Wayne happy to fight for place

wd1636663heads-30-gd-31.jpgWolves keeper Wayne Hennessey insists he will stay at Molineux next season – even if he loses his place to Matt Murray.

Hennessey is being watched by a host of clubs, with Middlesbrough the latest to join the Premier League regulars Everton in keeping a watching brief on the 21-year-old.

“If Matt is playing, I will help him and it will be the same if I’m playing,” said Hennessey.

“I’d like to think I’ll be a Wolves player by the start of next season. I hope so.

“There’s competition all the time for the shirt. I’ve just got to keep playing. Matt is a fantastic lad who I get on very well with. So it will be interesting to see what the gaffer does – whether he plays me or Matt.

“We’ll find out in pre-season.” Hennessey wants to try his luck at the top level but is happy to continue his development at Molineux at least for another season.

“I went in to see the gaffer at the end of the season and it was all positive, so we’ll see what happens next season,” he said.

“So far I’m staying and if I’ve got a Wolves shirt on, I’ll try my best for Wolves.

“It’s nice to hear clubs are coming in for me but I will keep trying my best, whoever I’m playing for. If offers do come in, it means I’m doing something well and I’d like to keep doing it – let’s hope next season I get some more offers!

“I’m confident I can continue my development at Wolves, definitely.”

And he believes he couldn’t have a better ‘teacher’ than Murray.

“Matt has been around the game – he’s played in the Premier League, which I haven’t done yet – and he’s given me a lot of confidence boosters when he talks to me,” he said.

“He gives me advice on the pitch and on the training ground and if I do something wrong, he helps me put it right. He’s good.”

Good attitude! Cant help thinking that the rumour of 6m and wolves will sell is true though!!!!!!

Nice words Wayne. Lets see what happens in the summer and whether you’re still here when the season starts.

I will be angry if you lose your place in the first team.
After a season long excellent performance there should be no doubt in your ability or profesionalism.
I know Matt Murray is an excellent keeper but must not be given the place by rights, everyone has to work, and damn hard for a starting place.
Maybe there is the problem from last season to many given a start without giving the performance on the pitch and in training week in week out.
Get a grip MM, there is no right of passage just good honest toil.

I think Hennesey is a great prospect - but he is still a PROSPECT !!

It would be foolish for a premier league side to buy him as 1st choice yet - he still has a lot to prove.

He has only had one season as a pro and so I think he should (and will) stay with you for next year… but if you don’t do it this time he will be off.

    Kightly on the other hand……

I hope that Wayne does keep his place I dont see why he shouldnt!!! Reference to Murray Im sorry but we seem to be going round in circles with him which is a shame as he cant help it, Come On The Wolves.

  6. Dan said:

Thats mouthwatering - Hennessey and Murray fighting over the shirt. Competition is great, they can only both become better keepers from this

  7. morganonthefrontfoot said:

Hennessey is our number one goal keeper; it’s up to Matt to try to re-claim the shirt! I fear Matt’s injury record will prevent him from ever fulfilling his potential.

  8. HerefordWolf said:

hennessey and murray now at least we will be able to brag that we have the best two keepers in the league next season , lets just hope the rest of them can play to their potential and add some quality in defence and midfield soon

out of darkness cometh light !!

Will stop, it’s not the Albion you know.

Im sorry but Matt desvers the number 1 classic.. hang in their Wayne your will be the future number 1

  11. Glorybox said:

If Murray could sort his kicking out, i still feel he is the better keeper because his command of the area is far superior

“Matt has been around the game – he’s played in the Premier League”

    ??????

  13. Mayday Bank Holiday said:

I also believe Murray is a slighlty better keeper, better command and presence around the box, but he will always be liable to injury, with his huge torso being supported by match stick legs

Thanks Wayne for a good season –Some great saves wish I had the camera near–Have a good Summer we might see you next season I hope–

The voice has spoken, “All hail Happy Baggie!”

Haha, Albion are promoted and still theres more focus on us, Pride of Black Country, who can blame E&S.

  16. wolfmadgaz said:

is it me or has matt murray never played a premiership game????

murray is number 1 in my eyes if fit!!

  17. Matt said:

Keep up the good work Wayne - you are our No.1 and deserve to be. Matt Murray needs to start knocking on the door.
Will be interesting to see which keeper will develop and improve the quickest:
Wayne with commanding his area although playing with a settled and quality back four would help.
Matt to get sustained fitness and improve his kicking.
    Let the battle commence

Murray is definately the better keeper absoloutly no doubt in my mind. If we can keep him fit (IF and that is a big IF)we are in a unique position of having 2 fit Premier League quality goalkeepers.

