Ellis Parkes was undergoing surgery today following the attack near his house in Ashbourne Road, Heath Town last night.

The dog, believed to be a Japanese Akita, mauled the youngster at around 7.20pm in front of shocked onlookers. He suffered puncture wounds to his chest, a severe injury to his arm and bites to his stomach area and was rushed by ambulance to New Cross Hospital.

He is since understood to have been transferred to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Ellis’s mother Tracey told the Express & Star today her son was in a stable condition. “He has to have an operation today,” she said.

“He’s doing OK though, he’s a fighter.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: “On arrival there was no sign of the dog but there was a large crowd gathering.

“The crew quickly got the boy on to the ambulance and started dressing his wounds. They said that the youngster was remarkably calm and very brave.”

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Catherine Preece said officers were investigating.
