Dean Kiely today admitted he was unaware the Championship had handed out a Golden Glove award to him.
Hot on the heels of his recall to international duty with the Republic of Ireland, the Baggies keeper pipped Wolves rival Wayne Hennessey to the award after accumulating 18 clean sheets.
“I’ve got to be honest and admit I didn’t know there was a Golden Glove award!” said Kiely.
“I’m fiercely proud of my clean sheets record and ratio right the way through my career. But all season, the focus was on us getting promoted, not on how many clean sheets I kept. Saying that, I’m thrilled to have won it, it’s up there with when Charlton went up into the Premier League as champions and I broke the club record for clean sheets with 19. I kept 18 this year and that again equates to about one in three which is my career record, so it’s been business as usual in that respect.”
At the age of 37 and with a fresh challenge ahead with both Ireland and Albion, Kiely shows no sign of letting up.
He added: “I identified what the job would be here, it was about being dependable, consistent, not the kind of keeper that will let the ball through his legs or his hands or let a daft one in. It was about not costing the team and I think that has again helped my game. I’ve played in a promoted team, kept a lot of clean sheets, played nearly every game, and I can look back at that over the summer with a lot of job satisfaction.”

As a Wolves fan this is the only thing im bitter about, is somebody having a laugh! You know albion fans i am very complementary about your style of play and that you are fully derserving of your place as champions but Deano dodgy keeper has struggled this year and if he had been part of any other side he would not have the record he has with you guys. If you had Hennesey in goal, he would have won you another 10-15 points, he is part of the reason you didnt win the league as convincing as you should have.
Undeserved
The Henn kept more clean sheets - probably Micks fault he didn’t get it…or Moxleys
Hold on a second. Is the Golden Glove the keepers version of the Golden Boot?
If so Kiely was not the best keeper in the league. 18 clean sheets was beaten by Wayne Hennessy, he got 19 (all in the league) and conceded less.
No sour grapes or anything here but this is like awarding Beattie the golden boot award instead of Ebanks-Blake.
Maybe if you had kept the most clean sheets in the league you’d have expected to win it. CHEAT!!!!
now lets stop saying its undeserved and the wba fans who will prob come on and comment to win us up
ITS CREDIT TO BOTH OUR TEAMS THAT BOTH OUR GOALIES WERE UP FOR THE GLOVES! END OF
1… you cant have it both ways mate !! all season wolves fans where ridiculing our defence and yet, now deano has won an award our defence was great and he did not deserve it.
What next west brom got the most points yet because we where expected to go up we dont deserve that!!
4: SB Not so Genuis
How is he a cheat????
Was he on the panel himself???
I’ve gotta admit, I was one of the supporters who did want to see Danek get a shot in goal, Deano is (was) without doubt the best shot stopper in the Championship, occasionally he carried an erratic head and his decision making was questionable, but his talent in shot stopping is unquestionable.
Would Hennessey of gained us an extra 10-15 points….Who know’s???
Good job we did’nt need them
i make it hennessey kept 19 clean sheets:
stoke A, Norwich H, Leic A, Cov H, Charlton H, South A, Barnsley H, WBA A, Colc H, Preston H, QPR A, Sheff U H, Scunt H, Blackpool A, Palace A,
Colchester A, Bristol C A, Cardiff H, Plymouth H.
and the only one in question is Palace away where he went off with about 10-15mins left so that still makes it 18 in the league!!!
Just like to say this guy will be a weaklink in the prem, like Jones was for us. Both of a similar age and both not as good as they were 5 years ago. Get a quality keeper, centre half and a couple of others and the baggie boys will be fine.
this is unbeliveable hennassy has kept a totyal of 19 count them 19 clean sheats and as i have reasearched the award goes to the player with the most clean sheats. but the reason he didnt get thte award was get this because two of those clean sheats he was substatuted off injured. i mean are they having a laff or something keily is a shocking keeper and how tony can say hes the best shotstopper in the championchip is beyond me .
all that mattwers though is that we know who the real deserved winner is ! super wayne.
I’m sure the FA probably counted up the clean sheets for all keepers in the league before handing out this award.
They think deano kept more clean sheets than Rodney - so i believe them - I can’t be bothered to count them all.
However maybe the FA, like the rest of football, just don’t like you ??
1 - how can you keep calling him dodgy when he was promoted with the best team as the best keeper in the league.
