Wolves chase golden oldies

wolvesbadge.jpg

Wolves want to roll back the clock and find old hands to reproduce the famous Ince-Irwin partnership which led the club to the Premier League five years ago.

Chief executive Jez Moxey confirmed today that the search for a couple of battle-hardened campaigners is dovetailing, with the continued recruitment of the 25-and-under brigade.

The influence of former Premier stars Paul Ince and Denis Irwin was paramount as Wolves recovered from their worst nightmare – losing promotion to Albion in 2002 – to reach the top flight a year later.

At a time when the focus at Molineux is to build a team with a five or six-year life span, Moxey acknowledged that Wolves would relish the chance to replicate that input for the 2008-09 campaign.

Wolves were keen to enter the bidding for 32-year-old Lee Carsley when he was released by Everton a fortnight ago, but could not match the wages on offer from Birmingham City. Carsley fits the bill to add to the “young and hungry” culture being encouraged at Molineux.

Moxey said: “The main focus is still on getting together the nucleus of a team which will take us into the Premiership and last for five or six years.

“But we were very fortunate a while back to bring in players of the stature of Paul Ince and Denis Irwin and it would be perfect if we could come up with something like that again.

“The trouble is, players of that quality, dedication and personality don’t come along too often. But we are looking hard.”

After signing Sam Vokes from Bournemouth, Wolves are finding it more difficult with other known targets. The Kyle Lafferty deal is log-jammed, while the move for Christophe Berra was always likely to be complicated by the notoriously awkward Hearts ownership.

Their interest in Peterborough striker Aaron McLean and Derby’s left-sided central midfielder David Jones has also yet to result in anything concrete.

I think Kevin Phillips would do a job.

Who fits the Paul Ince ageing leader mould though? Moxey is right there are not many around.

What’s this ? Positive news coming out of the Mol spin machine ? There must be some ‘older’ prem players warming the benches or sitting in the stadiums that would love the chance to play regular 1st team football and who have the quality as well. About time something positive was said about re-building the defence. I know there’s been Christophe Berra and that guy from Oldham talked about but I think we do need some experience to guide the ‘young & hungry’

This sounds like a desperate attempt to protect our current squad from the failings of last season…McCarthy said our team is the best in the League recently, if that were so then we wouldn’t need to be looking at has beens. Stick with Michael Gray, Plenty of experience, Works as hard as anyone on the pitch, not afraid to stick a boot in and occasionally scores a good goal…enough said!

    Good article.
It will be the same as always with the transfers though, nothing will really happen until the end of July/start of the new season.

Stick with the youth policy unless a real golden oldie comes along. Remember what Alan Hanson said, “you’ll never win anything with kids” and we all know how that worked out. Give the young, hungry players a go!

About Time! Some common sense at last!

Only thing is that we have this “wage budget” that means that other clubs can sign the likes of Carsley and we cant? Whats the difference between paying a transfer fee and paying someone more because they add better quality to the team?, even if its for ONE season?

Is the reason that “it will cause unrest in the current squad?” or is the prize of Premiership football out of reach due to false economies dressed up as “company policy”?

The E&S supporters certainly know how to stir it up with headlines like this. You wait for the deluge of Wolves moaners and Albion snipers - there again they can say nothing, as there team is full of them.
I agree in principal with this ethos but in what positions? The only obvious 2 that I can see is a central midfielder and centre forward. We need younger players elsewhere.
I don’t know the ins and outs but would say if you put £2 million down for Berra and £750 k for Jones, they will be ours.
Here is some other news that puts egg on General Moxey’s face. Miller will be going back to Rangers for £2 million!

I tried to think of all the players who could fit the bill and there are not many. I know not many will agree with me but in defence I would have thought Breen would fit that bill. I still think he would give us solidity, albeit at a slowish pace, but I’ve always thought he would command respect from the younger players with his mature attitude.

  19. Bangkok Wolf said:

Phillips would have been useful but surely we have enough up front now. What about Gravesen in midfield or someone like Lauren in defence. Old enough and with experience if we must go the old heads route again.

