Wolves eye Spurs defender deal

Chris GunterWolves are eyeing a loan swoop for Spurs defender Chris Gunter.

A high-powered Molineux delegation of owner-chairman Steve Morgan, manager Mick McCarthy and coach Terry Connor watched Gunter in action for Wales against England in the under-21s international at Wrexham last night.

The trio will have seen Wolves players Wayne Hennessey and David Edwards impress for the Welsh despite a 2-0 defeat.

But Gunter is believed to be top of McCarthy’s list as he looks to re-stock his defence for next season after releasing captain Gary Breen and making Darren Ward and Rob Edwards available for transfer.

Sources say Gunter was the man being checked out as McCarthy looks to continue his ‘young and hungry’ policy for next season.

The 18-year-old Spurs defender is quick, tall and powerful but is also good on the ball.

Despite his tender years, he is mature well beyond his age and has already won three full Welsh caps – all alongside Hennessey.

Last night, he played as a central defender but he can operate anywhere across the back four.

Spurs snapped up Gunter from Cardiff for an initial £2m in January after playing just 28 League games.

The White Hart Lane club see the youngster as one for the future and they may allow him to return to the Championship on loan to gain more experience.

Gunter isn’t likely to break into the Spurs side at the moment as they have Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson to call on at the back, while they signed full-backs Alan Hutton for £10m from Rangers and Gareth Bale only recently.

“We want to get into the Premier League and the only way we’re going to do that is by keeping our best players and adding to them,” said McCarthy.

“There are so many things about the season to be positive about for next season.”

Wolves are also being linked again with Leicester striker Steve Howard.

I would say yes please to gunter and a big NO to howard if we are thinking about signing howard we should have kept kyle instead WOLVES FOREVER

  6. wolvesmod said:

i thought he was a left back myself.

    GOOD player tho.

    get him now!

  7. Loyal-Cannock-Wolf said:

    He is quality,

Nice to see that Mick realises that We need a more robust player at right back.

  8. deeps said:

like the sound of this guys, big powerful and can play the ball out of defence… just the type of player we need at wolves…. so why are they also looking at steve howard!!! how does he fit into the young hungry model? come on we should be able to get someone better than him! how about getting campbell off man u when he comes back from hull?

  9. The Wolf said:

Gunter would be a great signing,i think signing Howard for 1 million would be a good signing to help us get out of the championship. He obviously isn’t the long term answer but will do a job i reckon.Hopefully Keogh will be a squad player from now on,his finishing is hopeless.

  10. NathanWolves said:

Seems like the right sort of player we should be going for.
“quick, tall and powerful but is also good on the ball.” Get him in, loan deal for the season please Mick!
Another central defender as well as him please though!

  11. shrewswolf said:

YES for gunter, jones and howard

i know howard will get some stick but he is actually a decent striker, yes hes similar to kyle but can head, jump, hold up the ball, and shoot…

  12. Ad Mant said:

look what Stoke did with Loanees ! Seems promising.

    But Freddy for Howard…

  13. Bournemouth Wolf said:

MM - Please take note. Go to Cardiff and offer them a few quid for JOE LEDLEY. He is the business! We need more goalscorers in the team. You have only got to look at what we scored last season to realise that!! Youth policy is good, but goal policy is CRAP!

  14. optimistic wolf said:

QPR have shown their intentions by signing Ramage,a player we said was asking for too much money. If we’re serious contenders we should just BUY Gunter. The end of the day we want to see WOLVES players get us promoted not other teams players. We need to spend big or we’ll get further behind.I’d have Harry Kewell from Liverpool for a start he’s finished up there but we need to pay big wages to get these players.

  15. Gypo said:

Post 13 - We did go to Cardiff and offer them money for Ledley. £3.5m to be precise. He won’t leave Cardiff unless its for the Prem

  16. dingle said:

Bournemouth Wolf - we did already he turned us down in Jan after we had a bid of 3.5mil accepted.

  17. Redge999 said:

Good signing but not keen on howard! There are more mobile target men! I do agree that a target man is what we need to link up play though and bring the widemen in to the game more. I would rather have kyle.

  18. Gypo said:

Post 14 - Ramage is a very limited defender. The money he was asking £20k a week would be like paying Collins or Darren Ward 20k a week.
We cant buy Gunter because Spurs have just signed him and do not want to sell. If we get him on loan we may stand a chance in the future.
We have to be realistic in our approach to sign players.

  19. Bournemouth Wolf said:

14.. Only problem with Kewell is he spends more time injured than playing. We need quality FIT playing staff - preferably ones that know how to defend and SCORE GOALS!! I agree BUY GUNTER!

