Striker vows to silence critics

jay.jpgJay Bothroyd says his Wolves career is over - but has vowed to prove he can be a success elsewhere.

Yesterday the Express & Star revealed transfer-listed Bothroyd is being chased by Stoke, Cardiff and Nottingham Forest.

Wolves are expected to demand a six-figure fee for the much-travelled former Arsenal trainee, who still has a year left on his contract.

But like fellow up-for-offer team-mates Rob Edwards and Freddy Eastwood, Bothroyd is determined that won’t be at Molineux.

“My time with Wolves has come to an end,” said Bothroyd. “Along with others, I’m on the transfer list.

“I’ve got friends I’ll miss, but being transfer-listed doesn’t mean the season has ended on a downer.

“The manager had a chat to me and he wants something different next season.

“There are no sour grapes on my part. I hope things go well for the manager. He’s a lovely guy and I don’t have a bad word to say about him.”

Bothroyd will be tempted by Stoke if the enquiry firms up, especially after gaining a taste of success on loan at the Britannia Stadium.

Bothroyd claims there is also interest from Spain but he’s determined to prove himself in England after spells at six different clubs.

“Apparently there has been interest from a Spanish side, Recreativo Huelva,” he said on his icons website.

“I’ve already played overseas with Perugia but I’d like to stay in this country. I want to stay and show people in England I can perform. I know I can do a good job. I’m still young and I want to show people I can fulfil my potential.”

Doesn’t sound like he was forced to say those pro-MM comments at gunpoint, does it?

Shame it didn’t work out for him at Wolves as he is undoubtedly a talented player - looked for a while like MM might have been the first manager to fully channel the ability out of him correctly but t’was not to be..

  5. wolveswolves said:

Jay you need to prove it too yourself as well.
So many clubs in such a space of time shows you haven’t been doing it.
    I wish him well though

Lazy! but also thanks for the goal against them.

You could pick out the same defiant headline quote from about 4 or 5 regional newspapers that span this mans career, disappointing to say the least. Wishing you well though Jay, no hard feelings.

    Re 1
Agree totally - another skillful player Mick dismissed because he didn’t put a proper shift in.
I think he could have been a good player for us if he was handled properly.

1)Impact is the word. He certainly does not warrant a starting berth. One of our ‘players’ who looked disinterested at Cardiff and did not have to suffer watching it from the Cardiff stand!
A talented player on his day but Wolves need to move on.

Waste of talent? Waste of space more like.

Get him out the door. We’ve got no space for fair weather players like Bothroyd. On his day he could be fantastic trouble is, his days were about as frequent as a solar eclipse.

Fingers crossed we find some poor mug to cough up a decent fee. If not, my 5-a-side team are lookign for players, he might have to start in goals though.

I am sure Fabio is keeping a close eye on his transfer situation. Will be a pity to lose such a work horse.

he could really do a job for us.. a real opportunity missed.

I see wolves are now advertising a sales position on their website, jay, you could have shown your potential there, son.

  17. waste of space said:

Bothroyd - you are a total and utter disgrace, we have players with half your talent at the club but they have heart and desire rather than the void that exists in your chest.

My abiding memory is not the few goals you could be arsed scoring but the ducking out ouf the way whilst supposing to be part of an effective wall against Watford on the first game of last season. Had you done your job properly we would have finished on more points that bloody Watford.

Pity the poor fools who end up paying your inflated wages

  18. deeps said:

i would also agree with jon finlan i think he could give us something different off the bench…

so we need center half, midfielder and now another striker…. i know wolves want young, hungry players etc, but i think we need to splash the cash and get some x prem guys in… when we went up we had youth AND experience…

  19. Nathan Lloyd said:

Far too lazy a player. Has the ability, just can’t be bothered to put it to good use.

Anyway Jay, good luck wherever you go. Just try a bit harder next time eh?

  20. Stephen said:

Plenty of talent! No application or effort!

  21. Wordsley Wolf said:

1 - you are talking rubbish.

When was the last time that lazy lump made an impact.

He is / was one of the most talented players at the club but he chose to waste it.

Six clubs in eight years tells its own story.

Get in your pimped up Beamer and never darken Molineux’s doors again

  22. wolvesonandon said:

I thought he would be an asset when he joined but as a forward you must score goals. Jay will never be a 20 goal a season player so I say farwell and good luck!

  23. SUPERSTARDJWOLVES said:

Apart from THAT goal against the stripey lot, you didnt do much JB. Too many selfish 30 yarders which were woeful summoned you up. But all the best anyway!

  24. Ragster said:

Don’t think he was as bad as a lot of people are saying, and as comment 1 has stated I still think he could do a job for us. Yes he is a bit lazy at times but he has the ability to come on and change a game for us.

However, I think he will move on and instead of us Wolves fans slagging him off, may be would should thank him for that goal against the Albion and wish him well for the future.

P.S. As for future purchases I think we should be looking at someone like Stern John at Southampton. He has been amongst the top scorers in this league for the past 2-3 seasons and is a solid, hardworking experienced player. Would be a good partner for Ebanks-Blake.

    Up the Wolves!

Never will be a top goal scorer. He can get some screamers but miss so dreadful chances! Yeah, thanks for the WBA goal! amazing! Def waste of talent! nevermind, make some money off him! ju

  30. James Wolf said:

    All the best Jay.

He’s got the talent but motivation seems to have been the problem. Fair play to the bloke though, he’s leaving on good terms and is keeping his dignaty and respect, McIndoe you might want to take some notes

  31. Wacky_Wanderer said:

jay just face it, your 2 lazy!

