Blues in for Carsley

Lee CarsleyAlbion look to have failed in a bid to lure veteran midfielder Lee Carsley to the Hawthorns.

The Baggies had offered the Everton midfielder a deal for next season, but appear to have lost the battle for his signature to local rivals Birmingham.

Birmingham-born Carsley is expected to choose the St Andrew’s club having decided to leave Everton at the end of his contract this summer because he wanted to move nearer home. It is now understood that he had three offers from clubs including Derby, all of which will carry an appeal for the 34-year-old Republic of Ireland international.

While Albion will give him the chance to stay in the Premier League, Blues carry an obvious home appeal and Derby launched his career in 1992.

He is believed to have been offered only a one-year contract at Everton now his current deal has ended, and, of the clubs courting his services, a move to relegated Blues appeals most because he has been offered a two-year deal at St Andrew’s.

Carsley’s family have always remained in the Midlands while he has played for Everton, but he has decided to move back home permanently.

Everton boss David Moyes said: “I would like to thank Lee for his years at Everton. He has undoubtedly been a big part in our success in the last few seasons. Lee feels he now needs to be closer to his family.”

Glad he has turned down the Baggies as I think he is too old and that’s why Everton only offered him a 1 year contract.
    One door closes another opens.

With Blues being a small club who think they’re big time, this must really hurt, Every time they pip you with players. HAR HAR…

Haha, you lose all your current players and then you lose a battle to sign a player with a championship club.

Welcome home Lee. This is a great coup for Blues and just what we need. A leader and a player for the younger lads like Muamba to learn from. You don’t play 34 matches for the 5th place Premier team unless you’ve got something about you. Well done Blues. KRO.

I’m not too bothered whilst we continued be linked with quality Premier League players, you have been linked with Steve Howard. You remember? The same one that took Leicester down, good luck playing Walsall next season.

I would like to point out the E&S say “he is expected to….”

However I guess we probably only offered a one year deal and I would prefer our “overage” player on a two year deal to be KP.

Why would anyone choose Birmingham rather than the Baggies, I honestly don’t understand.

I’ve not read or heard the story that Albion were in for him anywhere else… not on SKY or in any other paper…..so where did this come from ??

I doubt very much we were in for him - but if we were and he prefers to play against swansea and Preston next season then I for one am so pleased he didn’t come.

However, I think its far more likely that someone put 2+2 together and got 7.

I generally do not agree with signing aged players but I must admit that Carsley was a great holding player for Everton and the type of player we haven’t got at the Baggies. However, it would have been short term and not something that Mowbray believes in. In Mowbray we trust.

I would be a little surprised that this one was on your shopping list.
Has a little quality but I am sure you can get someone better.

As for the negatives from some of our lot , its better than them printing crap on our site.

Good player, but if he’s happy to pick relegated blues instead of premier league albion, i’d suggest we’re better off without him. Clearly he’s looking for a comfy, final pay day.
2 and 3 need to get a life - why don’t you talk about your own club … or is it a bit too bleak and depressing?

  22. Danish Baggies said:

Linking him with wba is just a newspaper thing cos he said he wanted to live near Birmingham, and doesent mean we ever wanted to sign him. Trust me, he is not the kind of player TM is looking for. He only wants to give Phillips a 1 year deal, so it dosent make sense to give another oldie 2 years.

  23. BENNYBOY said:

2 & 3 have barnacles they are scraping so low as to try and make a Baggie bite !!!

That was the season that was not !!!! The 2006-2007 Wolves season was exactly the same as the 2007-2008 Wolves season. Went nowhere and won nothing. Manager bought high and sold low. Please Mick McCarthy don’t invite me to a drink in a brewery if you organized it !

Nose bleeds we are so high in the Premier league the Mowbray way!

  24. Cantello Rocket 78 said:

2 and 3-you spend so much time watching Albion’s news and pretending to dislike the club,it’s about time you came out-any shrink knows that you’re in denial-you really love the Baggies!Do your wulfie friends know that under your sickly dark yella shirts you’re wearing the glorious blue and white stripes?Come on,be real men and admit it.

  25. no1baggiesfan said:

To be honest, why the hell would we want him any way, he’s too old, if peace doesnt want phillips I cant have seen us signing carsley.

  26. The Real Bully said:

On Lee Carsley. It’s one of them. I’d have been happy to have signed him, he’s definitely a wholehearted professional but at his age it’s not the end of the world to miss out.

Its on the bbc website actually saying he turned down offers from Derby and West Brom as ” I didnt want a premier league struggle next season”.
Just so you dont think its a anti Albion reporter on here or anything.

  29. Baggie Boy said:

28.. I would belive the club that has said in an oficial statement that they never offered Carsley any terms..

Carsley supports blues even if albion had offered better terms than blues he would have gone to blues.

If anyone of us where multi millionaire fotballers that money was not important and 2 clubs had come in for you and 1 was the club supported which 1 would you sign for!!!.

TM will sign much better players than Carsley (no offence to carsley intended) that are younger and more eager to impress.

11…. A lot of good it did them to we won the league they where relagated do I need to do the imature ha ha ha ha thing!!!

  30. Happy_baggie said:

28 - whatever way you wrap it up - he chose to be playing against swansea and blackpool ect over man Utd, Arsenal ect… Is that really the type of “commited” ball winner you want in your midfield ??

Even if Blues do go up next season, carsley will be 36 and unlikely to get a game for them then.

He has choosen a fat pay cheque, a lower standard of football and to play for his boyhood team.

    I don’t blame him - I’m just glad we didn’t sign him.

  31. Southern Wolves said:

Your so full of crap happy.
You say your glad you didnt sign him when yesterday on the other story about albion bidding you say he would offer you something different, KP is the same age so he’s not too old and he could fit in well to the dressing room.
    Are you a politician?

  32. Happy_baggie said:

31 - yes he would offer something different and if he was committed to his football he may have been a ggod signing… but his decision to drop down a division and play against poorer teams in a poorer division proves that he wasn’t the right man for us.

However, as we never offered him a deal he may not have had much choice.

I made my comments about him on the earlier story without the benefit of hindssight - i didn’t realise he wanted an easy ride to see his career out.
