Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor is being chased by Nigeria again.
Former Everton striker and Eagles assistant coach Daniel Amokachi has been asked to persuade Agbonlahor to join the Eagles’ rebuilding process towards the 2010 World Cup.
They want Erdington-born Agbonlahor, whose dad is Nigerian, to play in a friendly against Austria in Graz later this month.
England under-21 international Agbonlahor has been included in Fabio Capello’s first three full England squads but hasn’t made the ‘cut’ so far, so can play for another country.
“We’re making a new approach for Agbonlahor,” said Amokachi. “He’ll also be part of the team for the World Cup and Nations Cup qualifiers in the summer.
“We’re talking with his contacts now and if we can
convince him to join, it will be a big plus because of the options he’ll give us up front.”
Agbonlahor was targeted by former Nigeria coach Austin Eguavoen last year. But he pledged his future to England and this latest request is likely to fall on deaf ears, especially as he has a real chance of gaining full recognition by England soon.
Meanwhile, Villa’s two released players are set to stay in the Premier League.
Patrik Berger already has one offer - thought to be from his old club Portsmouth - while promoted Stoke are also being linked.
Berger served a month’s loan at the Britannia Stadium in January 2007.
Thomas Sorensen is also set to remain in the top flight after rejecting the chance to join Ipswich.