  20. Grumpy Ole Man said:

The list of Paul Ince admirers is growing with Blackburn the latest to join the fan club. Rumours still persist the assistant at Man. U. will be leaving and that Fergie wants Ince.
I fear any chance we had disappeared in December when we did not make the move we should have.

On the player front, if our management buys any Derby player the lot of them should be admitted to Penn Manor Hospital immediately with no prospect of release.

The young and hungry players have had a go in the last 2 seasons and failed to get us up,

At the start of the 06/07 season they were the right players, now some of them need to go and we need to kick on with some real quality.

Young and Hungry is just spin, we need quality players that are able to do a job now, despite age.

A good squad (as TM will tell you) is all about balance - and a balance between young and old players can work really well - look at us with Miller and Phillips up front… but just having older players is no guarantee of success - look at Breen and Craddock.

Its unlikey that you will find another Paul Ince or Dennis Irwin - those type of players are VERY hard to find.

Whats more important is getting the very best out of the players you do have - another TM strength, and possibly the area where mick failed last season..(IMO)

I think you will need to find a new leader on the pitch to replace Breen - that may mean an old “war horse” coming in.

Hyppia or maybe evn Giggs. I imagine both have a season in them at Championship level, but will struggle to get into their current first teams in the coming season.

The “battle hardened campaigners” may only be needed for a season in order to influence the “young and hungry” in positive ways, and pass on the necessary experience. They could help us to get there, but only be bit part players when we get up. Look at what Barmby and Dean Windass did for Hull City last season. You can’t see them playing a lot next season in the Prem, though.

I agree that we need an Ince-type or indeed, an Alex Rae-type. Greening ran the show for the Albion at Molineux - why? ‘Cos nobody put a bloody tackle in on him, that’s why. Carsley could have done that job for us and I agree, Savage could do a job for a year - pay him what he wants. Bolton managed to eventually get a foothold in the prem by giving one-year contracts to foreign mecenaries - it worked for them, because if they got relegated, there would be nobody on expensive long-term contracts. Give Savage a lucrative one-year deal & see if it comes off…….

  40. john said:

i have read the comments above, wolves are not abandoning the youth policy. They have realised that they need one or two experienced heads in amongst them. the problem is we could pay the likes of Ince, Irwin premiership wages and dont want to do that now. If they really want quality they will have to smash the wage structure and pay up

The last thing Giggs said was “I couldn’t think of playing for another club”. What an example of loyalty to some of our lot who sign 4 year contracts, play a season and then aren’t happy at our club. The work must begin in earnest this year to find the right blend of youth and experience who want to battle for the club as well as themselves. We can’t allow ourselves to be a feeder club for the premiership and at some point we might have to pay the rate for a bit of class. The most important thing is for harmony between Mick and the players so everyone is going in the same direction - up!

    Give me strength!

First we want all young and hungry, then they have to have 4 years experience in the Championship and now they have to be battle hardened ex-Premiership players!!

A manager needs a combination of all of the above….the secret is that whatever age and experience, they have the necessary quality and attitude.

If football club management was about 2 from this category and 3 from another etc then we could all do it!

A manager’s job is to get the blend right. Patently, it wasn’t “right enough” last season and the blend needs changing. Just stop these ridiculous generalities and build a team!

Of course the midfield needs a leader in the Ince-mould..we can all see that! But it could either be a young and hungry player, an experienced Championship player or a battle-hardened Premiership pro.

MM managing to a formula rather than being flexible seems to be one of his downsides and, as others have said, could lead to yet another frustrating transfer month!

Great idea to bring golden oldies back. My next door neighbour is Terry Wharton,he played for Wolves and England.Moxley do you want me to give him a knock because he could sure do with the pay rise he was on fifteen pounds a week and my dad said he was a brilliant player in his time.He maybe a bit slower but so is the Wolves team anyway.

The failure to acquire Paul Ince stands as yet another condemnation of the pathetic management of this club in the last 20+ years.

