.

Now wearing the organisers colours he drew a peg at the end of the tennis courts on the side of the Staffs Worcester canal at Tettenhall where he used squatt maggots to attract roach and perch to eight ounces.

The tackle shop’s owner John Hall was second from the third peg below the New Bridge where he took small roach, perch and skimmer bream on squats plus a few better sample on casters and all from the ‘boat track’. Mel Wood (Bilston) was third with 8-0-0.

Current top rod in the Wolverhampton area Paul Turner tucked another good victory under his collar with a 10-9-0 effort in the Midleisure Tackle’s latest open fixture.

Pegged along the Shropshire Union canal at Pendeford the Saturday match produced lots of fish.

Grouped with the Fox Match Tipton VDE squad he drew number 11 which rarely comes up trumps but he was soon in action hooking roach to six ounces on squats.

When bites slackened he switched to chopped worms to add a 1lb 8 oz bream plus a few smaller samples.

Second man Dave McCall (Shakespeare) at peg 23 used similar tactics but with red squats for roach plus the usual worm for a 2lb bream.

Brian Guy (Midleisure) was third with 6-12-12.

Ted Yearby took the honours in the Stirrup AC’s open event on the Birmingham Canal at Curdworth.

Rather than the expected double figure best haul, winner Yearby only needed 6-4-0 and that was almost double that of his nearest challenger.

The Dams & Lock team expert drew peg 78 on the strait section where he hooked a bream of 2lbs on a worm plus some very small roach all taken with squat maggots.

His team-mate Graham Massey at nearby peg 72 was second with 3-13-0, all very small roach also caught on squats.

Brierley Hill’s Steve Broome (Black Country Tackle) was third with 3-5-8 of small bream, perch and roach again hooked on squats

The bandstand and boathouse sides of Hatherton Lake again produced some impressive catch weights in the latest Walsall Arboretum open match.

Winner, with 28-0-0, was local lad Gary Beesley, who drew peg 27 at the back of the bandstand.

Commencing with sweetcorn feed and hookbait offered with a long pole  he was soon in action catching bream around the 2lb mark plus a few small roach on maggots.

Second-placed Steve Preece (Bloxwich) drew a peg by the boathouse where he used similar tactics for 16-0-0 of bream.

Gary Kendall (Darlaston) was third with 13-4-0 over Dave Gough (Walsall) 9-8-0, Jerry Lundy (Walsall) 5-12-0 and Ron Nicholls (Walsall) 4-9-0.

An open memorial competition for the late angler John Wright from Stafford attracted a large entry of 80 competitors to the Shropshire Union canal at Soudley and Park Heath.

Wolverhampton-based Fox Match Tipton team ace Paul Turner took the honours.

He weighed in 7-5-0 consisting of small roach plus a brace of 3lb chub all taken on casters the haul earned him £255 in prize money.

Another Wolverhampton rod, Dave Richards (Midleisure), was second with 5-2-12.

The next three prizes went to long distance traveller Morris German (Wyche Angling) 4-13-6; Neil Latham (Batley’s) 4-12-14 and Phil Johns (Sensas North West) 4-10-12.

Brierley Hill’s Dennis Sumner (Black Country Tackle) pulled off a good 15-13-8 victory in the latest Cornerstone A C’s open contest on the Birmingham Mainline canal at Small Heath.

Drawn at peg 72 he caught 15-13-8 of smallish  ‘skimmer’ bream using alternated casters and pinkie maggots.

Local lad Chris Taylor (Cornerstone)  was second from the next but one peg 74 where his 13-14-7 was virtually the same mix. Ade Shepherd (Trabucco VDE) was next with 13-5-2 over Pete Allwood (Long Eaton Federation) 9-7-6, Andy Careless (Fox Black Horse A C) 8-8-4 and Paul Murrin (Trabucco VDE) 8-4-4.

Eclipse club members dominated the Stoke City A A’s Latest open match on the Shropshire Union canal at Norbury.

Keith Hulland led the attack with an 8-12-4 bag of roach to 1lb taken with squat maggots from an end peg near the boat dock. Fred Cheetham was second with 7-12-8 from the opposite end where his favourite hempseed and bread baits accounted for 7-11-8, again all roach. Tony Keeling was next with 6-8-12.
