Striker says squad must be fitter

Andy KeoghWolves striker Andy Keogh claims the Molineux squad need to be “fitter and stronger” next season if they are to gain promotion from the Championship.

Boss Mick McCarthy has assembled one of the youngest squads in the division and Keogh said: “We know what we need to do for next season, we know what we’ve got to sort out and get better at.

“We’ll have a good rest and then make sure we come back fitter and stronger.

“We know what’s expected to get promotion and you do gain something by going through a failure in terms of not getting there.

“We know how tough and long a season it’s going to be but we’ll be ready for it.

“For us young lads we’re a season older and a season wiser and that can only help as we move forward.”

Keogh admits the players only have themselves to blame for their play-off failure – because they ‘slipped up too many times’.

The Irish forward has headed off for his summer break with a flea in his ear from fans angry at his ‘win promotion for the real fans’ comments.

But the 21-year-old accepts the players have to look at themselves.

“It was disappointing but we only have ourselves to blame because we slipped up too many times,” admitted Keogh.

“There was a time when it was in our own hands but we didn’t make the most of it.”

Wolves will watch Saturday’s £60m play-off final between Bristol City and Hull with envy after missing out on the top six by a single goal.

Despite the criticism he has faced, Keogh is convinced McCarthy is the man to take Wolves back to the Promised Land of the Premier League. “We don’t need change, we just need to develop the squad as a whole,” he said. “Continuity is crucial.”

Well i am sure the 2 goals he scored for the Republic of Ireland on tour will do him the world of good! All the doubters will be proved wrong… he is the best foil for Ebanks-Blake and unless we draft someone else in then that will continue! I am sure Mick has more pressing worries like finding two young athletic centre backs and a goal scoring central midfielder for starters.
I am sick to death of the newspaper trying to stir up bad blood between the club and its supporters with half quoted stories.

I never know what this sort of comment, ” We must come back stronger and fitter” means!

It’s said as if it’s no-one’s fault that they weren’t strong or fit enough last season but surely it was down to poor management, poor fitness coaching, bad player attitude or a combination of all 3 !

I’d love to put Mick and whichever 2 players he chose to go with him into Alan Sugar’s boardroom.

” You had one of the best squads in the league, you finished 5th last time out, you’ve a strong fan base, you bought the League’s top scorer in January, you have the best goalie in the division and you still didn’t make the top 6!….I’m having trouble with this. You failed and yet you had everything going for you. Someone must be held responsible and, believe me, one of you will be fired!”

If it was Mick, Collins and Darren Ward hopefully they’d all blame each other and all get fired!

Dont be ridiculous. He scored the other night for Ireland, Hit 11 for us (should have had more, agreed) and countless set SEB up for his goals! If thats not enough, perhaps we should sign Carlos Tevez! Be realistic, the bloke is 100% committed and in my opinion, a better footballer than Freddy (clearly all you Keogh-doubters are Freddy lovers)

Instead of jumping on this ‘let moan about every article’ bandwagon, read what he says, which actually make sense!

We all know that if any player was to say otherwise, he would be on his bike, so Keogh, give it a rest and get back to football practice, you certainly need it and by the way, the white things at the end of the pitch are called goals, this is where the ball should go when you play football, ok?

Anyway back to the serious stuff. Keogh is a decent player who puts in a shift, sets up goals but needs to up the ante 50% in front of goal. We will definitely need to sign another forward as we are releasing 3. The other one Stephen Ward is not as bad as people think. He should never have been put on the left wing but I was there when he scored a cracker at Ipswich. He is only a youngster.
The worst player is undoubtably Neill Collins!

This is a negative message about the positive messages about Andy Keogh!

Yes he works hard!, yes he creates goals!, yes he is young, yes he is an ok footballer.

I ask you all is he good enough to get us promoted! I suggest not!

Is he good enough for the prem? I suggest not!

Is he going to score 20 goals per season? i suggest not!

Is he good enough to wear the number 9? I suggest not.

Is he an average footballer in a poor division playing for a poor side? I suggest he is!

I cant help being negative guys but How can we win promotion with this guy in the side, I think we should have more ambition and attract a better player who scores goals. If he is that good why is he one of our youngsters who is never mentioned with a bigger club? Andy Keogh will not play for a bigger club in his career as wolves.

We need to get a goalscorer upfront with SEB and for me that comes from outside the club.

just some suggestions here guys, phillips, harewood, forsell, jerome, morrison palace, vaughan, everton!