He was one of us! And now we have no chance of ever getting him back again. How inept and stupid can our management team get?

Paul Ince will be going on to major Premiership and championship League glories. We lost him, when he was one of us!

Only Wolves with Moxey as the CEO could be this dysfunctional!

    MOXET OUT NOW!!!

high wages but worth a gamble (1yr or 2 yr) and a bonus for promotion for :

    Gravesen (YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!)
    Okocha (bench - match turner)
    Davenport (providing he recovers)
    —-
Tugay = intesting shout - never thought of him
    —-
    Murphy - still premiership
we could have had him for £500k years ago (taylor i think)
    —-
Stelios (reminds me of Ketsbaia - hit-n-miss)
Campo (just a bit too old - 1 yr max)
Boateng (too expensive - rep. as money grabber)
Weir (wont move now at 39yo)

    Savage please NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Halmosi will cost at least £1.5m and his temperament is questionable

Comment 105. I do agree with you, Ince would be an inspired choice as manager, but we are wolves and its the trait not to gamble with manager with little experience. I think at the time, Ince was not ready, BUT I think he is, but he will never come to wolves as I am sure in football circles and with male pride at stake, Moxey wont back down to his stance of not apppointing him and Ince would probably say no to the job if he was asked to come. Either way we have got MM for another season. Lets just forget about it all, sit back, relax, look to see who he brings in and god hopes we play the style of football that got us chanting SUPER MICK in that 1st season.
However alot needs to change if we are going to get back to that level, but lets see…..

A message to Terry Baggie & Happy Baggie have some pride man and go away. You post are annoying, stupid, no substance and have no meaning which probably sums you up as a person.

Good list some of whom i agree would be perfect..JJ, without a doubt, but i’d put him through a comprehnsive medical,Stelios and Campo if they’d come…would do a job in this leauge easy and be a mssive inspiration to the young squad coming through. We need generals not privates. Bowyer forget it..his career is over and comes with too much baggage to give us a good season or two. There’s a fellow called Eastwood hardly got a game last season..if you introduce quality midfield, he’ll score a shed load…Philips…agreed, you have to be quick off the mark though and we need to move quicker….plan B was implemented the days we missed out on the play offs…get the targets quick, we need 5 players. 3 expereinced and two youngsters. Stelios, Philips, Campo, Berra, one other.

  114. Tipton Wolf said:

Lets break the bank and get Danny Murphy in.. he’ll do a job for us

  115. Nippy Lobo said:

Of the names mentioned, only Boateng, Solano and Campo appeal to me. Stelios? When was he ever golden? And what about a manager? Maybe scouse Steve Morgan will bring us Roy Evans!

In central defence, Craddock will have to do! McCarthy is doing a good job rebuilding the rest of the team, but with only Craddock and the two Collinses we’re headed for a relegation battle next season. We need young, fast, athletic players, e.g., Berra and Gunter, like a fish needs water!

On the next manager, look on the bright side! Apart from Ince, ex-Wolves Darren Ferguson (Peterborough), Alex Rae (Dundee), Mixu Paatelainen (Hibs) and John Ward (Carlisle) are all managers now. Give them another year and one of them should have emerged as a good successor to McCarthy.

As another wolves-fan livning in Denmark I do think it’s interesting that a people here come up with Gravesen as a possibility for a ”golden oldie”. I think it would be a big gamble to sign him. He’s infamous in Denmark for his unstabil mental state. He quit the national team with no reason, refusing to speak to the press .. ”but we all know” it was because the press wrote a lot about his relationsship with a famous danish porn-star. And you can’t seriously have been monitoring the last couple of years of his career. He should never have gone to Real Madrid in 2005(but that’s easy to say now – I know) – he has never later reached the level from the early Everton-days. Now he’s back in Celtic after a rather unsuccesful loan-spell in Everton, and being out of favour, maybe he would have an interest in signing here. I doubt it. I think his demand would be to big for our wage-structure and I don’t think he has any ambition in the game anymore, but I could be proven wrong.