He says he won’t let any daft ones through his hands - can your wonder boy say the same thing - now he HAS let some dodgy ones go through him.
p.s - the only reason E likes blokes won the golden boot was cos he played 8/9 more games than KP - but we’ll let you keep it !
and the reason hes unaware of his award is because he hasnt won the award !!
haha dingles, winning the golden gloves the kiely way in style of course of yes
6) are you thick, the side that you follow does have a suspect middle 2, the full backs are both good, you play keep ball and I bet you have 60% of the play in most games which i am trying to say means you keep the ball better and he has less to do. The wolves defence is pretty poor and the goalkeeper has to do alot of work. He has kept more clean sheets in a poor side! He kicks better. If wou were at the 2 fixtures between the 2 sides this year you will have seen the gulf between the 2 sides was kept to a remarkable one goal in 180 minutes mainly due to Hennesey.
He is one of the few players we have who would get in your team. so stop being an idiot.
He was also unaware of how to deal with crosses for most of the season!!!!
Still he won. Super Kev should also have got the golden boot as he scored 1 less than SEB but in about 15 fewer matches those Cheating Dingles again eh
10 - Thats like saying a player who plays just one game and scores is the best player cos he scored in every game he played….
If you use two keepers in a game then one didn’t keep a clean sheet did he…. its not rocket science.
However even if you count the two games he went off in, he only kept one more clean sheet than Keily -yet your guy is the “best keeper in the world” and ours is dodgy - with a dodgy defence - you can’t have it both ways.
If Rodney is injury prone like bambi then maybe you should just find some stronger / fitter players.
anyway - well done deano - TOP KEEPER !!!!!
Happy can you have a sensible debate?
I’m sure if Hennessey had kept more clean sheets etc he would have won the award, i’m sure the officials of that award have more idea about judging goalkeeping performances than any of us on here, but i am happy to accept. These awards just keep on coming, fantastic.
It appears the green-eyed Dingles are still in full-swing!
der dopey dingles, you cant count clean sheets if your goalie goes off and another comes on and still keeps a clean sheet,it means youve used two keepers to get the clean sheet, sorry but it goes to deano and you lose again..you should be used to it by now you never win anything,,LOSEEEEERS..ALWAYS BEATING THE DINGLES THE MOWBRAY WAY,,IN STYLE OF COURSE,,,OOOOOOH YES.
You wolves fans are so thick, Graham Stack got two clean sheets in the two league games he played, hence Henneysey got 17 clean sheets, and Stack got 2 (I believe the keeper who ends the match gets the clean sheet)Kiely on the other hand got 18 clean sheets and is a deserved winner of the award.
Ok for all the sensible fans out there,
Should Keily be number 1 in the prem?
Hennessey got 19 clean sheets.. played in all our games this season went off injured in two a couple of minutes from the end, Stack only played a full 90 in the Carling Cup.
I also like how the E&S haven’t printed my previous comments with a URL where it shows Hennessey got 19 clean sheets - Wolverhampton newspaper, whatever!!
If Kiely was so good why didn’t he get into the PFA team of the year, and why isn’t he in the top 5 goalkeepers on the Actim Index Stats?
Case closed. I think the people who manage these Football ranking systems know more about goalkeepers than you, the Football League messed up with this one.
Palace away - Hennessey played 75 mins………so yeah Stack gets that clean sheet!!my arse
HAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAA golden boot for seb
and we have at to come along and take the gloves with the rest of the trophys weve won
Can I ask again what’s happening with Danek anybody know ?
It’s real funny reading the above whatever you say Deano got the award.End of
But I have to admit Hennessey is a good keeper I wonder if you can keep him ?
fair enough thought hennessey only went off in one match.
ahwell can cheer myself up knowing that Super Kev didnt get the golden boot…… who won that again????
I still prefer a goalie , in the Russell Hoult mould, who commands his area by coming out for crosses. The goalkeeper should have the best chance of dealing with a cross in my opinion. !18 clean sheets or not, set pieces were still our Achilles heel which I think highlights the point I’m trying to make. RIP John Osbourne, another goalie not afraid to come of his line
Re: Redge999
As a baggie, I agree with your comments.
Can’t really say that I’m that bothered either way about these minor awards myself.
The bottom line, Wolves fans, is that we had a successful season, and are happy souls at the moment.
Of course next season is going to be difficult/impossible, but what are we supposed to do? Deliberately not get promoted because the next level is too hard?
DanWBA,
lets not be too harsh here, some of the wolves fans on here carry the mental fortitude of a lettuce but on the other hand they have some sensible chaps and ladies who come on here to discuss football in an adult manner. Plus I do agree Hennesey is a great goalie in the making, no offence meant but he does either need to move on or wolves need to taste some prem football. big well done to Kiely though….and yes thats K-I-E-L-Y Happy….god it feels good to correct you!
