Mick McCarthy has cranked up the promotion heat for next season by insisting Wolves have the best players in the Championship.
McCarthy remains under fire from fans frustrated at the failure to reach the play-offs this season.
Their task next season will made harder by Reading, Birmingham and Derby armed with multi-millions of parachute payments to get straight back up, while QPR are now bankrolled by three of Britain’s richest men.
But the Wolves boss is convinced his young guns are the best around at Championship level.
“I think we’ve got players here who are as good as anyone in their positions,” said McCarthy. “Wayne Hennessey came from nowhere through the academy and has done wonderfully well and Matt Murray will be back.
“Kevin Foley and George Elokobi have done great since they have come in, as have Kights and Matt Jarvis. George has been remarkable – if there’s a better left-back in this League from January then he’s just been promoted with Albion.
“And I’d have loved to have seen Michael Kightly and Matt Jarvis on either wing for a full season.
“Dave Edwards came in from Luton and did really well, so has Karl Henry, Stephen Ward and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake. People such as Dave and Karl are the nucleus of our side and that will remain. Sylvan and Andy Keogh are still very young, but Sylvan finished top scorer. Those players are as close to being as good as anything in their respective positions in the League.
“Realistically, we’ve got a fantastic squad of young players.
“I’m excited about our prospects rather than dwelling on missing out. What’s the point? We’re not involved so we’ll look forward and be positive about it. We’ll get new players in as well.”
McCarthy remains confident of keeping his squad together – and adding to it.
“They’re all young players, but would all those individuals have gone into Premier League teams without coming here first? Probably not.
“They have all come here and contributed to what was a near miss.
“But having had that 12 months together, they will all be better for it.”

Guys, I played at molineux in a charity match last night and before the game i was chatting with andy thompson, david kelly and mostly with tony daley, stephen ward daley said is a very highly rated striker and unfortunately hes had to play out of position but they are expecting him to make an impact this season, he said that mick and the coaching staff, jez and morgan sat down they will bankroll the transfers mc carthy wants to taker us up automatically and already said we will strwengthen in january. great blokes the 3 legends, very down to earth and molineux is a great stadium. hey express and star i was interviewed by you last night whens the article going in the paper it was the charity football aid.

I understand this ‘young and hungry’ mentality, but it still has to be mixed with experience. Look how Sheff Utd improved with Gary Speed. Not saying we should buy him or any old over 30’s player that can’t cut it in the PL, as we have had far too many semi-retired, overpaid footballers.
Two quality centre halves with pass a must - one young and one more experienced.

It is very nice to hear that you are so positive.
But I sem to remember a similar story last season with the promise of TOP 2 FINISH, playoffs were not mentioned and then the comments “judge me at the end of the season.”
I 100% want wolves to get promotion next season in the top 2 places without the lottery of the play offs.
Mick is raising the stakes by rating our players higher than any others in the championship, I think Blues, Reading, Derby under Jewell and QPR + others will have something to say about that.
The same words were uttered by MM last season with Freddy being the last pices of the jigsaw, Elliot being “different class”, Darren Ward as “the quality centre half” we needed - These players are now all transfer listed after less than 1 full season - Does quality dissappear that quickly?
Anyway MM - I will support Wolves long after you have gone, whoever is in charge, Whatever division Wolves are in and always give Wolves 100% support untill the day I die.

1. We have a crap manager who cant bring the best out of the players.
2. We have a crap manager who dont understand tactics.

Why are we buying a striker from a relegated team ( Graham Howard, Leicester ) every wolves fan knows that when Freddie was played at least he gave 100% How can you justify picking Elliot & Kyle in the squad when Freddie was available last season. Next Season is not going to be a walk in the park by any stretch of the imagination, If Leeds get promoted via the Play Offs there will be 17 teams out of the 24 in this leauge that have at some point played in the Premier League. We need to spend well on experienced players, although we have some good young players we need older experienced heads around them. Otherwise we will be cannon fodder……..

Wolves Fans - remember there is always one team that excels and overcomes the critics/doubters and over the Season does better than the big money clubs, I for one expected Cahrlton to get promotion since on paper that appeared to have class and an experienced Championship manager. Unfortunately in this League you need a little bit more than class, you need a strong work ethic and this is where the likes of Stoke, Bristol and Hull have excelled against the better footballing teams. I’m sure if you can get that blend right then next Season could get you promotion, remember you don’t have to play us for 6 points which could make the difference between success or disappointment. From the outside MM does talk a good case but your season will depend on who and what you get during the summer transfer window.

We do have some good players, we also have some not so good. Team selection for 2007/8 did not seem to distinguish between the 2 groups. Hence much of the frustration - BUT that surely is the managers job !

Incidently Stephen Ward is currently captaining the Ireland under 21’s in what is actually an under 23 tournament in Malaysia. Ireland won the first game 3-1 and Ward scored the third.

Well Morgan has decided Mick is the man to start us off next season and personally I agree with him.
Even if I did not, where is all his sniping going to get us? Who cares, back the Manager, back the team and if it all starts crumbling then fair enough, but let’s not start off from a negative starting point.
No-one forces you to come to the games, so if you don’t like it, vote with your feet and don’t bother turning up. You wouldn;t go and watch a film at the cinema if you thought it was a load of rubbish would you?

