Gordon Brown has urged motorists not to panic-buy petrol and diesel ahead of a planned strike by tanker drivers delivering fuel for Shell on Friday.
A spokesperson for the Prime Minister said contingency plans were in place to minimise disruption.
Even so, the government said that some petrol stations could run out of fuel.
Hundreds of members of the Unite Union are due to walk out on Friday morning in a dispute over pay.
The drivers work for Hoyer UK and Suckling Transport, haulage firms employed by Shell to deliver fuel to its forecourts across the UK.
The prime minister’s spokesperson said: “We believe that this strike is unnecessary and we would want to ensure that nothing was done that inconvenienced the public.
“But the most responsible thing the public can do is to continue to buy as normal.”

LAUGH OUT LOUD!
Perhaps the BBC can make another programe like this but call it “Browns Army” because they are all incompetent jokers.
Panic buying will increase demand and therefore drive the price up.
Obviously not what the government wants !!!!!!
Quick! Panic buy! It’s so cheap!
‘Don’t panic buy’! I panic anyway when I buy the stuff! Panic that how the hell can I afford it!
Panic buy now..Rush out run as fast as you can.Note “run” as we cant afford the damn petrol to drive our cars!
What a muppet Gordon Brown is!
He should now that the great British public do not listen to a word he says plus the fact that they love a queue!!
Can’t write anything else as I have to rush out to fill my car!!!
get it now while you can as come the weekend there will be none left panic panic panic everyone should panic no fuel how will we all get around. what plans has this idiot got to keep fuel moving?
Gordon’s urging motorists not to panic and we should continue to buy fuel “as normal”.
Yeah, he’s bound to say that, isn’t he!
Why panic?
Just look at it as an scheduled holiday.
No fuel, no car, cant get to work or do your day job,?
Stay home and enjoy the time off, help bring britain to its knees.
Wait for it guys, petrol is so expensive people cant afford to buy it, in fact figures suggest demand for petrol in Britain has slumped by as much as 20 per cent over the past year.
So Gordon Browns income from fuel tax has dropped by 20% !!!!!! so how is he going to continue to finance his spending commitments?????????? An increase in fuel duty??????????
Jim of Bearwood
Gordon has his own fuel line..so he isnt bothered what “his” people need.He is a greedy spiteful man who thinks he is over seeing the british people…Time that man took himself in a cupboard and had a word with himself…NO ONE LIKES YOU MATE!!
Here in Saudi Arabia the cost of petrol has hardly risen a penny or two in the ten years I have been here. It’s 17 pence per litre here. If Saudi can keep the country going at that price you can see how much Brown’s cronies are ripping the British driver off by adding an obsene amount of tax to the price.
lets hope the spineless nu labour government get a good bloody nose from this if everyone said sod it don’t buy fuel for the remander of the strike this corrupt lot in parliment might just look up and listen but don’t hold ya breath.
