Wolves still keen on McLean

mclean.jpegWolves remain hopeful of signing Peterborough striker Aaron McLean as they prepare to submit a third bid of around £1.5m.

Posh director of football Barry Fry has confirmed Wolves have made a second bid but declared that they were “wasting their time”.

Yet the player is keen to move to the Championship after declaring: “I want to play as high as possible.”

Fry said: “Wolves have made two bids which were instantly disregarded.

“They were miles below what we would consider a proper fee for a player of Aaron’s goalscoring ratio.

“They have been very persistent in their attempts to sign Aaron but I did tell them last week they were wasting their time. We are not a selling club.”

Wolves still believe a deal can be struck – possibly by offering a player – and that they can re-unite McLean with his former Grays team-mate Michael Kightly.

McLean, 25, scored 33 goals last season to help Posh to promotion to League One and was also selected in the PFA’s League Two Team of the Year.

As Wolves look to secure McLean, they were on alert for a possible surprise call from Burnley, as the £4m transfer of Kyle Lafferty to Rangers remained in the balance.

The makeweight in the deal, Rangers midfielder Alan Gow, still has not agreed personal terms with Burnley, amid claims he is waiting for two years of his contract to be paid up by Ibrox.

Should Gow fail to get his severance pay, Burnley would return to the negotiating table, leaving the Clarets to demand more money than the £3m agreed, or open to the possibility of Wolves and Celtic bidding for Lafferty again.

1 Jamie, you have said “c’mon wolves get mclean and lafferty for wolves” and then you have not selected them in your team???? What’s the point????
My only concern is that mclean and SEB can’t play together because they are too similar.

bloody barry fry, what the hell does he know, fair enough McClean is a good player and has got a good goal scoring ratio but what bazza needs to realise that posh were playing at the lowest level of english league football and I wouldn’t pay no more than 2 million for a player who is not even proven at league 1 level

What is it with Mccarthy and strikers. Sort the central defence first and some creative players to actually give the ball to the strikers.

Since he arrived two years ago he has bought in
Bothroyd, Jemal Johnson, Craig Davies (loan), Keogh, Elliott, Eastwood, Kyle (loan), Stephen Ward, Vokes.

That’s 10 and he’s now bid for Maclean and Lafferty as well.

Most concerned about the players we are after. We do not need any more forwards. The problems last year were the midfield not being mobile enough and not scoring goals together with 2 slow central defenders.I am slowly coming to the opinion next season could be a disaster.

  13. Fan_Rich_Wolves said:

Defence & midfield needs sorting not up front!!! we need a playmaker who can get 11+ GOALS a season.

Why are we offering 1.5mill - why not eastwood if we are waiting to recoup the losses. may not wanna drop down a division but would rather play than rot in the reserves?? looks like blackburn are doing what we should have done 4 months ago!!

Our goals for ratio last season was poor. The chances were being made, and missed. We do need someone else to put the ball in the net.

As far as defenders go, we have bids in, apparently, for Tomy Elphick and Christophe Berra. In addition, Little and Jones are back from loan.

Midfield is an area that we need strengthening, unless Davies and Gobern are fit all season long. Davies would be the creative midfielder we need, and Gobern would provide cover for Kights and Jarvis.

As far as impatience goes, we all know that nothing usually happens transfer wise in June. The players are on their hols, and therefore the transfers start in July mainly. (The transfer window opens officially on 1 July.)

Was Lafferty bothered about us a couple of days ago when he thought Rangers were cut and dried and Burnley were trying to get more money from us.Forget him and Burnley and see who else wants him.

  18. DINGLE TIL 1 DIE said:

right i think we should all calm down just a little bit!!

we all agree that we need another defender or 2.
we could do with 1 more striker as we cant rely on seb and vokes is too young so will need a season to adjust (wateva MM says!) Keogh is a good player but he aint a striker guys! attacking midfielder yes.
now we need a creative midfielder pre an old ex prem guy who can hold the midfield as it seems to disappear when we are under pressure.
get Berra, Mclean and someone like Campo and we are laughing.

i would love 2 c mclean down molineux, he would aid SEB very well, hez good in the air despite his height nd is strong nd powerful. he may play similar to SEB, but they would b a gr8 partnership, with vokesy on the bench. but what about keogh???? oh dear

  25. Wanderers till I die said:

    I like it wbabomber.
We could sign them and loan themto you, seeing your having problems try to sign players.
    It’s just a thought.

