A new jail housing 1,500 criminals is set to be built in a Staffordshire village. The Ministry of Justice wants to build a large new prison in Featherstone.
If given the go-ahead it would nearly double the prison population in Featherstone, near Wolverhampton, which already is home to jails for adults and youths.
The existing adult jail already holds more than 600 inmates and is next to Brinsford Young Offenders Institution, which holds nearly 500.
A planning application for the new prison is expected to be lodged within weeks.Ministry of Justice spokeswoman Katherine Pateman said: “We are planning to build a new prison at Featherstone. This will be built by the public sector but no decision has yet been made as to whether this will be public or private sector operated.”
Featherstone councillor Bob Cope said: “The plans would see a new stand-alone prison created next to the current one which would house 1,500 inmates.
“As far as I am aware the prisoners would be a medium risk like they are currently.
“I am just very concerned that there are so many planned developments and that if they all go ahead they will back right on to each other.”
