Fantastic plastic is big business

Years of expertise have helped Teknor Apex blossom into an international business.

The Oldbury plastics firm produces an endless list of items for customers as far afield as Europe, Asia and America.

Its range of products includes everything from car parts to the coated underwires in bras. Gary Cashmore, production manager at the Tat Bank Road plant, said his dedicated 52-strong workforce was the key to the firm’s success. And 27 members of staff have recently enjoyed success in NVQs.

They have passed their NVQ Level 2 in engineering methods and manufacturing.

Mr Cashmore, who has worked for the business for 16 years, said: “I could not be prouder of the plant staff. They decided to take their NVQs after we met with Train to Gain.

“Most of them have been doing this for years so it’s great to see them get an official pat on the back for their work. Everyone is delighted for them.”

Aside from its work as a compounder of advanced polymer materials, the firm also has its own colourant department.

Mr Cashmore said staff prided themselves on technical innovation, quality products and customer service.

The factory, which also makes moulds, items for the building trade and electric products, has its own laboratory on site to carry out research.

It started life as British Industrial Plastics but was later bought out and changed its name to Chem Polyner.

American firm Teknor Apex acquired the business six years ago.

Mr Cashmore, aged 46, said: “We started off small- scale but have just grown and grown over time into an international company.

“High standards are at the heart of what we do. I could not ask for a better team, everyone from the shop floor to sales, dispatch and the engineers.”

He added the future was looking bright for the firm, which is planning to branch out into other international markets.”
