Wolves’ new boy Sam Vokes is determined to cap a whirlwind few days by winning his first Welsh full cap.
Vokes became manager Mick McCarthy’s first summer signing on Friday after penning a four-year deal from Bournemouth.
The 18-year-old barely had time to unpack his bags before he was off to join new team-mates Wayne Hennessey, David Edwards and Freddy Eastwood in the full Welsh squad.
Vokes has been included for the first time for the friendlies away to Iceland on Wednesday and Holland next Sunday.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to go away with Wales and if I get a cap that will be a brilliant feeling,” he said.
“It would cap off a great few days if it happens. Any player wants to play at international level so if I get the call I’ll be very happy.”
Vokes arrived at Molineux after playing in the same Wales under-21 team as Hennessey and Edwards, whose opinion he sought before joining Wolves.
“I spoke to Dave Edwards in the week who assured me what a great club it is,” said Vokes. “It’s easier to come into a team where you know a couple of players.
“I’ll be able to get to know the other lads pre-season.”
Vokes is taking nothing for granted at Molineux – after revealing his first ambition is simply to win a place in the team.
The 18-year-old joins six strikers, with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Andy Keogh and Stephen Ward and transfer-listed Freddy Eastwood, Jay Bothroyd and Stephen Elliott. Another, freed Sunderland man Dwight Yorke, was linked with Wolves at the weekend.
The youngster is determined to impress in pre-season to ensure he is in line for a place by the time the big Championship kick-off comes around on August 9.
“I just want to come in here and prove myself,” said Vokes. “If I can do that on the training field then I will get a crack in the first team.”

We need 2 centre halfs a central midfielder attack minded! and i dont know much about vokes but someone who can score and assist e-banks blake.
LMAO about the Dwight Yorke talk, though it would be a good transfer for experience, just hope if it does happen he aint on stupid wages.

All these daily articles and interviews are enough to turn the head of any 18 year old who suddenly has big bucks in his pocket and an international call up.
I hope he has a good adviser to keep his feet on the ground and his head out of the clouds. The football world is littered with ‘what a shame’ stories of kids for whom too much came too soon.