  32. Never go to Tescos said:

Simply not good enough, passionate enough and not willing enough to work hard and get on with things. A typical journey man!

It’s such a waste because this guy is more than capable of being very good at championship level. It’s just funny when you here him say ‘he’s determined to prove himself’. I’m pretty sure those were his words when he arrived at Wolves!

He just thinks he’s better than he actually is, but football always tends to find these kind players out in the end. Good Luck Jay, you’re sure going to need it!

  33. Breretonwolf said:

Unfortunately, like another striker on the transfer list, a great talent, but a tendency to laziness. Teams nowadays can’t afford to carry such players. Let’s hope they both add workrate to their abilities. I would keep either of them if they could do that.

  34. Redge999 said:

Its a shame that this guy has of yet not realised his talent, I have been following wolves for over 20 years and he is one of the most talented footballers I have seen, gota decent left peg and players with a swagger on his day! What a waste!

  35. DunblaneWolf said:

This should also put an end to the rediculous notion that Moxey is sending players out to publicly back McCarthy, if anybody was going to come out and moan about super Mick then it would be Jay.

In my opinion one of the most talented players i’ve seen at the Molineux but he’s completely wasted it so far. If he put the effort in he’d score 25+ at this level easily.

Scored some great goals for us though, the winners against Albion and Leeds will be remembered at the Molineux for a long time.

  36. dodgywolf said:

You could see the boy had talent in glimpses, but he was far to lazy in my opinion and didnt get into the box enough, dropped to deep to pick the ball up,bit like Freddie does.Still wish the lad luck where ever he ends up.

  46. shatpankwolves said:

lets be honest if his attitude matched his talents he would be at a midtable premier league club! FACT!
but they dont so see ya, another wasted english talent!

  47. rich5wolves said:

I have to agree apart from the goal against leeds and wba it didnt work for you here. I do think that with the right coaching however you could cut it in the Premier. We will have to see but on your day you were unplayable, just not enough of those days.

It’s probably not such a good idea if you are looking for a new club to criticise your current Manager.

Even Mr McIndoe waited until he arrived at Ashton Gate before he did that….watch this space for Jay’s comments !!!!

  50. The Wolf said:

Bothroyd has all the ability in the world but has no desire. Wenger saw it early on at Arsenal and he hasn’t settled anywhere since. Shame because he could be a world beater on his day. He won’t ever fulfill his potential because he is just too lazy, what a waste of immense talent. Thinks too much of himself which doesn’t help either.

    ‘Striker vows to silence critics’…

If he does ‘prove’ himself elsewhere, how would this ’silence’ his critics, unless by silence you mean ‘enrage’

The only way he will silence anyone is to carry on underachieving till everyone loses what little interest there was left in him.

    Simon :)

Rewind to the first game of last season against Watford !! that free kick. Jay B did not want to get hurt in the wall and we lost the game !!

  61. Illicit Wolf said:

He’s done a lto of bad things at the golden palace, 2bh, im not surprised he didn’t go LAST summer, especially at the Reading game, anyway, thanks for the goal against sandwell town, good luck in the future

On a plus side, if MM plays his cards right, he could swap Bothroyd and Eastwood for Ledley, quality if he can pull it off

  62. quality counts said:

I think he maybe right.Look how many Wolves players have been traded in the past that have been brilliant at other teams?

MM really has little idea as to a good solid team. As such Jay will always still be an unknown factor, as are most of the players right now.

  63. Swedewolf Bró said:

He has the talent and potential. Lazy? I don’t think so. It’s just his style of playing that gives the impression of it.

I Wish him good luck and hopes he goes to the PL. I think his style of playing suits PL more than CCC. Probably suits Spain aswell.

  64. Tripystripy said:

If you join any organisation and you do not perform you get fired, except in football. You get transferred. Its what makes the transfer system so stupid. You may a fortune for a loser and you are stuck with him. What the hell do Newcastle do with Barton? Write off 5million and move on? No they will keep a thug in there team until someone coughs up some money. If I commit a criminal offence I am fired, period. Footballers are a pampered bunch of morons, hardly a brain cell amongst them and we pay good hard earned money to watch them! World’s mad.

  65. Putza Shiftin said:

You have a long track record of setting high goals and consistently failing to achieve them Jay.

  66. tom b said:

didn’t he say the same crap begining of last season and when he signed the season before.

the one things that he will be remembered for is the goal against the baggies and that goal against leeds from 25-30 yards

lets wait and see who MM will bring in…..??

  67. blondewolf said:

    jay will u just go!!!!!

  68. The Real Bully said:

As so many of you seem to dream about that ONE goal he scored against the Albion. You must have recurring nightmares about Kevin Phillips.

  69. E11 Wolf said:

With the comments from some of you above I would hate to find out what you would say if you were not fans of wolves and really hated them…

I hope that all those with negative things to say about a very honest player are as good at their own jobs as jay is at his. In the hierarchy of soccer jay - as a Championship player - is very successful. Are all the whinges as good at what they do?

Good luck Jay. Come back to Molineux and score 3 in a 4 - 3 defeat of your team…

  70. Colley Gate Wolf said:

6 clubs, same problem at all of them…poor attitude, lack of commitment and over confidence thinking he can stroll through every game he plays. The modern day Stan Collymore with worse attitude and self importance

One of the laziest strikers Wolves have ever had and no matter what ability you have if you are moody and looking for an easy life you are not going to be successful. This guy will never do consistently well at any club and I will be delighted the day Wolves stop paying his salary.
