Albion chairman Jeremy Peace today hailed manager Tony Mowbray’s transformation of the club’s recruitment system.
Peace paid tribute to his title-winning manager for widening the net in the hunt for new players and providing the Baggies board with lists of alternative signings.
And the chairman said long-term planning for transfers was better than ever at The Hawthorns.
“This transfer window is going to involve preparation for the next window and the one after that,” said Peace.
“There are players already on the list who we are just watching for next summer. It’s the first time I have ever had that in my time as chairman.
“We have to say ‘what are the alternatives out there?’ If you’ve got alternatives in every position then you have got bargaining strength.
“I am noticing now we’re getting stronger in bringing players in because we do have alternatives, whereas before that wasn’t the case.
“That meant that the price and the salary for the one we wanted could only go one way. Now we do have alternatives, which can put us in a stronger position and we can have a proper debate over things.
“We talk to Tony on the football side about the usefulness of a player to him and we marry that up with what we’re prepared to offer as a club. “There are some interesting alternatives on the list now and that is good.
“We’ve got one or two enquiries in but he reality sometimes dawns and you can’t get certain people.”
Albion stepped up their pursuit of new faces this week after a board meeting to finalise their target list and Irishman Paddy McCourt could be the first to arrive next week. But Peace is braced for a waiting game in the hunt for bigger name recruits.
“McCourt is the closest one but the major strategic ones will, I think, start coming in once they are back for pre-season in early July,” said the chairman.
“That’s when we will start to filter them in.”
Meanwhile, Albion today dismissed claims the club were on the verge of signing Crewe’s Nicky Maynard. The player has been watched by the Baggies in the past is not on manager Tony Mowbray’s list of targets for this summer.

Yes someone said they had seen your manager watching Sunday league football..
You are a joke bozzzzzzzzzz
Premier league laughing stock again…
When have we been a laughing stock moron? Idiot.
what are you mid table VANILLA boys on about?
your the ones that can’t get signings, little club with NO AMBITION.
GET MORE INTEREST IN SELLING ICE CREAMS!
1 Villa Girls more like.
Just narked are we because your best player wants a move to a bigger club.
We’ll have to wait and see who’ll be the laughing stock Villa Boys. Tony Mowbray’s a fabulous manager wouldn’t swap him for your so called messiah.
No1.
So we’ve finally left the dingle posters
behind, now got we’ve you vile’ assh***s to
look forward to, bring it on!
yes we do have a player worth 20 mllion -do you?
yes villa are a much bigger club than albion with a massive average gate.in fact then dingles are a bigger better supported club than you with more tradition.
yes most of us really dont care about birminghams 3rd team-only people in shell suits wearing shoes from sandwell.narked?not us villa boys and girls!!!only you bennie drones.keep singing hymns and dressing up thats what youre all about.
We should start a new game on here. Guess the age of the poster, (either real or intellectual).
No.7 er, real: 20 years. Intellectual: 7 years
No.1 er, I give up! The Wulfies have a good proportion of sensible posters and just a few morons. As yet Villa score is all morons. Now I know some great Villa supporters, so come on lads, balance the books. Your image is being tarnished by these t*ts.
Mowbray and Peace are a great team. I have every confidence in them. MON at Villa is also a good manager, pity some of their fans have got no class.
The fact is Villa boys and girls there are only 4 proper football clubs in this country and you ain’t nor never will be one of them. Barry seems to agree with me too. Keep dreamin while you’re serving Big Macs.
Isn’t it fantastic that the proper Midlands derby is back on again this season, and long may it continue! Villa/Blues and Albion/Wolves were only ever friendlies that sometimes got out of hand when the lunatic fringe couldn’t control themselves. But this season, well….. two proper football teams. Obviously the Villa will be favourites home and away and reading some of their fans comments on here it seems you’ve already got the six points, no point in turning up then…. but I’d be very, very careful about gobbing off too much you little villans. Good club, strong team, O’Neil decent manager, but those of you who are regular visitors to this site should now have some understanding of THE MOWBRAY WAY, and those of you who are not - WATCH OUT! This little pearl of wisdom is given comletely free of charge and comes following the departure of Zoltan Gera, who only left because he realised that at best he would only have been a squad player (just like he was at the start of last season), and before we have actually signed anybody……… Oh of course…. yes….. I forgot…..LUKE MOORE.
If I were you I’d be afraid, very afraid.
dont be fooled this villa comments are wolves fans in disguise check out villa stories no villa fans come on here wolves fans have realised that we dont like talking to clubs in lower divisions
Re 7 Not for long where will your 20 mill (overly exxxxxxagerated) player be the first day of the season LIVERPOOL you muppet he has asked for a transfer talk about loyalty. . . .think its 20mill peanuts liverpool want to pay heard O’Nile said they could have him but not for that much think he has reduced the price look on ebay bidding starts at £5 any takers. . . .
7-so go and enjoy playing in the ToTo-lly useless cup without your captain, and spend another season achieving nothing, going nowhere.By the way, where were all the witton whingers hiding before a yankee sugar daddy bought the club out of pity?
not all about ego tho is it! u have one player worth about 10 mil at the most and he wants to leave what does that tell you?
BOING BOING BAGGIES!!!!!!!!!!
Supervillian, he might be worth 20 million but he won’t be staying much longer and you certainly won’t be spending 20 million on anyone. You’re an also ran just like WBA and Wolves.
we should sign bullard he is would be mint 4 a right free kick and he will take gera place what hell was gera thick goin 2 fulham u no is not goin get that mean games he shoulod stayed at the albion
12 months ago, we had the dingles sniping at us, saying how we would not accomplish anything last season and how they were gonna do the double over us etc etc. Well probably not that polite. But however, what happened . We were crowned Champions and them losers could not even make the playoffs. So Villa boys be afraid be very afraid and shut your little mouths.
your such a bigger club that your so called 20 million pound player wants to move. get back in your pram heres your dum dum ahhhhhhh. im off to find miss diane
To be fair i have to agree with everything supervillian has said.
I think even you brain washed baggies have to agree too.
You Aston Villa fans make me sick, you moan about
Doug Ellis not bringing players in,then you wax
lyrical about your YANK! chairman who is a
billionare, and has not spent a penny on players.
JUST FACE IT VILLA FANS,YOU ARE A BUNCH OF
GLORY HUNTERS WHO UNDERSTAND NOTHING ABOUT
FOOTBALL.
YOUR CHAIRMAN IS TIGHT,

AND YOUR GROUND IS A DUMP!
This summer you will find out that there is
only one decent football team in the midlands,

Ken Hawthorn…no you haven’t left the dingle posters behind. We’re far more particular about which blog we join in. Talkin’ of blogs my friend…haven’t seen your name very prominently on these pages. You just one of the hangers on that’s just jumped on the bandwagon ? You just one of those ‘Premiership’ fans ?
