£20k raised as Wolves fans pitch in

Wolves fans travelled hundreds of miles and raised thousands of pounds for charity in return for a kick-about at Molineux.

Ex-players Tony Daley, Steve Froggatt, Andy Thompson, David Kelly and Jon Purdie acted as coaches and joined the amateurs on the pitch. Last night’s event, hosted by Scottish charity Football Aid, saw fans raise £20,000 in sponsorship money to bid for a place in two teams for a match at Molineux.

The charity hosts similar events around the country with some fans raising thousands each for the right to play in numerous matches at big venues. A total of 28 fans, nearly all of whom travelled a long way, were able to fulfil childhood dreams by playing in Wolves strips at the home ground.

The estate agent lettings manager said: “It’s thanks to my colleagues, family and friends that I am here. I got £170 in sponsorship. It’s always been a fantasy of mine to get on the pitch.I had no idea how close the stands are. At least I know the West Brom players heard everything we were shouting at them.” Outdoor activities organiser Kris Archer, 21, travelled 185 miles from Carlisle.

“I lived in Newport in Shropshire until last year so I’ve been a season ticket holder,” he said.

“It’s brilliant to be back and it’s a real privilege to be here.”

Wolves fitness coach Tony Daley, who was a winger for Wolves in the 90s, said: “It’s not often I get to play any more so I’ve really enjoyed it. Everyone’s given it their best shot but the most important thing was that they had a good time.” The money will be split between Football Aid’s chosen charity Juvenile Diabetes and local projects to be nominated by Wolves.
