Big boost for Lidl store scheme

wd2870735-lidl-store-in-fi.jpgA new Lidl supermarket could soon be built in an upmarket Wolverhampton suburb despite a fierce battle by residents.

The plan is for the budget store to be created on the site of the former Castlecroft Garage in Finchfield.

It has been recommended for approval by city planning officers.

If councillors agree it could mark the end of a four-year fight by the German retailer to build a supermarket and car park at the prime spot.

The news is set to devastate the many protesters, who have already managed to see off bids by Waitrose and Marks & Spencer to set up stores on the vacant site in leafy Finchfield Hill.

Plans for a housing development also fizzled out due to stiff opposition from locals.

Lidl bought the site in 2004 but it was not until the beginning of last year that its plans were unveiled.

The first application to transform the site with a discount store was rejected due to poor architectural design.

Revived plans have been recommended for approval when the city planning committee meets on Tuesday.

You will all be thankful when you have hardly any money to spend on food because of the cost of living.

A Waitrose and Marks & Sparks seen off plus a housing development, what did residents think was going to happen to large tracts of land in this day and age, left as an open space? They should have gone with one of the others

    3. Fanny do you live in a cardboard box?????

    Retrospect is a marvellous thing!!!!

Finchfield shops will suffer as a result of ANY shopping development. Whos going to look after and manage the shops when they are all empty????
How are the HGVs that cant get round Finchfield islands going to access the site…..by helicopter????

I agree something should be done with the site……but it should be a solution for everybody…….not just LIDL.

Hi Stubbz, Finchfield shops will benefit from having Lidl - at least you will be able to park!

NO WAY! the reds at the council must be laughing their socks off, bet they’ve been waiting to ruin that area for ages. Now the local’s will move to south stafs and pay them their council tax.

stubbz get off your soap box, people in Finchfield are too up themselves, think of all the low income families and oap’s who would welcome a value shop and the other shops will benefit from the influx of people who arrive to take advantage of the weekly bargains Lidl offer.
The two schools cause more parking problems than Lidl’s ever will.