  20. Redge999 said:

isnt harry kewell on 60 to 70k per week, that is optomistic and that money could be spent elsewhere.

  21. Loyal-Cannock-Wolf said:

    14. Kewell would be ideal for us tbf,

He’d end up being best mates with Tony Daley.

  22. Fan_Rich said:

NO TO HOWARD!!!!!!! can stand target men!!!

  23. wolvesmod said:

i’d rather have a one legged donkey playing for us than harry kewell

  24. Matt said:

Yeah (!!) that’s the same Kewell that has made just 16 appearance in all competitions in 2 years - no thanks.
    Gunter - yes please.
    Creative midfield players needed

  25. we8wba said:

    1 - i would take that deal

i would take all three to be honest

    gunter - great prospect
howard - i would like not for 1m mind you but if we can get him for 500k he would be good purchase
jones - did wonders on loan at derby 2yrs ago

isnt gunter a right back? does this spell the end of foley?

  26. Bournemouth Wolf said:

15&16 I know we have already been turned down once, but we have to go back. Things change a lot in football - you have only got to look at Ronaldo, one minute he is staying at Manu the next he’s thinking of going to Madrid. He would be an excellent aquisition.

  27. john said:

isnt it just me, but why do we always get the most ineffective loanees at Wolves, names like cole, aliadiere, gibson, wheater, huddlestone, sping to mind.I hope this kid has more about him than window dressing. I think they cant cope with the pressure especially at molineux.

  28. Filtonwolf (Bristol) said:

What about Peter Whittingham from Cardiff ? From the few times I’ve seen him, he seems the sort of player we need in midfield i.e good on the ball, quick and can score goals.
Saw a bit of this Chris Gunter last night and he seems a decent prospect. Pity we can only think of a loan deal.

  29. Dingle Dan said:

    gunter - yes
howard - only if we can’t get anything better
    jones - definatley

i think foleys on his way.

  30. Greg Cooper said:

Gunter is traditionally a RB but can play across the back. MM has shown his intentions by letting three centre-halves go so if we do loan Gunter, it will most definitely not be the only central defender we will sign this summer. My money’s still on Berra at Hearts…

As for targetmen, Kyle Lafferty of Burnley fits the bill. Powerful, young, just what we need. Jones at Derby is another decent young player - we seem to be linked with him a lot, so there may be some substance in that one.

And in response to the point made about signing Harry Kewell, can I just say one word?: no.

  31. brummie rob wolves said:

All 3 mentioned are decent enough. If we signed Gunter I am sure it would be to play centre half not right back as someone mentioned earlier. We have 2 decent right and left backs. Howard should have been signed by us ages ago. He is now 32 but Windass is still doing it!
What would we need Harry Kewell for…? We have 3 quality wingers in Kites, Jarvis and Gobern. We also have Jones that can play there, Gray and Elliot Bennett.
Sign these 3 another centre half and forward and watch us go!

  32. Tamworth Wolf said:

As with most people like the sound of Gunter and according to the bbc website Dave Jones of Derby.

I share the views of most people with regard to Howard, it is worth pointing out, he had a good couple of seasons at Luton before Derby bought him and his goals got Derby up he scored 20+, if the intention is to play with Kightly and Jarvis he maybe OK maybe worth a go for say £500.

It would be nice to get are business done early in time for pre-season

  33. wolveswolves said:

Gunter would be a good move.

Howard - disaster, that would just signal we’re going to be booting the ball up to him.

  34. Bournemouth Wolf said:

Why are we chasing Jones from Derby - 7 goals in 47 games from midfield. That is basically a crap return. We need a player who can score 10+ a season from there. Waste of time and money! Let him go to Preston or stay at Derby.

  35. The Wolf said:

Why people are against signing Howard i’ll never know. You need certain types of players to get out of the championship,Howard is a bulldosing type of striker who can get on the end of crosses and hold the ball up well.Perfect foil for Blake and will be a great target man for Jarvis and Kightly to cross to..He isn’t the answer when we get to the prem but he’ll do a job till we get there.Better than Kyle anyway.

  36. Steve bull stand said:

Hopefully not Steve Howard. He plays a similar game to Kevin Kyle although scores a few more. But that style of player ruins the style of play we have which is more geared to playing the ball on the ground than hoofing high balls.

  37. wolves4eva said:

    35. TheWolf

I hate to say it but wba didn’t have a “howard” type forward and they got out of the championship by playing football….The game has moved on

Lets move on with it and find players who can “play football” and take teams apart. A long pass is in my opinion a good pass if it allows us to have an oportunity at goal, a long ball however, just booted up field aimlessly for the forwards and defenders to fight over doesn’t fill me with much hope, and we saw alot of that last season!!!