Mclean looks like a right bruiser.. Don’t know much about him. Does anyone else think he would be a good buy?

Go get Ledley from Cardiff.. THat would be a result. I know we have tried before, but some times you have to keep trying to get what you want.

  27. SUPERSTARDJWOLVES said:

This turning out to be another Billy No Mates Sharp which turned out to be a fiasco!

McLean would be a great addition, Laffety no thanks. It is obvious to me that we didnt score enough goals so MM is right “for a change” to go for strikers who know where the net is. I think a change of formation next year. SEB, McLean and AK playing behind them both which would mean jarvis to the bench and a midfield 3 of Kites “if fit” Henry and Gleeson. Back line of Foley, Fanny, Berra, abd the big fella. with either Matt or wayne in goals. PLayers who will definately not get a look in will be Freddy = Sold JB = rubbish Ward = Loaned Little = Loaned Jones = Loaned Davies = Injury Gobern = Loaned Oli = Sold Elliott = sold&rubbish

i work with a derby fan. this edwards sounds just like olypyjama. can’t tackle, gets knocked off the ball, goes missing etc etc. why bdon’t we re-sign that lightweigt spurs player we let go, rohan rickets??? i forget. we need a snotta in the middle to put the fear of god into the opps. & yes, repeat, repeat since lescot went centrebacks with pace, youth & guile. or at least 1 & 3.

Ideally my starting 11 for the new season would be

    1.Henessey
    G Neville R Ferdinand Lescott A Cole

    Giggs Ballack Lampard Ronaldo

    Van Nielstelroy Rooney

subs ; Ward, Elliot, Potter, Elokobi, Murray

    What do you think lads/lassies????

if posh think they are a big club now, offer them freddy straight swap for mclean!! and see if freddy would go there? doubt it but you never know or offer the midfield dynamo that is potter plus £1.5m.
he for me perhaps alongside berra, were my top players i wanted at molineux this season
add to that vokes (thought he would go to villa/newcastle then be loaned out) id be well chuffed with the signings the club had made!!

  31. shatpankwolves said:

    29. nah rather have SEB than V.nistelrooy!!! and dont want cashley cole down wolves!!

This guy has a great scoring record… at the lower levels of football. While I would be the first to congratulate him on turning around his career after being released from Leyton Orient, I don’t believe this makes him worth £750K let alone £1.5million!
    Have we all gone crazy?
Apparently we are expected to sell strikers who has achieved at this level for peanuts while smaller clubs can hold us to ransom over the players we want to sign because they think we have “deep pockets”.
Mick has already spent a small fortune on strikers who have failed to live up to either his or the fans expectations. It is time we dug deep and paid real money for a proper, proven striker. Not some lad who just might have a bit of talent.

Why is any surprised about our transfer targets ?
The defence was not attended to two summers ago. It was not attended to last summer, nor in January. It is still not being attended to now.
But the worst non - signing was when we turned down the opportunity to sign the next England manager when Capello’s reign is over .. Paul Ince.

  35. optimistic wolf said:

29.Giggs is too old now and not keen on Ballack replace with Kightly and Gera(from FULHAM).

Peterborough NOT a selling club ha-ha - who’s their chairman? Barry Fry has always been consistent with one thing - the garbage that comes out of his mouth!

  37. Waggies Left Peg said:

No,no,no Tonimischi (number 29) a better bet would be
    Phil Parkes
    Geoff Palmer Derek Parkin
    Frank Munro John McAlle
Willie Carr Mike Bailey Ken Hibbitt
Derek Dougan John Richards Dave Wagstaffe
    Subs-Gary Pearce,Derek Jefferson,Steve Daley,
    Jim McCalliog,Bobby Gould,

Now thats what I call a team and not a single irishman in sight.
