They come from far and wide to see the top acts at Bilston’s Robin 2 club and now music fans can also rest their heads after a night out thanks to the venue’s new hotel.
Music posters advertising gigs from years gone by adorn the corridor walls and the hotel’s eight modern rooms are decorated with bright duvet covers and curtains.
Each of the sound-proofed rooms features a plasma TV screen, telephone, en-suite bathroom and tea and coffee facilities. After two years in the pipeline, visitors today got a first glimpse inside the £500,000 venue.
It is a long-held ambition for owner Mike Hamblett and it is set to become a popular haunt for artists and music fans looking to put their heads down after gigs.
Builders moved in 12 weeks ago to start work on the hotel at Mount Pleasant club and the project has seen an old building next to the club gutted, with the exterior left untouched to retain its character. Wizzard star Roy Wood, who has Woody’s bar named after him at the venue, was star guest at the opening. “This hotel is great and I am really proud that Mike has made this whole thing work,” he said.
“The Robin 2 attracts artists from all over the country to come and play and they all have a great time.
“This hotel is the next phase for the club and it really is brilliant.”
Lord Dennis Turner of Bilston cut the ribbon at today’s opening ceremony – 10 years after officially opening the music venue in Mount Pleasant with Slade star Noddy Holder. “It is a great honour to open the hotel and mark a very important milestone for Bilston,” said Lord Turner.
“The people of Bilston are as resilient as the iron and steel they worked with and their spirit has been encapsulated by Mike and Natasha who have invested, not just their money, but their time and energy to build such a wonderful hotel.”
Among the crowds at the opening ceremony was 78-year-old Eric Barker who grew up at the site during the war, before it was transformed into offices and now the hotel.
Mike is now recruiting reception staff for the hotel. Anyone interested should call 01902 401211.