BOING BOING
14.. No need to get personal old pal if you cant have a debate without the the childish name calling I would not bother mate!
You must be kidding hennesesy walk into our team he is so over rated its untrue . He is just a kid who will get better but he is nowhere near it yet. Murry over hennesesy any day.
in post 17 you ask happy to have a sensible debate have you tried it yourself without the childish stuff.
who cares how many clean sheets he kept we got promoted and thats all that counts!!!!!!!
Never mind all this let’s have a real debate. I was genuinly surprised to discover that this was your first title for 88 years so I checked and it is correct, nothing since 1920. Then I thought how many titles have we won over that period. Have a guess…………………….. Well the answer is 8 (eight). We can not deny that you were better this season but I think this proves we have been more successful throughout our entire lifetime.
East Enders won the best soap, when we all know it’s Coronation St. Awards like this mean very little. Players count titles and trophies they’e won at the end of their careers not awards.
6. i don’t think he was complementing your defence i think his point was because you played attacking football it took the pressure off your defence did you actually watch your own team play this season.
thick or what.
This debate over clean sheets is daft. The fact is if you play the style of play that the Albion play, you are going to let in goals, but frankly, regardless of how many goals we let in, our defence was still good enough to win 23 games, and finish top of the league and get promoted. Dean Kiely has been a top keeper and is STILL top pro.
ALL FACT. You wolves fans can attack us as much as you like it won’t change a thing!!
They did actually give the award first to Hennessey but he dropped it !!! BOING BOING !
I don’t want to turn into Basil Brush so I will stop the jokes and BOING BOING.
Is it because we had more clean sheets in the cup as well ? As we got futher than yow ?
Yes murray may be injury prone, but he is a better keeper than hennesey and kiely by a long way. I doubt even albion fans could disagree with that, though somebody probably will
wayne kept more clean sheets conceeded fewer goals and was the pfa championship team of the season, not bad for a young lad in his 1st season and he will be 2nd choice when murray is back. deano kept the 2nd most clean sheets so i spose as wayne won the real award only fair, plus albion need something to show in their trophy cabinet as theres very little i=n there!
38 Laughing Wolf.
Not sure of um actual statistics but it true your esteemed ancestors won many trophies, took many scalps. In living memory of tribes, WBA nation count many, many coups while you make soup out of your own moccasins to stay alive. Still you seem happy living in past. Heap good luck with it.
I can’t for the life of me understand this overeaction from Wolves fans.
I think it’s common knowledge that Hennessey is a far, far better goalkeeper than Kiely at the moment. However, the stats don’t lie. Kiely has kept more clean sheets because he’s never gone off injured. Ok it’s a technicality, but that’s life.
Wolves fans, at the end of the day if all you’re bothered about is Hennessey getting this award, then it just goes to show how poor your season has been.
I can understand that you’re all probably feeling a little bitter towards us, what with all the awards we’re getting (we even got recognised in the House of Commons yesterday!!) but please, accept that Kiely won the award and move on. We all know deep down who the better keeper is, and unfortunately he plays for you lot.
6) Your defence was not great. MM has been slated and rightly so about loaning Craddock. Just as bad was Mowbray with Clement. I think you would have struggled for the top 2 without having him back. He might not be your best passer but he is your best defender!
All 3 of our goalies are better than Kiely!
Good grief, is this going to be the standard of ‘debate’ until the start of next season?. Its going to be a long summer!
38.. There is a championship league winners trophy thats in their, that was won way back in early May!!
What have Wolves won say in the last 5 years or so
apart from being voted the worst supporters !
we have won the play offs? i saw the trophy at molineux when i played there last night in a charity match. Anybody think gera might sign for us hes looking a bigger club, maybe as backup to kites?
@32,
wolves with 8 trophies?
div 4 winners is a bit of an embarrasment though surely? ;o)
@44,
gera looking to wolves as a bigger club?
ROFLMAO, why would he want to to step down
a division/class?
besides, MM wouldn’t sign him as Gera’s far
too technical and wouldn’t fit in well with
the hoof it / lump it techniques as seen at
the custard bowl.
stfusd, no it was great, watched Bully score 50 goals two seasons running, very happy memories.
@47 Malvern,
what you would do for that goal scoring prowess now eh?
maybe SEB could manage half that total in a full season?