I think the `negative Charlies` above have either not read the above article fully or have chosen to misinterpret what Keogh says to meet their own sad views on the ups and downs of footballing life. With more backing from the understandably frustrated but misguided section of our crowd, Keogh could become a great Wolves legend. Arthur Rowley, a great goalscorer of latter years reckoned that good goalscorers converted one in seven chances into actual goals. Does anybody have any modern day statistics as to what the current successful strike rate for top scorers in this division is? Also, what is the reaction to unfavoured players missing a chance compared to, say, Kightly or SEB? Also, why are some players used as scapegoats whilst others are allowed the occasional stinker? Lastly, how come so many of you think that such and such a player is crap when I think they are quite good and even excellent bar an off day or two? I can remember the wonderful Peter Broadbent, my hero, having some real stinkers on occasion. The judging of players is so subjective in the end who can say who is right or wrong? Out of darkness!

“But it has been a beautiful surprise, the young players like Alex Bruce - he has come and played with confidence - and also yesterday, KEVIN FOLEY, he was not bad. He can improve.

Trapattoni has been particularly pleased with the form of Wolves striker ANDY KEOGH, who scored in both games in Portugal.

i aint posted on here for a bit due to ermmm wallys, yes ill call them wallys who see keogh because he wears No.9 he should be banging in 20-30 goals a season, james beattie wears No.5 should he be a good centre half.
keogh does his work for the TEAM, yes Team not an individual but a team player, i got slated for saying these young players should consider leaving if the fans dont get off there back, and in the space of what 2months Roy Keane and Trappatoni have bigged Keogh up.

Look at the baggies and their 3 strikers, phillips who is clever and works the box and good on the floor. Bednar technically very good and strong in the air, and Miller quick and strong. All of these players have different attributes however they all score goals.

What happens if SEB gets injured what else do we have? Its a debate that will rumble on all summer!

To be fair, although I see you as slightly negative and was sure at one time you were an Albion fan lost in the ether, I know you are one of our fans who feel the hurt of the last twenty-five years hard to bear. Cheer up as good times are just around the corner. Promise!

    Wolvo, 66,
Get out quite a lot actually. Just back from two weeks in Cordoba, Seville and Granada. Get out at weekends as well, playing and managing football despite my great age. I expect you felt you had to say something but were at a loss to be polite or constructive and I appologise for having touched a nerve. Apologies for any offence felt, not intended. Out of what must be deep, deep darkness. Wont be here for any reply as I going out yet again.

76 Shatpankwolves, The vast majority of decent Wolves fans totally agree with your viewpoint. Unfotunately, the totally negative comments on sites like this are made by many frustrated fans who have no concept as to how to motivate and treat fellow human beings. You will find that many of them are obsessed with how much money players are earning and how much they, themselves are spending on attending matches and they have reason to feel upset. But hitting out at others when you feel frustrated solves nothing. We all feel the hurt but `tomorrow’s another day and life is too short to go around hurting others because you feel bad. Going out now, Wolvo or whoever you are.Out of darkness for some of us..

  97. Nippy Lobo said:

Andy Keogh is not a pure striker and should not be played at No.9. He is a very hard worker and as an attacking midfielder he has bags of talent and is a future star.
Some of you negative guys want to have your cake and eat it. If you’re going to hammer McCarthy for playing players out of position, how can you blame the players as well?! It doesn’t make sense.
Last season McCarthy used Keogh well and he looked great; this season he’s used him badly. Blame Mick, not Andy!
Trappatoni is a fine judge of players.

  98. wolfie said:

Andy Keough should be told to shut up how much more crap is going to give us
We lost out on playoffs on goal difference any one of the thirty this lightweight missed last season would have done.

MM thinks that players running around like headless chickens is good and so now does Keough off the the madhouse with the pair of you.

All they have to do is watch a STEVE BULL video EFFORT/GOALS/PASSION

take your orange boots up the yellow brick road with mm and leave us to lick the wounds you inflicted.

Keogh and the Wolves players knew last season what they had to do to get promoted, so how come someone only told them about it this week !
Fitness does help, but if you are low on skill and flair what’s the point of being fit ?
Now we know what Wolves players noses and the Prime minister all have in comon ? They are BROWN !

end day he is a “STRIKER” what are strikers meant to do? score

the midfield are meant to be the providers not keogh!!!!