  38. baggiebirder said:

Steve Howard still shopping at Quicksave i see!
Going now were fast the MM way.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT HOWARD HOW CAN U JUSTIFE THAT EASTWOOD FOR HOWARD BIGGEST JOKE EVER IF WE DO THAT WE AM A LAUGHIN STOCK,HOWARD IS PASSED IT

  40. josh said:

hope we sign jones and gunter and not sure about howard need to sign 2 central defenders a.gerrard seems a good opportunity and gabbidon wolves automatic promotion next year cmon wolves =]

  41. SUPERSTARDJWOLVES said:

No to Howard. FOR GAWD’S SAKE, he didnt exactly light up the championship with leicester did he!

Why not go for someone from the lower leagues who are busting a gut for the big time, rather than a big oaf light Howard.

Gunter is a great shout! We need another expericened head though now that Breen has gone or is going…

  42. UBWolf said:

Gunter would be an excellent addition but what happened to Mr Moxeys policy of not announcing transfers until they happen. I know publicly he didn’t but to send a ‘high powered delegation’, plus something must have been linked to the press for them to get hold of it…! For me we need some experience in the midfield and I would certainly look at the likes of Howard at Barnsley or anyone from Blackpool who ran rings around us this season.

  43. Bridget & Tony said:

Howard from Barnsley - good shout - the lad from Blackpool - midfield playmaker - cant remember his name - anyone? & Stern John from Saints - holds the ball up very well and can score - Ideal partner for SEB

  44. Cornish Wolf said:

    Briget&Tony
If MM was to ask SEB who was the best midfield player he had played with/off no doubt the answer would be Halmosi at Plymouth. Fed him great passes and scored too.
YES please to Gunter, also go buy Berra.
    Up The Wolves

  45. 5th Gen Wolf said:

43..That would be Wes Hoolahan. Yes definately go for him and their CB Kaspar Gorkss who had an outstanding season for Blackpool.

  46. Big Wolf said:

Wolves need some good young players from lower leagues like we have done with jarvis and kightly : We need 4 defenders , 2 midfielders and 2 strikers !!

48- u honestly think we are going to get daniel sturridge. many better clubs would be in for him than us

I watched Howard for two seasons for Luton. He’s not pretty but is effective. If we’re playing attacking wingers he’d be ideal to get on the end of the crosses. With service he does score goals.

  52. Eddie Wolf said:

The young Welshman looks good but please not Howard. I’ve got a mate who is a Leicester fan and he says he is God awful!

  53. BeoWulf said:

Why don’t we go for Stern John? I’m sure we can prize him away from Southampton. Has been one of the top scorers in the last two seasons!

  54. blondewolf said:

howard?might aswell keep kyle!!he has done nothing for leicester!mick what are you doing????

  55. carl3333 said:

i dont see the point in loaning premiership teenagers with no experience, why not use our own players like lee collins, didnt we do this last year , giving gibson practice at our expence

Gunter sounds very good but Howard… huh do me a favour!!!

  57. Wolve4lyf !!! said:

I signed him on football manager!!!!!

  58. DudzieWolf said:

Howard is past it, Gunter is a prospect. But do we really want prospects on loan? I would rather have someone that is young but established and on a permanent deal. Jones? I don’t think so, but then again I’ve lost interest in his targets. I feel he may treat them like he did Freddy and I certainly don’t think he knows how to rotate a good squad, and that means quality players forever on the bench or in the reserves. I’ll make my comments on here as usual during close season and take next season as it comes, not expecting much from it tho. Certainly not promotion, I lost faith in him after the Norwich game last season. 2-0 against 9 men for 3/4 of the match and no use of fresh legs to drive home the advantage, the clues were there

  59. keoghs 1 man army said:

gunter looks like what we need a quick ,strong, and confident centre half fantastic. but s,howered
is not what we need to get us up.

  61. wolf72 said:

Have to agree with 53 about Stern John. I think Howard would be a decent signing, he is an option, something different dependent on what you are coming up against and if things just aint workin out there.

Has everybody forgotten the superb hatrick he scored against the Baggies. He’s a big target man but he knows where the net is too!

    Go for him I say!

  62. north bank barmy arm said:

    BILLY SHARP!!!!

  63. confused wolf said:

Gunther is quality, get him in. Danny Gabbidon would be a brilliant signing, he might fancy being the main man at a sleeping giant like wolves. Steve Howard, I didn’t know we were targeting relegation?!!!

    Deja Vu -
    Howard : last seasons rumour
    Capaldi : last seasons rumour
Gunter : loan with view to permanent then yes - without is just padding for the season with little investment

    High Powered Molyneux Delegation -
    Morgan - yes
    McCarthy - maybe
    Connor - definitely not
