Keogh tipped for star future

Andy KeoghWolves striker Andy Keogh has been tipped to be an Republic of Ireland star of the future by new international boss Giovanni Trapattoni.

Keogh, who has come under fire from Molineux fans, has impressed the Italian by scoring in both games on their tour of the Algarve.

The forward netted in the 1-1 draw with Portimonese on Sunday and Monday’s 3-1 win over Lagos.

Along with Keogh, Wolves team-mates Kevin Foley and Darren Potter - who also netted against Lagos - have caught the eye. But Trapattoni has been particularly pleased with the form of Keogh.

Asked about the 22-year-old, he said: “He has time to think. He’s not an easy opponent. When the ball comes, he understands immediately what to do. That’s important, very important.”

Trapattoni added: “I already know the famous players - Damien Duff and Kevin Doyle and the older players.

“But the young players like Kevin Foley have been a beautiful surprise. He wasn’t bad. He can improve.

“What’s been very important for me this week is the players understand our mentality better.

“When they understand we can play quicker, we have more possibilities.”

Trapattoni and his players will watch tonight’s Champions League final on TV as their time on the Algarve draws to a close.

They will return to Dublin tomorrow before their friendlies with Serbia and Colombia with the manager delighted at his week’s work and the performance against Lagos.

He said: “I’m very happy with the result but also with our attitude and what the players showed us.

“I hope we can also show our fans how important this week has been when we play against teams like Serbia and Colombia.

“I’ve said to them I’m happy with their attitude. Results are important, but it’s important also they’re happy because they understand that this system will help us go forward.”

Potter sat out yesterday morning’s training session with a heel injury but he is expected to be fit for the Serbia game on Saturday when Foley hopes to win his first cap.

If he gets fitter and stronger and learns where the back of the net is he could be.
He also probably needs to learn when to speak and when not too.

Fair play to Keogh, if anyone deserves to aspire to be a sucessful international, then its Keogh and his exeptional work rate. Maybe if Boothroyd worked as hard, he’d still be playing first team football for us.

    You get what you give.

Re 1 -ridiculousely unfounded and unecessary criticism of keogh

    Erm -
First never have & never would boo our own players BUT Keogh is a striker employed to score goals & can’t. He runs around like a headless chicken & his ball control borders on hopeless. He misses the easiest of chances & generally looks out of his depth.
I would love him to turn it around next season not least because he is genuinely a nice young chap BUT lets be real here for heaven’s sake.

If keogh plays like last year & continues to picked by Mad Mick we might as well be playing with only 1 forward.

    Agree with 1, 2 & 3

Keogh is only 21 & will make mistakes, its called the learning curve. But it is clear to people who really understand their football that he has a huge amount of talent & if he continues to work hard will become a very good player.

Giovanni Trapattoni can see that, its a pity some of the Molineux faithful can’t

  32. Freddies Right Foot said:

Well done Andy ! Its good to see that you’re scoring during the close season to keep that goalscorer’s instinct about you, we (the loyal fans) know that you wont score 25 goals a season for us and lets face it, you’d be overseas or with one of the big 4 prem sides (NO, not the baggies!) if you were banging that many away a season ! Just keep up the good work, stay fit and focused and lets see you on your top form next season along side Ebanks-Blake and you never know, it could be your best season yet !

  33. savagewolf said:

A fine player with an excellent future with Wolves unless the moronic idiots who don’t understand how good he is manage to get their way…

This is a time of development for a lot of our younger players.

I think sometimes, emotions and expectation get the better of us all and we lose sight of how the team is progressing. Next season is a big test, and if we retain a fully fit squad with a few quality additions, I think promotion is achievable. Central defence is where we need bring in quality and pace, and is my only concern.

I think if we fall short next season, any criticism would be completely justified.

  40. Bournemouth Wolf said:

Keogh is a good player, no doubt - he just needs to score goals and he could be a great player. He is hard working has excellent skills on the ball, he just needs to get his positional sense more often than he does and score goals.

Definately one for the future. Let’s hope it all comes together for him next season..

  41. Arnyking said:

3 totally agree i remember when the fans wanted comitment on the pitch keogh nevers gives up, and his striking record with ebanks blake is right up there, one full season with them pair together, i predict 20+ goals a piece, i was one that wanted freddy to play, like most of you but lets be honest thats not going to happen is it so lets get behind what we have we are not that far away from being a good championship team Keogh keogh keogh

  42. lisawolves said:

well done!!! its about time people made some positive comments about him!! hes a damn good player & we’re gonna need him this season!!!
    good one andy!!!!!!

  43. Mark said:

So he was voted in the top 20 players outside the premiership and Trappatoni rates him highly. Makes you wonder why certain boo boys don’t rate him… WIth Ebanks Blake as the out and out goal scorer, Keogh will get his fair share - we need the rest of the team to chip in…

I don’t think people even need that much brain! unfortunately we just seem to have an unfair share of people who have no brains and no reason.

