Wolves in move for Lafferty

Kyle laffertyWolves have tempted Burnley with a £2.25m cash offer plus Stephen Elliott for forward Kyle Lafferty.

Boss Mick McCarthy hopes to bring a year-long chase for the Northern Ireland international to a close by beating off bids from Rangers and Celtic.

Rangers already have a £2.5m bid on the table for the 20-year-old, who is one of the hottest properties outside the Premier League.

Celtic made a £3.5m cash plus player offer in the last transfer window and the Hoops are expected to come in again for the player, who scored nine goals from left midfield this season.

News of fresh interest in Lafferty was greeted with a flat bat at Turf Moor, where it’s believed they are seeking £4m for their prize asset.

Id like him down here. He’s only 20 and has great potential. He can also play on the left wing.

  2. Loyal-Cannock-Wolf said:

Laferty would strike up a good partnership with SEB I reckon, although his record doesn’t look prolific, he’s still young and looks very promising. I can only hope that Burnley accept ’cause we all know Mick wont break the bank.

he will never come to us

£2m and a quarter plus Elliot? I’d take that! Sadly, I doubt the nice folk up at Burnley would… also, it depends on whether or not Lafferty would rather play as first choice in the Championship or off the bench in the SPL…

  5. S*U*P*E*R said:

Every time I’ve seen him, he’s looked quality. Not sure he’d do a job in the prem, but he’d certainly help get us there!

  6. The Wolf said:

No chance with that offer, just offer what they want. He obviously is quality, Elliot isn’t worth half what we paid for him.

  7. Dr Wolf said:

    Plus Stephen Elliott?

Wouldn’t the money and a box of old socks have been more tempting?

  8. wandering_wolf said:

Does this mean we’re aiming to have a squad of one always injured but otherwise excellent goalkeeper, another excellent goalkeeper and twenty-four forwards again?

Only joking. We did score less goals than Derby County managed points last season, so fair enough.

I’m just hoping we remember to look at other positions. We just seem to always be signing forwards.

Great news for once! A good player in this league for sure and only 20. I think we could offer Freddy though if they don’t want elliot thus killing 2 birds with 1 stone??

    Another forward???
Is Mick just going to keep buying forwards until he finds another gem like SEB??
I keep hearing about this lad but have only seen him play 4 times in the flesh, he played ok, and at 20 is still very young. The problem Wolves might find is that the boy might see you as much of a move forward, where as Celtic and Rangers will tempt him more. Plus if Burnley rejected a larger offer from Celtic in January what makes Moxey think they will sell now for considerably less?? Maybe offer him a pie and pint aswell, that might seal the deal!!!

  17. Beobridge Wolf said:

Like the look of him, could make a really good partnership with SEB, with Kites and Jarvis doing the supply work!
Let’s just get on with it!!
Just a bit of deja vu - but where is the quality centrehalf, we all know is desperately required???

  18. Happy_baggie said:

How many goals did Lafferty get last season ??

I’ve looked at the scorers table and he aint in the top 15 strikers from last season in the championship.

What is it with Wolves and strikers who can’t score ??

You bought Kyle who scores when there is a P in the month - and now this guy. SEB can’t do it all on his own.

You missed out on the playoffs by 1 goal - surely everyone can see whats needed….

  19. Wolfie said:

Happy Baggie - Didn’t he spend a lot of the season on the wing?

Why not do the same comparison on wingers?

  20. Rob_Wolves said:

Could be a valuable addition, would definately give that “something different” up front that MM says he was looking for with Kyle.
However im not sure as to the price. We are obviously gunna have to bid higher if we want to compete with rangers for his signature and £3-£4 million on one player is a hell of a lot. Especially seeing as no-one knows our budget???
And as people are saying, SURELY SURELY SURELY this year the priority has to be two good strong CB’s and a creative midfielder?

Mick dpesn’t seem to realise that we need a quick decent center half.
He would be a great addition but there’s no way Burnley will take that offer. Maybe we should offer 2.5m Elliot and Thick Mick.

  30. Craig_Wolves said:

Would be a decent signing IMO,but i wouldnt stick him out wide left,Jarvis & Kites are pacey & will do the buisness next season, his tall so i would play him along side SEB,but he hasnt a prolific goalscoring record so he isnt worth as much as they say he is,still rather him than wasting 1mill on donkey howard, with Lafferty theres youth on his side.