71 - staunton, kerr and mccarthy managed ireland as well! maybe they are world class? if he is such a great manager what is he doing with ireland? when there was an england job going at the same time

63 - agreed everything you said! i personally love see keogh score 20 and prove me wrong about goal scorer but as we know he isnt a natural born scorer! and we need someone like harewood to get us promoted

Time to practice what you preach Keogh.

YOU are one player who needs to be STRONGER next season, and not fall over at the slightest of touches.

Put on a couple of stone of muscle and you will become a more acomplished player………..oh and practice shooting in the nets too!

Debenham Wolf–You are being influenced by the “Dark Side” suggest a good pint of “Bank’s” to calm you down beats all that sangria you have no doubt been drinking in Spain has made you shakey-Amigo

We all want the best for Wolves but you have to suffer some of the decisions our Manager has made over the last season-Some very unexplainable and often qualified in interview by “They put in a good shift” or we are all “Devistated in the changing room” _ these are not remarks you want to hear from the Red Leader they get rather boring and do not give us the fans satisfaction–I do not critise players the manager must take the flack-What these BLOGS are saying is that some of the players are just not good enough recognises the ability of a few and slates the Manager for the “Way he manages the team and tactics”–I think everyone who pays up front is entitled to some positive expectation but at this moment in time we are not getting that–Just a load of drivel from alleged quotes from players which frankly they did not make well if they did it is in some cases a insult to us has FANS– They take our money we are entitled to give them flack if they do not perform in my case I give flack to MM and Moxey.(if they deserve it)–I think-Here endeth the 4th. Lesson

Adios Amigo’s–Asta la vista–Vivo condias..I love this City– La Sieta Magnifico.(The Maginificent Seven - A great film people fighting for their SHIRTS.

103, training finished now for a month. Keogh is the type of player that should be played just behind a front 2 because he has good passing ability and a great workrate, granted his shooting needs to be worked on but you can see that he is a rough diamond that just needs polishing.

    102) we8wba what are you talking about? No refernce was made to Irish Managers being World Class? If you are able to read the comment correctly (71), you will see that I referred to Trapattoni as one of the world’s most successful managers as clearly evident from his list of honours -

    (AC Milan Coppa Italia: Runner-up: 1974–75; Juventus Serie A: 1977, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1986, Runners-up: 1980, 1983, 1992, 1994, Coppa Italia: 1979, 1983, Runners-up: 1992, European Cup: 1985, Runners-up: 1983, Cup Winners’ Cup: 1984, UEFA Cup : 1977, 1993, European Super Cup: 1984, Intercontinental Cup: 1985; Internazionale Serie A : 1988–89, UEFA Cup: 1990–91; FC Bayern Munich Bundesliga: 1996–97 Runners-up: 1997–98 German Cup: 1997–98; AC Fiorentina Coppa Italia Runners-up: 1998–99; SL Benfica SuperLiga: 2004–05 Taça de Portugal Runners-up: 2004–05; FC Red Bull Salzburg T-Mobile Bundesliga: 2006–07)

Not a bad record is it? As stated before, surely one of the world’s most successful managers should know a quality player when he sees one, as opposed to a less informed yokel.

In reference to your “if he is such a great manager what is he doing with ireland? when there was an england job going at the same time” quote. Are you suggesting that Steve McLaren, Kevin Keegan, Glen Hoddle & Grahan Taylor are great managers? If they are, the latter two didn’t show it at the Wolves, dod they? I’m sure Old Trap clearly acknowledges that he is in their shadow.

Nothing better than seeing someone make a fool of themselves publicly on this noticeboard. Keep up the good work!

Am not an MM fan with regard to tactics etc but respect him as a man. If you look at my earlier posts you might see how I disagreed with his tactics and team selection without stooping to the level of pure vitriol. With a couple of good central defenders and a combative water carrier in midfield I do believe we would have an excellent chance in what will be a more difficult division next season. I do not believe in deriding my players in public and feel that you should not post comments on here that you would not make in a calm face to face to your target. But that’s just my opinion and I’m an old softy. I prefer Adnams to Banks’ but Banks would hit the spot. Adios, amigo.

Thank you Debenham Wolf–I would agree I have never openly slated a player–I do like MM but can I say his credibility as put me in doubt that he can produce–Only future signings and desire will tell-No insult intended–I do like a good pint no matter what it is–If its kept right it tastes good–BWM
