Mullen set to wait for targets

wd2813244jimmy-1-nb-23.jpgWalsall manager Jimmy Mullen today called for patience from Saddlers fans as they await his first signings of the summer.

The Saddlers are believed to be closing in on several new faces as they look to rebuild following an end-of-season clearout in May.

But Mullen today warned that he may have to play a waiting game to land the players he wants.

“Bringing in players is an ongoing process but we have to remember that players have a lot of choices at this time of the year,” said Mullen. “We are not the only club looking for players at this stage.

“In fact 99 per cent of clubs in the country are all looking and lots of us are looking at and talking to the same players.

“A lot of players are away on holiday at the moment and the ones that aren’t often don’t want to commit until they’ve waited to find out all of their options.

“We have to contend with all of that, as do all the other clubs in the market. We will carry on working hard but we have to be patient.”

Mullen confirmed yesterday that out-of-contract Bournemouth centre-back Josh Gowling is among the players to have been spoken to over a move.

The 23-year-old former Albion trainee has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Scott Dann.

But Mullen today dismissed another persistent rumour linking former Saddlers utility man Craig Pead with a return to The Banks’s Stadium. Pead, who spent more than two years at the club, is keen to return to the Midlands.

I think the delay is that the player we are looking at don’t want to play for £5 a week that we are offering, Walsall are waiting to pick up the players nobody else wants.

If the target was that good they’d be offered a good wage and have signed, obviously the calibre isn’t that brilliant so they can wait until no-one wants them or they are decent and know walsall will offer too little and go elsewhere!

Hold on… didn’t Ayatolla Bonser tell us last week that we were due to sign some players within the next week?

Oh Jeff, looks like you’ve been telling porkies again. Oh well, at least we’ve got the exciting strike force of Troy Deeney and Alex Nicholls.

Oh and hold on…if a player doesn’t want to play for the club, whats the point of having them at the club? Isn’t that your motto Jeffery?

So if Gowling doesn’t come onboard at the first offer, do we just give up and go and cry in the corner?

Oh, and lets not forget we need probably 9 players just to have a squad on the first day of the season.

I genuinely fear for the future of Walsall FC. We are almost into July, the friendlies will soon be upon us and we, at the moment have got the weakest squad of players that we have had for years. In fact not one of the players that were released some weeks ago, have been replaced. Plus of course, we have also lost the loan players that we had. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. League 2 beckons.