Hennesey is a class act, however I would cash in on him for the £6m that is being quoted and bring in 2 to 3 players for the money. Maybe A Johnson in a poss player plus cash deal with boro’.

  20. Eddie Wolf said:

Personally, I would probably cut my losses with Murray. It breaks to me to say it however, he is quality. But his injuries will always restrict him from being the best he could be!

  21. Cheslyn Hay Wolf said:

Happy - I’ll think you’ll find he’s been a pro longer than year mate.

Don’t kid us by saying he aint ready for the prem. He’d walk into your team - no problems at all. Kiely would be cleaning his boots.!

  22. Eddie Wolf said:

…if only Hennessey had the same commanding qualities. That is what lets him down. But that is clutching at very thin straws. Both class!

  23. BENNYBOY said:

Baggies fan who would like to see Henessey get more acknowledgement for his great commitment and work last season. I hope I just helped towards it ?
Yes it is good to have competition for places, but it may cause problems ? With MM anything is possible.

  24. Wolfster45 said:

MM will probably sell them both and put Elliot in nets
    Taxi for McCarthy

  25. Arnyking said:

Murray played just the 1st game at blackburn

  26. Happy_baggie said:

18 - “walk into our team”…. don’t think so pal.

As I say, he is a great prospect - but if we are going to Old trafford I would rather have Deano with his experience. WH makes some silly errors at present. he can come as back up though.

Also, by pro I mean 1st team - I understand he had a contract before this.

15 - i see the pills are wearing off…. take another quick.

  27. E11 Wolf said:

Goalkeepers reach their peak in their mid-late twenties. hennessey will be playing for a major premiership club for sure by then. he is a very good shot stopper but it’s his positioning where he really excels as a young player.

We cannot rely on Murray to last a season. has he actually completed a full season ever? Even as a youth he was plagued by problems.

A lot of people rate Ikeme so maybe he will emmerge, take over No 1 when hennessay moves on.

We are lucky to have Hennessey and I hope he doeas well.

  28. Matty Wolf said:

It’s good to see Wayne has not at all become arrogant by the increase in interest for him, he’s on a steady slope upwards that will without doubt take him to the top, Well done Wayne, keep up the good work!!!

  29. Big Wolf said:

Wolves need some good young players from lower leagues like we have done with jarvis and kightly : We need 4 defenders , 2 midfielders and 2 strikers !!

    C.BERRA Hearts 24 1.5m
    A.GERRARD Walsall 22 £750k - 1.0m
    D.BECKWITH Hereford 24 FREE
    C.GUNTER Tottenham 18 LOAN IN

    K.COMMONS Not For 24 FREE
    D.BELL Luton (On Loan Leicester) 24 £750k - 1.0m

    A.MCLEAN Peterbrough 24 1.0m
    S.VOKES Bornemouth 18 1.5m

AND MOXEY DONT BE TIGHT (LIKE THERE WAGES AND THE COST) JUST GET THESE PLAYERS IN AND WOLVES NEXT SEASON WOULD BE PREMIERSHIP !! COME ON MICK GET THESE IN !! UP THE WOLVES !!!

  30. wolves4eva said:

Hennessey will gain the commanding of his box with experience, He still has the odd bad game but hey don’t all keepers, David James in particular.

He will turn out to be a fine pro for whoever he plays for, If it is with Wolves great lets see who MM brings in in front of him to protect him defensiveley??

  31. Matty Wolf said:

Matt did play in the Premiership if only for the first game of the season against Blackburn

  32. JonnyB said:

Matt played the 1st Prem game away against Blackburn, the only game he played that season, but we lost 5-0

This could all end in tears.

  36. DudzieWolf said:

Not what he said last season, he wanted to be playing all the time. Still, I would rather have him in goal than Murray now and knowing that Murray is on the bench may make him play even better. Lets see what defenders he gets in, he saved goals and the the last lots’ faces last season. With some decent defenders he may break his own record again. We need a creative midfielder and someone who can shoot from a free kick, last seasons lot were to frightened to have a go. The one we did have was stuck on the bench for most of the season, then when he did get the chance nothing came from them. Down to lack of practice and opportunities I’d say

  37. spooks said:

offload both for £10m, play ikeme or stack and buy 3 quality outfield players

  38. Darth Taputh said:

Probably a good idea to ship Murray out on loan for a couple of months - see if he can string 8+ games in a row.

  39. wolves4life said:

my hat goes off to bobby mimms, great gk coach who has brought through some real quality inrecent years

  40. Manchester Wolf said:

There is NO doubt Murray is a far better keeper. Is it coincidence that we under achieved this year, the Hoddle era and DJ’s final year without murray, and then gain promotion and hugeley over achieve in the two full seasons he has played?