  31. Fox Wolf said:

A tall talented player with loads of potential. 4M and forget Elliott might just turn their heads.
Freddie, if we must sell and 1M to us….lol. Seriously he’s our only bargaining tool of the players up for grabs.

    06/07 - 35 Appearances, 4 Goals, 0 Assists
    05/06 - 11 Appearances, 1 Goal, 1 Assist

Looks to me like he can’t score or assist! Why are we even thinking about him? Sign PROVEN players. We want to be in the Prem in a year not about 8 when our team has matured

Stick at that offer, no more. Certainly not £4 million. He scored a quality goal for Northern Ireland and has played wide a lot for Burnley but he is not worth that. Anyway we need to look at signings that could play in the Premiership, the following season as that is where we are going.

a 4 million price tag is not for Championship purses…at any cost, Wolves can’t afford to shop at Burnley at those prices…getting him from Harrods would be cheaper!
The player who is unsettled and may be looking for a change and who can score at this level Is Joe Kamara, but i know he won’t meet with wide approval. he could be available realitically at 3.5m…still over priced but you’d be paying for the experience, doubt he’d come though.
    GET PHILIPS!!

re 52 - is Ebanks-Blake Irish? Or Dave Edwards? Or Elokobi, Kightly or Jarvis? You obviously don’t realise how tiresome this sad old notion of ‘McCarthy only buys Irish or ex-Sunderland players’ has become, do you? Do you think that when you’re old and grey, lying on your deathbed, you’ll still be repeating the mantra ‘Irish, ex-Sunderland’ ad infinitum? Why not finally give this one a rest, mate?…

  61. Happy_baggie said:

Greg … so you think £4M for a winger (forward) who can’t score is a good move for a team that needs goals ??

Also who gets dropped - Kightly or Jarvis ??

IMO this would only be viable if Kightly goes - and thats a real possibility…

as for our defenders - you are just believing you rown rubbish… we were no worse than the rst of the top 6 - yes we let some in, but +30 goal difference tells its own story.

We were winning 5-1 whilst you lot were drawing 0-0 - thats why we are champions and you lot are playing swansea next season.

  62. deeps said:

why are we trying to buy players know…? there is a big shopping window opening this summer, and we are bound to get some real quality at bargin prices!!! a few million would get some good players..

Sorry Happy, I realise I must have touched a nerve there. I didn’t mean to get you so upset… even though you are a visiting poster on this board I will try not to say anything that may provoke you from now on, being that you are obviously quite a sensitive chap.

So yes, West Brom are great.. but I think that fans of Hull, Crystal Palace and Bristol City may beg to differ with your assertion that your defence was no worse than anyone else’s in the top 6. Even our own defence, shackled with the likes of Gary Breen, Neill Collins and Darren Ward managed to keep out more than you lot!

Now tell me, if that’s a fact… am I lying?

And not wanting 2 bring the freddy saga up again, but 2 be fair 2 freddy, his goals ratio per game were better than Laffertys last season & we need someone who can stick the ball in the net regularly & not havin 2 rely on SEB again !!

  68. Celtic Jim said:

Lafferty does remind me a bit of the late great Doog.I think playing up front he would scoere goals.Remember Peter Beardsley hardly scored any goals when he was at Carlisle but once he moved to the top league he scored regular ! lets hope Lafferty wull be the same.Stop messing around wolves show you want him a mke a proper bid.the only problem though is if you are paying £4m for a player then realistically that player should be going to the premiership !

  69. brummie rob wolves said:

    61) On talking to a few Albion fans, your defence is poor. You won’t have the benefit of goals next season as you have no-one there capable of scoring them in the top league. Phillips was 3 or 4 years ago, but not now.
Don’t worry about who are Wolves are after. Look after yourselves, as you need at least half a dozen to have a chance of survival.
I read some Albion fan the other day working out where they will get their points from. They said 6 from Stoke. What’s your record like against them? They love playing the Albion!

