Legendary Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler launched his UK tour in Birmingham last night to an audience of 8,000 screaming fans.
The former journalism student treated fans to music from his lengthy career spanning his hugely successful stint with Dire Straits, co-founded with his brother David, to gems from his solo albums.
Many fans had made the journey from Knopfler’s home town in Newcastle to the NEC, with scores of others travelling from across the Midlands to be at the gig.
Treated to a standing ovation half way through the show, the audience were given an unexpected delight when he picked up the world-famous National guitar, featured on the cover of iconic album Brothers In Arms.
Another stunning red crimson guitar worth thousands of pounds was also used - and when it wasn’t, security had been told to keep their eye on it.
The set included classics Romeo and Juliet, which was recently covered by The Killers, as well as tracks from Shangri-La, Sailing to Philadelphia, Ragpickers Dreams, Kill To Get Crimson, and All the Roadrunning albums.
The multi Grammy award winner has produced records for Bob Dylan and Randy Newman.
