Children at a Walsall school swapped their textbooks for swords and shields during a fun day.

Youngsters at Hydesville Tower dressed as Vikings during yesterday’s event.

They were given an insight into life in the past by making rope, flour and enjoying a number of themed games.

The Time Zone team, which helps re-enact historic moments, were also invited to show the Year Three pupils how things were different.

A total of 28 pupils took part in the fun, including two teachers, to coincide with an on-going school project about the Viking period.

To make the day realistic, the seven and eight-year-old pupils were auctioned off, just as youngsters were over 1,000 years ago.

Staff at the school said the event had proved a real success.

Teacher Louise Morgan said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed such an exciting visit which brought the Vikings era to life.”
