£40m boost for town revamp

wd2796515regeneration-west.jpgPlans for West Bromwich town centre got a £40 million boost after funding was approved by regional development agency Advantage West Midlands.

It is hoped this will help generate more than £300 million in private investment. The funding, applied for by RegenCo, the urban regeneration firm for West Bromwich, will kick-start regeneration plans for the area.

One of the first schemes to take shape is the new Sandwell College, with work to start over the coming months.

Planning permission was recently secured for the £80 million building, replacing current outdated facilities in Smethwick, Oldbury and West Bromwich, and work is set to start in the summer.

Located in the heart of West Bromwich, adjacent to the Metro station and bus station, the college will be one of the largest Further Education Colleges in the West Midlands with over 10,000 students.

Karen Walker, chief executive of RegenCo, said: “The modern facilities will enable future generations to thrive, and contribute to the economic growth of the town.  Investment in education will positively impact the area and kick-start its transformation.”

The redevelopment of the town’s retail sector is also well under way.

More than £350 million of investment has been secured over the next five years for two town centre schemes that will create almost a million square feet of new and refurbished shop floor space.

A bid for outline planning permission for All Saints, a 300,000sq ft Grade A office development is due to be submitted by Stoford Developments in the next few months.