He worked his socks off and created a lot of our scoring opportunities last season and should be supported.

    He’s a top man

  46. Andy said:

In hindsight, our promotion prospects ended once Kights got injured.

When we went on our excellent run that took us to the play-offs in 06-07, we were genuine 4-2-4, with McIndoe and Kights doing their stuff. We still struggled against the better sides but the formation worked quite well.

Being without genuine wingers for most of this season, having sold McIndoe and Jarvis being less experienced and unfit for a large chunk, hurt us. Ward, Keogh, Bothroyd, etc. were all tried out wide when McCarthy stuck to his formation rather than playing to the team’s/players strengths.

I really think the unsuccessful stint as a winger hit Keogh’s confidence/form and certainly this had some impact on some fans’ views on him.

His form last season, like a number of Wolves players, was a dip from his first year. A large part, I believe, was due to the absence of Kightly; I’m guessing but I reckon around half of our goals that year had assists from one of those two.

Good luck for next season Andy; I hope your form improves and think it will once Kightly’s back. However, we need another wide man to help us out should we suffer injury problems again.

We also need more competition up front; SEB, Keogh and A.N.Other with the three wide men should be a fairly formidable squad to chose from. Hopefully!

It is not about the standard of team Keogh was playing against but, the talent that Trap had seen in Keogh while in training and on the pitch.
Trap knows what he is on about, you should be pleased too.

where are the “keogh knockers” today then???
i posted the quote from trappatoni yesterday in the other keogh story, and how can you disagree with the bloke and like No.9 stated its played to feet when he plays for ireland (think thats like 4 in 4 for ireland now, counting U21) and when he plays for us its try to flick the ball on with his head!!
play to feet and a lot of our players will shine like they did in MM’s 1st season in charge!!
we all know he’s not the strongest, neither is jarvis, imagine if keogh was built like elokobi???? lol
nice to see some positive posts for once!!
    long may it continue

There are some people who post on here who are obviously missing their vocation. I mean they know more than a long line of Wolves’ managers did and they obviously believe they are better suited to the task than MM is - and now they apparently know more about players’ potential than Trappatoni. Wow! I am honoured to sit amongst them.

  55. Novawolf said:

I can’t believe the negative muppets who can’t see any good in him. Sure he’s missed a chance or two…but so has SEB. When you look at the footage of, not only the goals he did score but the assists….Just view again the matches where he came from the bench and suddenly provided not only mobility and pace, but also his ability to beat his man and pull defenders out of position. This kind of ability cannot be coached and if he’s SUPPORTED and ENCOURAGED, there’s molre to come which will be of benefit to the team. Then even the muppets will be singing his name.

bosman is only allowed for 24 year olds and over.
so walsall would be entitled to a fee!!
but like your thinking with the players you named although…….
think we missed out big time when coventry signed dann and fox, fox especially looked superb when we played them at the ricoh, and although dann gave the penalty away he too looked solid!! and what did coventry pay for them £500k for the two???
and Mclean of peterborough knows kites from his grays athletic days!!
commons is good, but a bit like bothroyd if you get me, blows hot and cold!!
nyatanga is no where good enough for me, no better than elokobi or d.jones!
but the other players you mentioned sound good!
although i know ill prob get slaughtered for it, id sell murray AND hennessey, i know morgan as money etc but murray injury prone and hennessey although a great shot stopper doesnt really command his area, id sell the both for a combined what 5-7m and by joe lewis from peterborough, recently called up for the last couple of U21 games, and is quite a keeper and im sure peterboroughs most expensive signing this season!
and id also throw ashley williams into the mix, strong player for Stockport, quick defender, can read the game well and is only 23, in discussions with swansea, but he seems to be stalling (waiting for a bigger club perhaps, and im sure gleeson can have a word)

And as for young Irish types - what has happened to Potter? - he is playing well for Ireland. Am I alone in thinking he is miles better than Gibson? - Why were we wasting our time with him last season, with Potter hardly getting a look in?

That long list of managers you revere so much have failed to get us into the Premiership, and the one who succeeded was given no money and then sacked when inevitably we were relegated.

After 20+ years of failure, we fans want some success! The current crew are set to fail yet again, which is why those with some footballing savvy are bitching so much.

They are making monkeys out of us yet again, and they get away with it because the happy-clappies do as they are told!

OK, I agree this season McCarthy has played Keogh out of position–he is not a pure striker! Trappatoni knows how to use him but McCarthy doesn’t–like Gary Johnson and McCarthy with Michael McIndoe!
To me it’s obvious, though, that Keogh has bags of talent as an attacking midfielder. For sure, a star in the making! If not with McCarthy, at least with another manager!
