Children at a secondary school are enjoying a real-life biology lesson – thanks to a bunch of cute ducklings.
The ducklings appeared this week at St Edmund’s Catholic School, in Compton Road West, Wolverhampton, after a mother duck set up home next to the school pond during the Easter holidays.
Now her 10 fluffy balls of yellow and black down are the centre of attention given the pond’s focal point, surrounded on all sides by classrooms and windowed corridors.
School receptionist Rachel Chamberlain said the drake had visited periodically over the past couple of months but has vanished from the scene since the chicks were born.
“The babies have caused great excitement among the pupils,” she said.
“One of our classrooms is being refurbished and we were worried the chicks might be disturbed by the noise of the workmen, but they’ve not been bothered.
“We’ve not fed them as there’s plenty to eat in the pond but we’re keeping our eye on them. Apparently the mother will fly off as soon as the ducklings can fend for themselves. The ducklings are expected to stay for 60 days before flying off.”