  70. Prawn Sandwich said:

Would be a decent signing but hang on a minute, the one thing the Fat Controller is good at is keeping things behind closed doors till after the deal’s done so I doubt there’s much to this. Newspapers still need to be filled though!

  71. Happy_baggie said:

Greg 63 - No problem from my side pal - I’m very happy thank you !!

Which stat are you talking about - are you saying we DIDN’T have a plus 30 goal difference ??

We let one or two more in than some teams - but scored over 20 more - but to you this is a point of derision…

I will be the first to say that we need to strengthen our defence for the coming season - but I’m sure you will admit (seeing as we won the league) that we were certainly good enough for last season.

we will certainly be improving our team for next season - inc defense - but what are you lot gonna do ?? Howard, Lafferty - the list is endless….

Now if you had just kept out one goal - or maybe if you had manged to score just one against our rubbish defense you would have made the playoffs….

66 - and you lot will be another wolves… ha ha !!

..so what would have happened to Wolves defence if you had go promoted ? We conceded so few in the Championship, our defence can withstand any Premiership attack. You do need a reality check if S*U*P*E*R I is having a knock at out attack as well. Remember all our three top goalscorers per full game had a better ratio goals per game than SB. If you knock a superior often enough you eventually become deluded in thinking that you have something better than what you really have. Seriously, Wolves fans knocking Albion fans on their defence is pushing things to the limit. If it weren’t for Craddock (when playing) and Hennesey, I’m afraid our shocking goal difference would’ve been even worse. Whilst Im no boo boy - Collins ? Ward ? Both had plenty of shockers. MM’s biggest mistake last year was not getting in quality centre backs.

Personally Im not sure about Lafferty. I really dont see how he will do any better than Keogh who Socred more than him last season, and I think Keogh and SEB will be superb next season, all the Keogh knockers amaze me - when SEB arrived him and Keogh looked great together. I suppose it would create competition with Freddy and Elliott going though.

If you had £4m, you would probably buy a big house, double glazing for your grandmother and go on a three-month holiday to Mustique. Wolves manager Mick McCarthy would rather buy Burnley’s Kyle Lafferty.
The most Irish manager in football will then tie up a deal for Sam Vokes of Bournemouth, who has been described as a ‘wonderkid’ but almost certainly is not.

I agree that we need to sign young hungry players that want to go places with us, but we also need some experience. I think we really lacked leadership last year, and once we went behind, the players heads went down.

For all his faults, George has that experience and tries to motivate those around him (although it’s a shame he can’t motivate himself into a tackle!)

Someone like Lee Carsley or Domonic Matteo would be ideal in my opinion. Henry is ok, but will never be more than a fringe player. Let George go to Sunderland if they want to offer a substantial figure, and bring in an old head. Couple that with someone creative like David Edwards or Kris Commons, and I think we’re onto a winner.

You post the same drivel everyday. You bang on about who you’d like to see down molineux, is it because you have them on your football manager game? You have added to your list the players we are linked with. If we are linked with Phillips from Albion you will add him to your list saying we HAVE to get him, how boring!

I thought I would respond to your post because no-one else has for the last 4 effing weeks you’ve been banging on about those players, now change the record!

I’m based in the north.Lafferty is a young player, and would be a good investment (to trade or sell later) He isn’t consistent or prolific and needs a lot of coaching to help him develop - Would he get that under MM or TC?
The price tag with players in part ex is reasonable, but Burnley want a lot more than that

  114. Bournemouth Wolf said:

He’s ok, but isn’y worth anything like 4M. More like 2M. I still say go back to Cardiff, try Ledley again and Capaldi for OF and JB, with a bit of cash. That would be better for us - we need to bolster the defence and we need a quality creative midfielder. JFDI…

Lafferty is another youngster, will he improve enough to keep MM in a job if we fail to impress next season?
Sort out the defence and the creative midfileder and our current strikers will do the job.

Good player but a bit pricey because he is unproven but has a lot of potential

  120. Claretforever1988 said:

I’m a season ticket holder at Burnley and I personally wouldn’t like to swap elliott + £2.25 for lafferty. Lafferty played almost all season on the left wing, thats why his goals record isn’t brilliant. Given a chance upfront, I think he has the potential to score 20+ goals a season. We are trying to build a team to challenge for promotion so I don’t think we would sell to one of our rivals, if we sell at all.

