Curtain up on theatre’s past

wd2790393grand-1-gd-13.jpgThe Grand Theatre has been at the heart of Wolverhampton for more than a century and its famous boards have been graced by some of the biggest names in showbusiness.

It may not have been Wolverhampton’s first theatre but it has outlived its rivals and continues to bring in thousands of fans each week.

Bosses are now giving people the chance to delve into the history of the prestigious venue.

Theatre-lovers are being urged to go along to share their own memories of the site, which opened in a blaze of glory in December 1894 to transform a rotting eyesore building next to the Victoria Hotel in Lichfield Street.

It cost an estimated £10,000 to build and took less than six months to complete.

The theatre will be hosting “memory afternoons” at 2pm on May 27 and May 28 giving people the chance to bring some of past alive.

As part of the event, people will be given a talk about the history of the theatre and will be led on a guided tour to get a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes.

Louise Bent, education officer at the theatre, said: “Hundreds of thousands of people have enjoyed shows at the Grand Theatre over the years and everyone has their own personal memories.”

Places for the events must be booked in advance. To book please call the Box Office on 01902 42 92 12.
