Flats to be built in £38m revamp

More than 100 flats and two day care centres are to be built in Walsall as part of £38 million overhaul of care for the elderly.

Housing 21 took control of council-run OAPs homes in February this year.

It has now unveiled the first phase of its multi-million pound proposals to build blocks of flats for the elderly.

Plans have been submitted to demolish the outdated Delves Resource Centre and its 34 residential units and replace them with 53 new flats, a new day care centre and parking.

Another application will see 60 new flats and a day care centre at Short Heath House, Sandbeds Road, Willenhall, which previously only offered 34 flats.

Ian Lucy, spokeswoman for Housing 21, said: “The idea of extra care is that it gives elderly people the independence of their own flat, their own front door key, but also the security of 24-hour care and services like hairdressers’ and whatever else they need on their doorstep.” At the former Delves Resource Centres site there will be 53 flats. At Short Heath House there will be 45 rental units and 15 shared ownership homes made up of one and two-beds.
