End for Mulgrew in sight

cmulgrew.jpgSwindon are preparing a £125,000 bid to end defender Charlie Mulgrew’s Wolves nightmare.

Robins boss Maurice Malpas is set to offer six figures for the former Celtic left-back, with the offer believed to include various appearance-related add-ons.

Manager Mick McCarthy will surely be tempted by the chance to cash in on a player who played the last of his six League games for the club in November 2006.

He is currently the fourth choice left-back behind George Elokobi, Michael Gray and Daniel Jones.

Southend, where Mulgrew spent three months on loan last season, also want him but boss Steve Tilson could not match Wolves’ asking price.

Malpas is a big fan of the left-back, who he managed in the Scotland U21 squad, with Mulgrew also keen on the switch.

Malpas said: “I am speaking to a Championship club about a full-back just now.

“We are at the stage where we have to table a concrete offer to see if they will accept it.

“There is money there to wheel and deal a little bit and I feel this player is the right one for us.”

Yet the Swindon boss is likely to have to wait until the end of the week to find out whether he has been successful, when McCarthy returns from a short break.

Mulgrew’s departure won’t be a surprise to anyone after his failure to break through at Molineux.

A makeweight in the transfer that took Lee Naylor to Celtic in August 2006, the 6ft 3ins defender has made just five Championship starts under McCarthy.

Mulgrew however impressed at Roots Hall, where he made 18 appearances and helped the club to the League One play-off semi-finals, where they lost to eventual winners Doncaster.

Let’s look to move Mulgrew on and perhaps throw Collins in for free, whenever he is near the ball in our box i am as nervous as a turkey at Christmas. We do however seriously need to bolster our backline, having watched some of the Euros how about making a cheeky bid to Steua Bucharest for Dorin Goian he has impressed me, any thoughts?

A player who has probably been a little unlucky but MM has his favourites. We need to trim the squad down and make way for new signings.
I hope that we are not going to be loaning certain youngsters out ie Lee Collins, Little, Gleeson as they should be an integral part of our first team squad!

Quite disappointed that Mulgrew never made it, coming through the youth teams at Celtic he always looked to have something about him. Has an excellent left foot, shame he hasn’t been able to add the rest to his game so far! He looked to be playing well in the first leg of the play off semi when i watched it too!

Why do people like you always say that they didn’t get a chance. If they all got a real chance have you seen how many of them there are in our squad?! Eastwood, Bothroyd, kids etc etc. What do you think goes on in training and why do you think no-one else of a higher status wants them?!!!!!! Basically apart from the odd one they aren’t good enough to move us to a higher level. Completely normal in competitive sport that you move people on.

Saw Mulgrew a few times for Southend last season and he impressed at that level, surprised he wont be going there permanently this summer but if we can get £125K off Swindon for him then that’s some pretty good business cuz he’s got no chance under McCarthy

Catch on to the idea. Ignore this Terry. Like all attention seekers he will then go away. Don’t play his games. He has delusions of adequacy. (The E & S will stop this one again, like yesterday. They WANT idiots like him on here, as he gets them attention. He may even be a fictitious “person” dreamed up by one of their employees.)
