Walsall have appointed former Lincoln boss John Schofield as Jimmy Mullen’s new right-hand man as the Saddlers gear up for next season.
The 43-year-old will join the Saddlers as first team coach on July 1 – nine months after leaving Sincil Bank.
He said: “I am really looking forward to taking up the position.
“I have experience of working with both senior and young professionals and am looking forward to working alongside manager Jimmy Mullen.
“After visiting the Banks’s Stadium last week and having a tour of the club’s new training ground, you can see that this football club is geared up for success.
“The season that Lincoln got into the League Two play-offs, Walsall were promoted as champions and they enjoyed a solid season at League One level last time around.
“I am looking forward to playing my part in the ongoing progression of the football club.”
Former midfielder Schofield made more than 500 appearances as a player for Lincoln, Doncaster, Mansfield and Hull before hanging up his boots in 1999 and turning his attentions to coaching.
He was appointed youth team manager at Lincoln and stayed in the job for seven years, before being made head coach at Sincil Bank under director of football John Deehan in 2006.
He helped the Red Imps reach the League Two play-offs in 2007 before being appointed manager but he left last October, ending last season on the coaching staff at Scunthorpe.
Mullen said: “I am delighted to have John on board. He is a young guy with a wealth of experience.
“He has experience of youth development and has also held a number of coaching and managerial positions. He is a welcome addition to the backroom staff.”
Barnsley-born Schofield has taken up the role formerly occupied by Mullen, before he was promoted to the manager’s job to replace Richard Money.
