Regarding the letter from Mr T N Cartwright concerning caravans, he raises some good points.
However, I don’t think imposing a road tax on them is the way forward as vehicle owners pay enough as it is in road tax and the ever increasing cost of fuel.
Also, where do you stop in taxing road users? Do you put a tax on push bikes or, if not already, invalid scooters?
I would be more inclined to fine owners of caravans and other large vehicles who park up on driveways, which as Mr Cartwright says is a blight on the landscape and spoils people’s view.
There is another annoyance which also needs to be addressed, with any money raised from penalties helping to reduce fuel costs. This is car owners who park part or all of the vehicle on the pavement, causing problems for pedestrians who sometimes have to walk in the road, as well as mothers with prams and invalid scooters. These car owners who park on pavements also have no shame, or consideration for us pedestrians and the disabled.
Caravan owners have every right to use the road, as annoying as they are, and as most caravans need to be towed by a car so have every right to be covered by the road tax that car owners pay. If they are taxed, as Mr Cartwright suggests, the government of the day may not plough the proceeds back into making fuelling cheaper anyway.
If I am correct, road tax was brought in to help maintain roads.As there seems to be more vehicles on the roads these days, we should have the best road system in the world, but road tax seems to be spent in other areas of the economy rather than roads.

Sorry, how exactly is a caravan parked up on a driveway somehow spoiling the view?
Last I looked, what I park in my driveway is my business. People aren’t required to look at my driveway. If I park a car, a van, a skip or a caravan on my driveway surely its not giving other people an unavoidable eyesore.
It could be said that if people want a view then there shouldn’t be any houses in the way either but I doubt we’d go that far eh?

Some people are not allowed to park caravans or vans on their own drives due to restrications in their deeds
WHO, ALL OF A SUDDEN, HAS MADE IT O.K. TO PARK ON GRASS VERGES? IN KINGSWINFORD THEY ARE USED AS CAR PARKS AND IN PENSNETT THEY HAVE BEEN TURNED INTO MUD BATHS! AM I THE ONLY PERSON THAT FINDS THIS ANNOYING?

I think you are missing the point that Mr Parsons is raising. I think he refers to the caravans and large vans that inconsiderate owners park admittedly on their own drives but right by the side of their neighbours front window blocking light and giving a wonderful view of the side of the caravan or worst still a sign written commercial vehicle. Housing estates are meant to be residential not parking facilities for caravans and commercial vehicles.
Another point to ponder how neighbourly is it to start up a noisy commercial vehicle at 3
O’clock in the morning because the driver has to be at “the docks” or somewhere equally far flung destination before most people are up. I’m alright Jack seems to be the message from the people who have commented thus far.
I fully agree about the issues of people parking on the pavement and grass verges. Do what I do and compalin to the local police by email. If they don’t reply, keep doing it until they get fed up and actually do something. Nothing worse than inconsiderate residents parking their cars on the poavement so pedestrians have to walk in the road!