Murray is often the starter of attacks, last year how many times did he come to the penalty spot to claim a corner, and release the ball immediateley to kights (newton under DJ) or mcindoe (kennedy under DJ) leaving it 3 on 2 in our favour going forward.

Hennessey is simply a prospect for now and doesn’t have the presence, reliability, and confidence of Matty, giving the reassurance to the defence and also the fans.
Under Matty, the fans are not nervous when we concede a corner, but with wayne (or previously oakesy and tht joke P.jones) we are.

The only thing moxey from cashing in on wayne is the injury proneness of Matty.

Wayne will always be number 2 to Matty. Also, what about the forgotten man… carl Ikeme, nigerias number 2 keeper (when fit)

WH makes some errors at present you say! Where did you get that info from?

I bet the majority of your fans (if they were honest) would have WH over DK anyday.

DK has received a fair bit of criticism from the baggie fans in the season just gone.

  42. YoungWolf said:

just so you know. he played one match in the PL. we lost 5-1

What planet is Happy baggie on. Amazes me how much of his time he devotes to commenting on Wolves.
He wouldnt care if Albion finished 2nd bottom in League 2 as long as wolves were bottom.
A few years ago when Wolves were the best team in the black country did anyone honestly care about Albion.
I can honestly say I never thought about them once.
Still being above the mighty Wolverhampton Wanderers is an amazing feat for a club like West Brom I suppose.
If west brom are worse than Derby next year he wont change his name from happy cos at least they are above Wolves and thats all they dream of.

  44. south bank barmy arm said:

nice one wayne so we have got wales no.1 and future england no.1 we are going up say we are going up

  45. southbank barmy army said:

WOULDN’T BE MUCH OF A FIGHT THO’ WAYNE.. YOU’D ONLY HAVE TO BLOW ON MURRAY AND HE’D OUT INJURED ALL SEASON..HAHAHAHAHA.

  46. Veinsofgold said:

    definateley need to strenghen.

2 defenders Gunter possibly and McCarthy from Charlton.

1 Ball winning attack minded midfielder with good goalscoring potential.

2 strikers If the price is right Phillips is a must 100%. Also a younger pacy lad.

  47. Happy_baggie said:

43 - “a few years ago” when wolves were the best team… err try 15 years ago..

Also don’t you understand that I enjoy mocking you and your bizzare superioity complex.

Considering the huge gulf between our clubs in terms of style, results, prospects - we are even a division higher (again) I would have thought you would have been gratfeful for a bit of attention…

Considering the amount of anti ablion rubbish I’ve seen you post this season I can’t believe you have the brass neck to moan about me - then again its par for the course with muppets like you.

Notts 41 - I will be the first to say WH is a great prospect - but I have seen him let the ball go through him on a couple of occassions this season - but he will only get better.

DK has more experience and has proven himself to be quality - but I admit he has probably reached his peak… but I would still play him next season.

  48. lidiwolves said:

you play very well and if you keep it up you will go very far xxx

  49. JJ - The Original said:

come the end of the season one or both will be gone … and god help us with ikeme.

Murray is the better keeper in my opinion -
    IF HE COULD KICK

But Mick wont play matt unless wayne falls-apart or gets injured …. as he has been instrumental in micks survival.

  50. Southern Wolves said:

    47. Happy, you have a short memory. Pre Gary Megson you were crap.
You talk about about a hugh gulf between the clubs when in reality its the TEAM that is better.
We have a great youth acedemy you dont.
We have a rich owner with ambition you dont.
We have a fan base that could fill a bigger stadiumwhen established in the premier league you dont.
We have a glorious history you dont.
We have players that want to stay even though we didnt get promoted. You didnt.
Other than premier league status(which granted is important but comes and goes) where is this huge gulf??

  51. ste wolves said:

and just to think if ikeme was fit. he is better than murry and hennessy. his all round game is there. kicking, saves, comanding, you name it he has it

  52. Happy_baggie said:

50 - yes pre megson we were poor - but so were you.. The point you made was about when wolves were better than Albion - and IMO that aint happened in at least 15 years…. our failure doesn’t make you a success.

As for other points - I won’t bother with the boring history / fan base rubbish… you don’t sell out now so your argument is irrelevent.

Your acadamy has done well, but we have just sold a 16 year old for upto a million pounds, and have 2 more in the England U16s.

As for your owner - hmmmm…

Yes he is loaded, but he does seem reluctant so far to spend - Freddie was your big signing last year at 1.5M.. not exactley pushing the boat out.

But the real story takes place on the pitch - and if you want to pretend that all the points you raise make you a better club then i hope you enjoy next season - cos you certainly didn’t enjoy this one. I on the other hand look forward to watching my team competeing with the worlds best.