Also with celtic and rangers interested, I wouldn’t expect that you would be able to offer the amount of money they could

  121. KH Wolf said:

This feels like an awful lot of money for a player yet to prove himself? If we’re in the market for potential then I would much rather go for Vokes?

  122. otterburnwolf said:

    Go n get him McCarthy.
    Seb/Lafferty up front.

Let Burnley take the pick of Freddy,Keogh,Elliott,Jay,S.Ward & more than anything Terry ‘Notebook’Connor!!!!!
Go away Connor & never come back.

Biggest problem last season was Mick’s righthand man Taff wasn’t with him on the touchline.

All he had was Connor….it reminded me of The Muppets with the two oldies in the balcony!!!!!

Is it really fanciful that a player would pick Wolves over Rangers or Celtic? Don’t forget that Jackie Mac, then Celtic captain turned down their contract offer to join the Wolves and Kenny Miller came down from Rangers when he was breaking through there.

  127. Happy_baggie said:

Ha Ha - comparing a winger who can’t score with the Doog - this is why we laugh at you - the over reaction and hype that you guys do EVERY time…. did you learn nothing from the Eastwood saga (remember when he was the new Bully - or was that SEB - oh yes, Freddie was the the new king John…)

So Freddy is John richards, SEB is Bully and Lafferty is the Doog…. I suppose Breen was Billy Wright and Oli is kenny Hibbitt - oh, musn’t for Kightly - he MUST be Waggy.

To compare Burnley’s mediocre winger to one of your greatest ever players shows a lack of respect to the Doog and a complete loss of reality.

Look at yourselves - if you aint fighting each other and splitting your club into pieces you are setting your players and yourselves ridiculous targets that can only end in more disappointment and aggro.

I used to enjoy coming on here and either ribbing you or talking football with some of the “uprights” - but this weird and nasty world you all live in is too depressing.

    Bye Bye….

p.s - if you have SEB and Lafferty up front - will they be know as Seberty - BOING !!!

Happy you really know your Wolves stuff. I would struggle to name one albion player pre 1980 other than Astle, and I would go head to head with anyone in a football quiz.
Only a Wolves fan would get so upset about comparing the Doog to Lafferty, I think youve been found out.

  130. Happy_baggie said:

Robbo - actually I know plenty of football fans who don’t support wolves who hold the Doog in great affection - your obvious lack of respect to him, and your lack of knowledge of football in general only highlights the points I made.

i would never compare anyone to Jeff Astle - not Bob Taylor, kev phillips,or anyone… some people are beyond compare.

As for going “head to head” - I think I can name probably 15/20 posters just on these pages who would make you look a mug in a football quiz.

Football wasn’t invented by SKY Sports you know.

kyle lafferty wont score as many goals keogh would. keogh is 10 times better than lafferty if lafferty is accepting to conme to sit on the bench he would be a good signing but we shoodnt drop keogh he plays soo good this season eg coming on at 65 mins against leicester and getin man of the match and sxcoring a double in our thumping fa cup win over watford.

Can’t believe someone suggested you pay £2m + Eastwood for Lafferty, they’re not in the same league!!! Jeez MM really must have stuffed Freddy’s career for someone to post that - as a Shrimper I’m staggered. That’s surely a deal that should work the other way round……

why the hard feelings wolves fans we conceded more goals because of the style of play which was to attack teams, wolves played a more defensive game so inturn conceaded less goals thats why you your goal difference let you down that a fair comment.

ah, lafferty is qaulity, ill give him that, and we should sign him. however, mick wont break the bank to sign him and will only offer ‘little bits’. besides, defense is a main concern, as well as creativity in midfield. kris commons perhaps? although he’s probably off to derby.

  148. iainhill said:

well he cant be a replacement for kightly because his good and neather jarvis there both good so he will play upfront i reckon

  149. Steve Bull Stand said:

I think a lot of you think that if we sign another goalscorer Wolves will score as many as Albion did last year. Truth is that MM will always play it cautious and his teams will never score many goals. Once his teams get 1-0 up they try to shut the door.
I think Keogh did really well to get double figures as support striker in a team that doesn’t score goals cause of their cautious style of play.
