Sky Blues plan £1m bid for Freddy

freddy.jpgCoventry have emerged as the frontrunners in the race to sign Wolves striker Freddy Eastwood.

The Sky Blues are ready to pay Wolves an initial £1m up front, with £500,000 to follow based on goals and appearances.

That deal would allow the club to eventually get their money back on the £1.5m they paid Southend a year ago.

Norwich, Derby and Crystal Palace have also been linked with a move for Eastwood, but the Ricoh Stadium appears to be his most likely destination now.

Coventry are believed to be the only club who have made a firm enquiry for the former Southend hitman.

The 24-year-old has proved to be Mick McCarthy’s most controversial signing and Wolves and Eastwood are determined there will be a parting of the ways this summer to end one of the biggest debates of recent times among the Molineux public.

The last of Eastwood’s 10 starts came on Boxing Day as he increasingly became a peripheral figure under McCarthy.

Fans remain puzzled at the lack of opportunities for Eastwood, who quickly became a favourite.

But McCarthy maintains Eastwood didn’t do the job he expected of him when he did play.

“He’s available for transfer,” said McCarthy. “There are times when I think he hasn’t done well enough for us. Maybe he just doesn’t fit into my team. It’s nothing personal, but he’s available for transfer.”

Having kicked off his spending spree with his first summer signing yesterday with the arrival of Sam Vokes, Wolves are set for one of their busiest summers in the transfer market.

McCarthy is waiting to see if Burnley accept his £2.25m plus Stephen Elliot offer for Kyle Lafferty and has released defender Gary Breen and made defenderr Darren Ward, midfielder Darren Potter and strikers Eastwood, Jay Bothroyd and Elliott available.

The Wolves boss has also been heavily linked with Derby midfielder David Jones and wants at least one central defender, a central midfielder and another striker.

I’d try and hold out for the 1.5mil upfront with maybe add-ons on top of that!

If i remember rightly last summer, southend have a sell on clause therefore would be due some of our money, so we need to probably sell for atleast 1.6m or 1.7m to get our 1.5m back!

Just would like this over now, get rid and use the money for a good centre back! Come on Wolves

£1m plus a bag of tracksuits would be a good deal. I reckon the bag of tracksuits would score more goals than Freddy though.

yep lets get rid of freddy cos now we’ve got an 18 year old kid untried at this level, from a relegated league two side. and who’s he gonna replace eh? keogh..seb..don’t think so.

yes he’s one for the future..just like our promotion ambitions..morgan has a 10 year plan, can’t see us goin up that quickly..can you.

GOIN NOWHERE THE MCARTHY WAY..AS USUAL..OH YES!

Brilliant bit of business signing Sam Vokes for approx £250K, sheer madness to sell Freddie for just £1 million up front. There are other clubs interested so surely we can do better than this.
I have faith that Moxey will get us the best deal.
If the term “undisclosed fee” is mentioned then we all know we gave him away.

    Or maybe not lol

shame certain sections of our fan’s try and undermine the manager by calling for his inclusion at every oportunity, thus making his position at the club untenable. Who knows, Freddy may of seen the light, changed his attitude eventually and lived up to his potential. Guess we’ll never know.
    Should fit in at chaventry

  19. Rob_Wolves said:

I agree with no.3. Freddy was potentially a great player and still could very well be but he obviously doesn’t figure in our plans anymore so thats that as far as wolves are concerned. No point us dwelling on it now, lets concentrate on the future and the potential of Vokes.
He must be good for the interest he attracted and at 18,hes the right age for the ethos we are building. Now lets get ATLEAST one central defender and a creative midfielder.I agree, elliot ward would be a great signing, see if old JM can do some business and work his magic there maybe?

  20. southbank barmy army said:

before you all start wetting your pants about sam vokes..just remember this..WE ALREADY HAVE AN 18 YEAR OLD HOT SHOT STRIKER CALLED LIAM HUGHES.

one of our home grown young guns with huge potential, joint top scorer with rosa in the reserves last season. plus 2 very promising loan spells with bury and stafford rangers. if we needed a striker then we needed another proven player like sylvan. more evidence of total disregard of our own academy graduates.

GET RID OF FREDDY AND MUPPET, THEN WE REALLY CAN END THE FARCE AT MOLINEUX.

mr cool, agreed with freddy, best off away now. totally disagree about liam tho’. i’ve seen him play many times and the lad has huge potential. he’s quick powerful and knows where the goal is, surely now is the time to bring him in to first team contention.

sam vokes is a brilliant signing i’m thrilled he’s come to us. but again we’re gonna end up with too many strikers when midfield and central defence are the main worry at the moment. and for sam to play..either keogh or seb will have to drop to the bench. no way he could drop seb is there..and no way will muppet drop keogh either. and we’re still chasing 2 more strikers..where the hell are they gonna go.

oh i forgot under muppet they can play in any position apart from their natural one..silly me

This Eastwood debate has split the fans. The BEST and ONLY way to solve the problem is for him to go!

Also if when we do sell Freddy can we have a clause in the transfer that he cannot play against us next year? I think Man Utd did it with Howard and Spurs with Defoe!

9 - He also scored against Sheff Weds away, but maybe you dont go away!

Good luck Freddy, hope you have the chance to do what you do best, and what we missed out on seeing you do.

