Quad bike hit officer on track

A patrolling policeman on a pedal cycle was sent flying by a quad bike speeding through a Dudley beauty spot at 25mph.

The machine driven by 22-year-old Richard Edwards ploughed into PC Simon Wilmot as he tried to halt it on a narrow footpath at Pensnett Nature Reserve, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told yesterday.

Edwards was given a two-year community order under supervision with a six month night time curfew.

He was also banned from driving for two years and ordered to pay the injured officer £300 compensation

The policeman injured his hand and knee and was off duty for a week following the incident.

Edwards from Chapel Street, Brierley Hill was arrested immediately after the crash in April last year and admitted dangerous driving on the grounds that he had not intended to knock down the officer.