72 - in all fairness, and im Wolves through and through, Mowbray did well t win the division……. I didnt want Mick when we appointed him but when we finished in the playoffs I praised him for doing well.

Yes mate Halmosi can play on the wing but is a seriously effective mid field player.
    102 greeno.
Not forgotten his injury I still flinch when I think about it. Anyone who drops the nut on Elkobi is likely to come off second best. I do not know how long he is likely to be out but he is a very good strong centre half when fit.
    106 JJ-The Original
I would expect he would cost all of £1~5m. How much do you think we need to pay to obtain the sort of quality we need to gain promotion from this division in the coming season?
His temperament is at times fiery do you not expect that in a ball winning midfield player. Are you saying that Ince was not competative.

Mick shouldn’t even consider moving for Gravesen. He was(and unfortunately is again)a total embarassment at Celtic Park. Go for Celtic pair (available) big Bobo Balde and Derek Riordan Mick and work your side around them. See you in the Premiership!

  124. Simon in Oklahoma! said:

    121. Freddy in Scotland…Balde is impressive & could have the sort of impact John DeWolf had for us, but is he still any good cause he hasn’t played much for the last couple of seasons?

    95. Craig_Wolves. I agree with you. I think our wage structure & ‘young & hungry’ policy simply means cheap & unambitious. Sadly most of the players fans have listed here won’t give us a second look cause they can finish their careers elsewhere on much more attractive contracts. Young untried ‘potential’ players are obviously in no position to make wage demands…which is why we buy them. Kites was a nobody now he’s somebody, & not surprisingly he doesn’t want to be on ‘nobody’ wages any more. I think its more Moxey’s penny pinching than Kite’s greed.

I think a wage structure shouldn’t be set in stone & if it means paying double for the likes of Carsley then do it…cause he’s worth more than 2 of our players anyway. But sadly…we won’t.

    Simon :)

A team needs a mixture of young and hungry + experience. Golden Oldies have a part to play. But the ‘golden’ bit refers to the attitude of the players. The danger is signing has-beens who are in it for a last big pay cheque to boost their retirement. Some players are winners (e.g. Ince) and will give 100% every game just because winning is what makes them tick. No problem with the ‘Golden oldie’ strategy as long as we buy ‘golden’ and not just old’en.

Players like Paul Ince and Denis Irwin have opinions and MM won’t stand for that

  128. Bridget & Tony said:

Whilst Moxey is CEO at Wolves Paul Ince will NEVER be considered as a potential manager in our view!

A manager that has a personality, guts and ideas will NEVER do as Moxey needs someone who will fit in with his methods and budgets

Young & Hungry = Cheap & Cheerfull - Golden Oldies = Left Overs & Cheap

NB* In our view theres no difference between paying for an experienced player at a higher wage level and signing a cheaper player for a fee of £1.5m (an average Championship fee)
If its done for say 1 season with an eye on a Top 2 spot - surely the possible prize of £60m Prem money is worth it?

EG: Darren Ward - Transfer fee of £400k plus wages of £5k pw? 1 year = £660,000? Was he worth that? Or would it not have been sensible to get either a Prem loanee or maybe an experienced free transfer at centre half instead???

As much as we would love to see Incey in the managers hotseat; we’re afraid that wont happen whilst Moxeys here!!!

After all the decent free transfers are snapped up - we’ll be in for the leftovers - Lets just hope we get a few decent ones!!!

I am a contractor that works with many championship clubs. I am well informed that Mick Mccarthy will be replaced as Wolves manager. Steve Morgan has lost paitence with Mick after discussing transfer targets. Rather then look for etablished pros (like Fowler and hasslebank which got Cardiff to the Fa Cup final), the list included no league journeyman such as omalley, riley and obrien. Get ready to see mick moved and the talk is Morgans Liverpool connection will see John Barnes recruited to the top job with Graeme Souness as Director of football to mentor Barnes through.