We should remember that this is Steve Morgan’s first full season in charge, I seem to remember that the take-over was only finalised in the first week of the new season. I think that he will have seen how close we were to the play-offs, playing average football with a mixed ability side. I’m looking forward to next season more than any since Graham Taylor took over (yes, I know we crashed and burned then too, but we should have stuck with him!!). I know that Mr Morgan talks about a ten year plan but I believe that this is the season of reckoning, the one when all of the rhetoric needs to be turned into action and results. Reading between the lines I think Olifinjana is off, but I think we will be a better team for it. He’s been great but a little too inconsistent. After all these years we are due a truly great season in this damned division, it would be ironic if that season was the one when the fans were at their most hostile to the board & manager.

In my opinion you have under achieved this season, as well as the squad in general.
It’s only right that you stick by your guns and your beliefs.
I think that to help the situation and unrest amongst the fans, that you MM should hold a forum in the stadium with questions that have been forward to you, which will give you time to answer them, and if you feel like it have a short on the spot question session from the fans.
I would love to be there myself and hope that you invite me along.
I would be quite happy to pay an entrance fee, with proceeds donated to a charity of Wolves choice.

If it were down to me he would have been shown the door and a new manager given the squad and cash to build what he thinks he needs to do well, not regret it after 10 games next season.

If they are so good, why were there so many losses, and draws during the Season, and why wasn’t Wolves promoted to the premiership. Wolves may have good players, but they certainly don’t work well on a Saturday/Sunday when playing matches they are paid well to win.

If Mick thinks he’s got the best players in the Championship then there’s only one person to blame for failing to finish top, OK with injuries you could excuse not making auto-promotion, but missing the play-offs as well ! As a Baggies fan can I just say the longer MM stays at Wolves the better, the longer he remains deluded about the quality of the squad the longer before things get any better. MM must stay !

If MM really said this then it’s a bit naive. In my view your squad is much stronger now than it was this time last season. What you can’t do is stand still, it needs strengthening even more. Next season will see the 3 relegated teams plus moneybags QPR, although expectations of foreign owners may see them off.Clubs like Sheff U, Charlton and Watford will be looking to have better seasons along with the usual surprise packages. As no doubt there will be many changes in everyones personnel before then, perhaps now isn’t the best time to decide who will have the best players.

the top people at the club come out with these claims, saying we have the best players in the league and then use the ‘Wolves factor’ and too high expectations as an excuse! We are being told we have the best players in the league yet finished 7th? This is ridiculous!!

I have to agree with MM on this one. We have an excellent group of young players. We are only really lacking two decent centre backs.
If we can keep Kites and Jarvis fit all season we will prove to be a completely different proposition and will score a lot more goals.
Elokobi is proving to be a real find. Yes he started slowly and some of his passing is sloppy but he will prove to be a very good player.
I still can’t believe the stick Karl Henry gets. He is the best defensive midfielder in the Championship. He is as good as Reo Coker and how much did Villa pay for him? Get Mark Davies in the centre and we’ll do well next season.

Mick McCarthy is the person who has kept us in this promotion race for next season, after hoddle went we had no team and Mick had to build this team up from scratch. You think these players are not good enough even though they managed to finish 7th in the championship and still be only be 22 years old??

erm, did any relegated team do much this season…no. so the threat from those coming down isnt so great. we have one fear, and thats ourselves. all talk and no action. and we more than any club know that money can’t buy your way out of this league. Only Blackburn did it a long time ago.

Get him out, this guy has completely lost the plot. To come out and say that Dave Edwards and Karl Henry are the nucleus of our time is insulting to the fans. Jack Hayward sold the club in the faith that money would be spent but now all we get is our penny pinching manager trying to con the fans with budget and incompetent signings.
Look what he’s done, any manager who releases three players who he signed and only played one season should be sacked, he’s wasted Morgan’s money, he’s wasted our time and if this carries on he’ll waste any chance of Wolves being able to get back to the Premiership before its too late…he did well first season but he’s got to go

Mick, I’m a supported of yours, but coming back with “what was a near miss”. WHy bother with that. Our main rivals went up as champions, you comment is a bit like “never mind lads Albion got the Jackpot, we at least still got three numbers and we can buy 10 tickets with that next week”.
Sorry Mick, the team were just not good enough, yes there is some talent and I for one think that you will make if happen, without messing about with the playoffs next time.

68. Brighton Wolf, I don’t know Stephen Ward and I’ve never met him. I’m a just a fan as you are but unlike you I prefer to look long-term and see some of players as work-in-progress. What I don’t like to see, in any situation, is victimisation. Ward, to some, is being used as this scape-goat for our latest campaign. But let’s look at the facts, he mainly played left wing to cover for our injured first choice Matt Jarvis, he’s usually a striker, he’s playing in his first full season in Britain, he’s still relatively young, he worked hard and never gave up despite being asked to fill an unfamiliar role. With all these things taken into consideration I think he can walk away with his head held high unlike some of his team mates. To describe him as “one of the worst players to wear a wolves shirt” is an absolute nonsense comment and I think you know that. I think it’s a blessing in disguise that we didn’t get ptomoted this year. One more season in this division for our young lads will help them mature into a better outfit. You’ve only got to look at WBA to see the benefit of experience in a side. There could be a great season ahead of us.
