Motorists were today warned to brace themselves for months of delays when major gas main works start at Birmingham New Road, which is one of Wolverhampton’s busiest junctions, on Monday.
A lane will be shut from Monday and temporary traffic lights will be set up during the 20-week project at its junction with Thompson Avenue and Parkfield Road in Parkfields.
Work starts in Thompson Avenue, where the gas main running between Cockshutt Lane and Dixon Street will be replaced.
Temporary traffic lights will be set up during off-peak hours in Thompson Avenue during that phase of the project, which will last eight weeks.
Contractors working for National Grid then move onto the main junction with the Birmingham New Road, where the inter-city lane will be shut for three weeks.
Project manager Stan Best said: “We have planned this job around the school summer holiday so the work at this major junction will be carried out while the roads are comparatively quiet.
“We realise this work will cause some inconvenience to motorists but we ask them to bear with us.”
In all, the West Midlands Gas Alliance is replacing 1,500 metres of old metal main in the area with new plastic pipe.
Severn Trent is also still working in Wood Lane in Bushbury to carry out emergency repairs to sewers.