  48. Andy_Wolves said:

southbank barmy army, are you a baggie in disguise as a wolves fan? if you knew anything about wolves, surely you realise that 1) Hughes did not have a, and i quote, ”very promising loan spell” at stafford rangers last year, in fact Bully sent him back to wolves early because he was so far below the level required to keep a team in the conference.
And 2) complaining that we’re going to, and i quote again, ”end up with too many strikers” when mick has signed one, when lets face it, bothroyd, elliott and freddie are off. If he shouldnt be buying a striker, who do you suggest playing up front if SEB or Keogh are injured next year? Hughes? No! In my view we still need another striker so we then have 4 to choose from next year. We clearly need a couple of centre halves and a creative mid as well, but give mick a chance. I think you are clearly just anti mick and any chance to have a pop at him and you’ll have a go, even if your arguments are severely flawed!!!

  49. wolf72 said:

Well said 33! Couldn’t agree more, i’m sick and tired of these Freddy Freddy Freddy south bank knuckle heads!!!

The south bank ain’t what it used to be! Through the toughest years of the 80’s it was our traditional home end, one that got behind the team and spurred us onwards and upwards. Full of positivity even when the club was on its backside!!

Now all we seem to get is negative, whinging, moaning and fickle chanting for whoever happens to be flavour of the month. Today’s south bank seems to be doing more harm to this club than the Bhatti brothers did!

I know that the vibe that comes from the south bank is borne out of some bizarre and twisted loyalty to the club but I firmly believe that the young team last year lost a good many points because of the lack of true support from the south bank!

I feel as though I can say this with some qualification as I have stood and sat on the south bank now week in week out for most of my life but am moving this season to the Steve Bull cos i’m sick and tired of the damage that these so called fans are doing to my club and I don’t want to be associated with it any longer!!

Get behind MM and get behind whichever 11 players pull on that famous old gold jersey! Maybe then we might see the club return to its rightful place in footballs top flight!

    Up the Wolves!

I’m sorry but Freddy IS a good player and he’s a better forward then Keogh, yes i did just say that and yes you will see next season that when Freddy actually gets given a chance, he’ll be the league top scorer, just you watch.

McCarthy just hasn’t got a clue, Freddy didn’t perform because Mick ruined the way he played and made him come back to defend all the time surely we should be able to rely on our defenders to defend like Collins…ermm..oops???!!!

  51. Whartons right cross said:

Quite frankly I’m pretty embarressed you sit in the same stand as me…

I will be sad to see Freddy go, as he has real class, but the board back Mick and Freddy and him don’t get on, so he will go. However I believe the likes of QPR will offer 2mill + for Eastwood, so I say we hold out for a bit, instead of considering measley bids from an in debt Coventry.

southbank, did liam hughes score on any of them “succesful loan spells” as you call them! he was at stafford for 1 month, played 3 games and was poor from what i remember (was injured for most of it!) and i have a good friend who plays for bury and he said liam couldnt break into the side thats why he was sent back to wolves!!!!!

as for any signings/selling of players, you are going to boo the lot really arent you?? you dont want mm here so everything must be “sooo negative”

also, as for anyone scoring in the reserves, have you seen the standard???? its not the best, playing against hereford/kidderminster#s reserves…also dont see too many clubs trying to buy rosa do you????? strange that he has been transfer listed for a year now and no one wants him….. hmmmmm

oh and 1 last dig at you SOUTHBANK DOESNT KNOW WHERE HIS CAPS LOCK BUTTON IS! keogh has now scored 3 goals in 3 games for Ireland this last week, 1 tonite a screamer against serbia, now if freddie is a legend cause he scored 2 goals against part time luxembourg, 1 against a very poor slovakia side and 1 in a friendly against a depleted bulgaria side (not saying keogh is better, just saying if you dont rate keogh, then freddie aint much better!!)

now look, im not saying i really want freddie to go either, i wish he would stay and be the goal machine we all want him to be, but it aint worked, he is going, so lets get the best price for him! also, after 1 full season, there has obviously been something that hasnt impressed MM, all this i hope he scores elsewhere crap is stupid, why do we want our competitors to do well????!!! I for one hope he goes away and never scores again, cause then MM would be right and it wont harm the club!

Sell him for the first serious offer and be done with the whole thing!

Let’s get this into perspective. To be fair to the lad, even Freddy Eastwood admitted struggling to fit into a new system. I, along with everyone else at Wolves I would imagine, wish Freddy all the best of luck wherever he ends up. (Apart from when he plays against us.)

If he scores a hatful of goals elsewhere, that will still not prove that MM was wrong about him. It will mean only that he fits in better with their system than he did with ours. Personally, I feel he will not score more than a dozen or so next season if his new club is in the Championship. (Of course, I could be proved wrong, but that is the nature of opinions.)

My opinion of Mick McCarthy is that he is a proven manager at this level. I don’t think he is perfect, but I don’t believe anyone else is either. (Remember that SAF also signed Veron, Djemba Djemba and others that didn’t work out.) (No, MM is nowhere in the same ability league as SAF, but I am pointing out that even the best get it wrong now and then. Whhy should we expect perfection from a lesser individual than the best.) MM will get us up next season, if he gets the defence right. (A lot of people call for a creative midfielder. We already have that individual if we can get Davies fully fit. Some call for cover for Kights and J|arvis. We have that if we can keep Gobern, Jones, Gray and Davies fit. One thing I hope from Mick next season is that he allows Davies, Gleeson, Little, Jones, Lee Collins, Hughes, Bennett, Salmon, etc from our Academy a chance to at least make some contribution next season. (If not starting regularly in the league, lets see them at least on the bench, and maybe play against ant “lesser teams” that we get drawn against in cup competitions. Doing that would improve his relationship with most fans. (Okay, some would get upset if playing these youngsters in the cups meant that we lost against those lower teams. It would give these youngsters valuable experience that would bode well for our team’s future. Wenger did it at Arsenal, and look where a number of those youngsters are now. Yep, they are now regulars in the first team.
